EL FABULOSO ARTE HUICHOL / THE FABULOUS HUICHOL ART

El pueblo Wixarika o más conocido como huichol, es uno de los pueblos indígenas de México que habita la Sierra Madre Occidental, la cual comprende territorios de los estados de Nayarit, Jalisco, Durango y Zacatecas. Es uno de los pueblos que ha conservado sus costumbres y tradiciones, así como su cosmovisión a través del tiempo, los cuales se relacionan íntimamente con los elementos: tierra, agua, fuego y viento.  Los wixaritari (plural) han desarrollado diferentes expresiones artísticas: música, danza, canto, poesía y pintura, así como diferentes técnicas como el tejido, bordado y la pintura con estambre y chaquira (pequeñas cuentas de cristal), las cuales les han dado a conocer a nivel nacional e internacional a través de su colorido y el simbolismo ancestral de piezas de arte decoradas con las figuras de jaguar, serpiente, águila bicéfala, venado cola blanca, peyote (planta sagrada) y otras que se pueden traducir en elementos simbólicos que antecedieron la escritura.  

The Wixarika people or better known as Huichol, is one of the indigenous groups of Mexico that inhabits the Sierra Madre Occidental, which includes territories of the states of Nayarit, Jalisco, Durango and Zacatecas. It is one of the native peoples that has preserved its customs and traditions as well as its worldview over time which are closely related to the elements of nature: earth, water, fire and wind. The wixaritari (plural) have developed different artistic expressions: music, dance, singing, poetry and painting as well as different techniques such as weaving, embroidery and painting with yarn and chaquira (little crystal beads) which have let them be recognized nationally and internationally through their colorful and ancestral symbolism of artwork decorated with the figures of jaguar, snake, double-headed eagle, white-tailed deer, peyote (sacred plant) and others that can be translated into symbolic elements that preceded  writing . 

 EL PROYECTO ANIÉRIKA /THE ANIERIKA PROJECT 

Aniérika es la palabra Wixarika (huichol) que da nombre al proyecto, que se asemeja a la fonética de “América” y quiere decir ‘’Tu rostro’’. 

Aniérika is the word in Wixarika (huichol) language naming the proyect, it sounds similar to the phonetics of América and means “Your face”. 

El proyecto Aniérika consiste en la creación de un gran mural con la técnica de arte huichol de chaquira donde se plasmarán símbolos ancestrales de la cosmovisión de los pueblos originarios de América.  

 The Aniérika project consists in the creation of a great huichol art mural with the “chaquira” technique (painting with little crystal beads) where ancestral symbols of the worldview of the native peoples of America will be embodied. 

El mural estará segmentado en tres fases o murales menores que abordarán cada región de nuestro continente americano: América del Norte, Centroamérica y el Caribe, y Suramérica. Cada fase o mural menor de Aniérika tendrá 12.2 metros de largo por 2.44 metros de alto que equivalen a un área de 29.77 metros cuadrados. Por consiguiente, el gran mural tendrá un total de 89.31 metros cuadrados, cuyo montaje será flexible, en uno, dos o tres muros de forma horizontal para su exhibición, con el fin de que puedan ser apreciados a detalle.   

The mural will be segmented into three phases or smaller murals that will be about each region of our American continent: North America, Central America and the Caribbean, and South America. Each phase or smaller mural of Aniérika will have dimensions of 12.2 meters long and 2.44 meters high, equivalent to an area of 29.77 square meters. Therefore, the large mural will have a total of 89.31 square meters, whose assembly will be flexible on one, two or three walls horizontally for display so it can be appreciated in detail. 

El período de creación del proyecto Aniérika será de 36 meses. Cada fase o mural menor tendrá un período de creación máxima de 12 meses, iniciando en febrero de 2020 y finalizando en febrero de 2022.

The creation period of the Aniérika project is 36 months. Each phase or minor mural will have a maximum creation period of 12 months, beginning in February 2020 and ending in February 2022.

 En contraste con los muros que separan, el mural Aniérika se propone exponer el rostro de nuestra América a través de símbolos ancestrales que narran nuestro origen y tejen lo común, la riqueza cultural y espiritual de los pueblos que originalmente habitaron este territorio mágico.

In contrast to the walls that separate, the Aniérika mural intends to expose the face of our America through ancestral symbols that narrate our origin and weave the common, the cultural and spiritual wealth of the people that originally inhabited this magical territory.

Esta campaña de financiamiento colectivo es para financiar la primera fase que corresponde a los símbolos de los  pueblos originarios de Norteamérica: Canadá, Estados Unidos y México. Una vez finalizada esta etapa, el mural resultante será entregado al pueblo mexicano para que pase a formar parte de su acervo cultural y artístico. Nuestra intención es que su sede sea el Complejo Cultural Los Pinos en la ciudad de México y desde allí tenga una agenda itinerante.

This crowdfunding campaign is for funding the first phase corresponding to the symbols of the native peoples of North America: Canada, the United States and Mexico. Once this stage is finished, the resulting mural will be delivered to the Mexican people in order to become part of their cultural and artistic heritage. Our intention is that the mural´s headquarters be the Los Pinos Cultural Complex in Mexico City and from there have an itinerant agenda. 

EL ARTISTA / THE ARTIST

 Puwari, Álvaro Ortiz López, es un artista comunitario del pueblo Wixarika (huichol), originario de la Sierra Madre Occidental de México.

 Puwari, Álvaro Ortiz López, is a community artist from the Wixarika (Huichol) people, he was born in the Sierra Madre Occidental of Mexico. 

