5 students on a mission to enable youth in Japan to “FIND THEIR DRIVE†through inspiring workshops.

Story

日本語ã®èª¬æ˜Žã¯è‹±èªžã«ç¶šãã¾ã™ã€‚

Hi! We are Ahhyun, Kokoro, Len, Hinah, and Tomo, a team of five Sophia University students. We conduct self-empowerment and leadership workshops for youth across Japan.

Why we started RISE:

Most people care about what they leave TO the next generation. At RISE, we care about what we leave WITHIN them!

We want to inspire and help youth build the self-confidence they need to explore their purpose, pursue their passion and envision their own dream of enacting social change in their communities.

That’s why we will set out around Japan this summer to engage with young students through carefully designed self-empowerment and leadership workshops.

How we will create impact:

We will be travelling across Japan for six weeks starting from August 2021 to deliver our workshops. In preparation, over the past year we have built up our skills by hosting workshops for our fellow students. For this roadtrip we have already confirmed over 10 youth communities and scheduled more than 15 workshops in 10 prefectures.

We have partnered up with Girl Possible, an experienced US-based NPO that teaches leadership skills to young girls in the US. They have not only inspired us to do the same for young students in Japan, but have also provided us with invaluable advice on delivering our own workshops.

We are excited to expand our impact to a national level and engage with the hundreds of middle school and high school students awaiting us!! Please make a donation to help us reach them!

OUR MISSION

RISE was created by students for students. Our mission is to enable youth to become changemakers by building their creative confidence and lighting the path into the realm of unknown possibilities.

Why are we doing this? & Why does this matter?

Today we are living through fast changing and challenging times that can feel overwhelming. But this is also a time of opportunities and we want the youth to see that. RISE is a dedication to our younger selves, and those moments when we didn’t know what our future would hold for us.

All of us had role models that encouraged us at different stages to follow our own passions and strive to create impact in the communities we live in. Now, we want to do the same for the youth in Japan.

We deeply resonated with Girl Possible’s framing of this workshop. Just like them, we believe that asking young students what they want to do in the future is not the best approach. Instead we need to ask them, “What kind of change do you want to create in the world, and how can you begin to achieve that dream today?”

We also believe the design thinking mindset, method and tools have the power to enable social change. We have had the opportunity to be immersed in design thinking during our training at the Hasso Plattner Institute and the Stanford University Innovation Fellows programs and we have felt empowered by it. In the past year we have also created and conducted several design thinking workshops in our communities.

Design thinking is a creative process for approaching any problem. It starts with getting to know the user and moves through steps for defining the “user need” and challenge, brainstorming solutions, building prototype, and trying them out!

THE WORKSHOP

Adapted from our partners at Girl Possible, the two-hour-long “Find Your Drive” workshops each cater to 15-20 students from middle school or high school between the ages 13-18. Using the design thinking mindset, the workshop enables youth to uncover their unique leadership styles, discuss the issues that matter most to them, and reframe them as opportunities to make a change – all while laughing, playing, and bonding.

Why do we need your support & What are you funding?

Basic funding goal – JPY 850,000
We are providing our workshops free of cost. However, to reach all those who need our workshop we need your support. By backing our campaign, you’ll help cover all of our transportation costs, supply costs for running the workshops and the expenses of being on the road for 6 weeks! Thanks to our generous donors, corporate sponsorships and, most importantly, our partner Girl Possible, we have already secured most of our accommodation and workshop toolkit costs.

Stretch funding goal – JPY 1,200,000
Travelling around Japan is not only costly but also comes with a significant environmental impact. Our entire team strongly believes in the value we are providing with our workshops, but we also want to ensure that our carbon footprint will be as minimal as possible. Therefore, with our first stretch goal, instead of flying or driving, we would allocate the additional funds for us to use lower carbon emitting transportation methods such as the Japanese bullet trains to travel long distances.

What we will do if we go beyond our target amount
Now if we go beyond our basic funding goal and our stretch goal targets, we will allocate all additional funds to meet and/or enhance other project goals and team needs. This includes developing the toolkit for our audience in Japan, onboarding new team members and continuing to provide our workshop toolkits to youth communities free of cost.

What you get in return for your contribution

This project is deeply personal, emotional and meaningful to us. By supporting one student’s  dream and creating impact through our work, you too become a part of our journey. We believe this is not just about ourselves, or the youth we reach directly, the schools, or even yourself, our generous donor. This is bigger than all of us! It is about bringing positivity and hope for the future to young people in Japan and inspiring the next generation of changemakers.

During our trip we will provide regular updates on the progress through our Instagram posts as well as on the Video Blog we will set up specifically for this purpose. We will also provide a final report at the end of our project.

Risks

We are aware of the risks associated with organizing this roadtrip in the midst of the pandemic. In this sense we are taking all the precautionary measures. All team members will strictly follow COVID-19 precautionary measures prior to conducting all workshops: the submission of COVID-19 self-test kit’s result every two weeks, temperature measurement report, mask, and frequent sanitization. We are also equipped to deliver all workshops in the virtual format. We have confirmed the support of our local partners in all the prefectures in emergency situations.
