Bone conduction is a form of hearing where sound waves are transmitted through your bones directly to your cochlea — the organ in your ear responsible for interpreting sound. This bypasses the eardrum and allows you to hear ambient sounds while listening to music without disturbing others.

In fact, bone conduction was famously used by Ludwig Van Beethoven when he was almost deaf. He used a metal rod to transmit sounds from the piano to his jaw so he can “hear” his compositions despite his compromised eardrums.

The idea for SND-RAY was born a few years ago. Our founder Jack Adrian was backpacking throughout the Mountain states. Towards the end of his trip in the Colorado mountains, he asked a man for directions. The man couldn’t hear Jack at first. He was wearing big chunky sunglasses and headphones underneath. Jack then jokingly said “wouldn’t it be great if your sunglasses were also headphones?”

Jack began to really look into this after his trip. He wasn’t satisfied with the products on the market: the sound quality was lackluster, the design poor, and the materials off. Nobody had done it the way it should be done.

Years later, Jack has built SND-RAY Labs Inc into a fully fledged company with experts from various fields with decades of experience. We want to change the way people experience audio. We all have two things in common — we love audio and love to have fun.

At the time, Jack couldn’t anticipate that his friendly encounter would become the idea behind a fully-fledged company. Jack has not met the man from Colorado again.
