A Letter From the CEO:
The Why
When I was 14, I was suicidal. I had grown up in an extremely unstable environment. I was raised by a strong, immigrant single mother who struggled to provide for her kids in an unknown country. As a result, we found ourselves living in every form of housing: homeless shelters, cars, friends’ homes, etc. Not only were we without a home, but we often found ourselves relying on food and clothing drives for our basic needs. It was a lifestyle I had grown accustomed to until my 8th-grade year when it seemed like we finally had a breakthrough. A generous man offered to allow us to stay with him until he found new housing and would give his home over to us. Those were the best 3-6 months of my life, as it was our first time living in a real house. One day, after church, we came home and found that all the locks to the house had been changed. We later learned that the landlord had evicted us, and all of our belongings had been bagged up and given away. All we had to our name was the car and the bag of white clothes from laundry day that we hadn’t brought inside. My mother was frantic about finding us somewhere to go, and we found Mary’s Place, a shelter for women and children in Minneapolis. We were back where we started, but there was something about this time that was terrifying. It was like life was taunting us with the reality that we were never going to amount to anything. While in Mary’s Place, my world turned bleak. I remember thinking the worst possible things about myself, but those thoughts felt more like damning facts. I was poor, dirty, dumb, homeless, fatherless, and incapable of advancing in life. The thoughts grew ominous and loud until I decided the only way out was to kill myself. It was settled in my heart, and I didn’t tell anyone about my plans. Like an angel had prompted her, my mother decided that same week that she was going to force us to go to a church retreat for youth in D.C. That was the worst 16-hour trip of my life, but it was one that saved me. One night of the retreat, the dance team did an interpretative dance to a song by Kirk Franklin named “My World Needs You ”. In the dance, there was a young boy who struggled with suicidal thoughts and was about to commit his final act when an angel prompted him to stop on account of his praying mom. Of course, the dance was touching, but the music. The music spoke directly to my soul. Every note felt like a hug; only it penetrated deeper than any hug had. It was the first time I had heard a Christian song like that and the first time in a long time that I saw light. Life didn’t become magically perfect after that, but I didn’t need it to be. I found something special that made enduring the darkness worth it.
I am often told to keep the story “short and concise” because listeners will be practical and want to get to the point. I believe that any sensible person would know that no company can survive without a “why,” and my “why” has been woven into every experience of my life, preparing me for a time like this, so I could not ‘keep it short.’ If I could go back and talk to my 14-year-old self, I would tell her not to fear the darkness. I would tell her to laugh in the face of every beast of life. I would tell her not to roll the eyes of her heart when someone would say, “it’ll get better”, because it would. It would get better. Not because the darkness would cease but because she would soon find an everlasting light that would shine on her in every valley of death and every moment of misery. I would tell her to stop wishing for the darkness to end and instead start looking for ways to invite the light. After all, darkness is simply the absence of light; in the end, the darkness will not prevail. Unfortunately, I cannot go back in time and speak to my 14-year-old self, but that is okay because plenty of kids her age need to hear that message right now.
Creating this platform, and spreading this word, is an attempt to not only get the message to those who need it most but also give them a tool to strengthen their mental health and relationship with God.
