SYNOPSIS

A 99 year old Quechua-speaking woman recounts her memories around the family that abandoned her after the Peruvian terrorist group Shining Path took over their town, forcing her to sell her dreams as stories to make a living until reunited with them, as promised, to celebrate her 100th birthday only after telling her 100th tale.

SINOPSIS

Una mujer quechuahablante de 99 años relata sus recuerdos alrededor de la familia que la abandonó cuando el grupo terrorista Sendero Luminoso tomó control de su pueblo, forzándola a vender sus sueños como historias para ganarse la vida hasta reunirse con ellos, como prometido, para celebrar su cumpleaños número 100 solo después de haber contado su centésimo su cuento.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Narrated in Quechua—Peru’s most spoken language after Spanish—and set in the town of the same name, PUQUIO is a black and white short film that portrays the struggles of a mother who holds onto her son’s memory and lives to fulfill a promise made to him; a goal that will push her to use her gift of communicating with spirits through her dreams in order to meet again.

Yet this is no tender story. Inspired by my grandmother’s out-of-body experiences and by one of the women that raised me—who witnessed the loss of her family to terrorism—this is a tale of injustice and indifference that highlights the values of hope and resilience during conflict through the characters’ election of what is worth living for.

DESCRIPCIÓN DEL PROYECTO

Narrado en quechua —la lengua más hablada en Perú después del español— y ambientado en el pueblo del mismo nombre, PUQUIO retrata la lealtad y sacrificio de una mujer mayor por su hijo que, afectada por su ausencia, usa el don de comunicarse con espíritus a través de sus sueños para cumplir su parte de la promesa que se hicieron y así su hijo retorne a ella.

Inspirada en las experiencias extracorporales de mi abuela materna y por la historia de una de las mujeres que me crió, quien perdió a su familia durante la época del terrorismo, este cortometraje en blanco y negro procura destacar la esperanza y resiliencia en el marco de un país golpeado por el Conflicto Armado Interno.

IMPORTANCE

In any war scenario, it’s the population caught in the middle which suffers the most and even with the world watching it’s not unusual for most to disconnect from what only the directly affected experience. It takes more than just being informed; one must truly place themselves in their shoes. For this reason, and using film as a vehicle, it’s during these times of increased socio-political awareness that I feel compelled to depict my country’s raw history and culture with the intention to honor family, loyalty and identity in a dream-like metaphor of life and death.

IMPORTANCIA

En cualquier situación de guerra, son aquellos en medio del conflicto quienes sufren las peores atrocidades. No basta con estar informados; uno debe realmente ponerse en sus zapatos. Por esta razón, y empleando el cine como vehículo, es durante estos tiempos de creciente conciencia sociopolítica que me siento comprometida a representar sin estilismos la historia de mi país con la intención de honrar nuestra identidad e historia.