Ha realizado más de 80 exhibiciones colectivas e individuales en diferentes Estados de la república mexicana, de los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica, así como en países europeos como Francia, Alemania, Bélgica, Holanda, Finlandia, España, Suecia, entre otros. Ha obtenido diferentes premios y distinciones a nivel estatal, nacional e internacional y ha sido becario del gobierno del Estado de Nayarit en disciplinas como artes plásticas, literatura en lenguas indígenas y música. Ha tenido la oportunidad de participar en la creación de obras como el “Vochol”, un vehículo Volkswagen sedán decorado con chaquira con motivo de la conmemoración del Bicentenario de la Independencia de México y Centenario de la Revolución Mexicana (2010),  el “Pianol”, un piano de cola completa decorado con chaquira (2011), máscaras de la saga de Star Wars, entre otras. En 2019 realizó un mural de obra colectiva en el Festival ElDorado de Lille, Francia. 

He has made more than 80 collective and individual exhibitions in different states of the Mexican Republic, the United States of America, as well as in European countries such as France, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Finland, Spain, Sweden, among others. He has obtained different awards and distinctions at national and international level and has been a fellow of the government of the State of Nayarit in disciplines such as plastic arts, literature in indigenous languages and music. He had the opportunity to participate in the creation of artworks such as the “Vochol”, a Volkswagen sedan vehicle decorated with chaquira for the Bicentennial of Mexican Independence  and Centenary of the Mexican Revolution (2010), the “Pianol” , a complete grand piano decorated with chaquira (2011), masks of the Star Wars saga among others. In 2019 he made a collective work mural at the ElDorado Festival in Lille, France.

Su destacada trayectoria artística a nivel internacional le hizo merecedor de la Medalla al Mérito Artístico otorgada por el gobierno del estado de Nayarit en el marco del Festival Cultural Amado Nervo 2018.

His outstanding international artistic career made him the winner of the Medal of Artistic Merit awarded by the government of Nayarit during Amado Nervo Cultural Festival 2018.

Participar en la creación del “Vochol” me abrió el camino para la realización de otras obras de gran formato como El Pianol, murales para empresas privadas y mural de obra colectiva como el de Lille, Francia en 2019. Mi anhelo como artista Wixarika hoy es utilizar las técnicas desarrolladas por nuestros ancestros para compartir elementos de la cosmovisión de los pueblos hermanos de América y de esta forma contribuir a la unidad y convivencia sana que el arte y la cultura pueden generar. 

Participating in the creation of “Vochol” opened the opportunity for the creation of other large-scale artworks such as El Pianol, murals for private companies and collective international creation such as mural in Lille, France in 2019. My desire as a Wixarika artist today is using the techniques developed by our ancestors to share elements of the worldview of the peoples of America and thus contribute to the unity, brotherhood and healthy coexistence that art and culture can generate.

Aniérika es una propuesta original de un artista comunitario Wixárika, sin intermediarios, y tanto el mural como las recompensas serán creados directamente por artistas huicholes del colectivo Usos y Costumbres de Artistas Indígenas por México (UCAIM).

Aniérika is anoriginal proposal by a Wixarika community artist without intermediaries, and both the mural and the rewards will be created directly by huichol artists, members of the Usos y Costumbres de Artistas Indígenas por México (UCAIM) collective.

POR QUÉ NECESITAMOS TU APOYO / WHY WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT

Quienes nos dedicamos a la creación artística, tocamos puertas y buscamos aliados para realizar nuestros proyectos, es la manera como concretamos los objetivos que nos proponemos. El financiamiento es casi siempre el principal reto de la creación artística, especialmente cuando se trata de un arte como el arte huichol, el cual requiere de muchas chaquiras, ojos, manos, tiempo, investigación, y talento heredado de nuestros ancestros y ancestras.  Es por eso que decidimos hacer esta campaña de financiamiento colectivo, para involucrar a toda persona que se identifique con el proyecto y con el gran sueño de ver realizada una obra de esta magnitud por artistas Wixaritari. De triplicar la meta inicial, tendremos de inmediato los recursos necesarios para trabajar sin parar hasta finalizar el mural completo e involucrar a  -por lo menos-15 artistas para la creación de la obra y a varias decenas de artistas que crearán las recompensas.

Those of us who are dedicated to artistic creation, knock on doors and look for allies to carry out our projects, is the way we achieve the goals we set . Funding is almost always the main challenge of artistic creation, especially for a project like Aniérika which requires many chaquiras (little crystal beads), eyes, hands, time, research, and talent inherited from our ancestors. That is why we decided to make this crowdfunding campaign in order to involve any person who identifies with the project and with the big dream of seeing an artwork of this magnitude created by Wixaritari artists. If the initial goal is tripled, we will immediately have the resources necessary to work non-stop until the end of the complete mural and involve at least 15 artists for the creation and several dozen artists who will create the rewards.

•  La meta inicial es de 1,234,600 MX$ (65,300 US$ aproximadamente) con la que se cubrirán los costos de todos los insumos necesarios para la realización de la primera fase del mural dedicado a los pueblos originarios de Norteamérica. Es decir, una tercera parte del mural (29.77 metros cuadrados) incluirá los costos de la campaña y recompensas, investigación, materiales, diseño e idea original, ejecución artística, proceso de socialización y movilización de materiales y equipo a diferentes lugares de ejecución. 
•  La primera meta ampliada será de 2,469,200 MX$  (130,600 US$ aproximadamente) para realizar dos terceras partes de mural (59.54 metros cuadrádos), las que corresponde a Norteamérica y Centroamérica y el Caribe.
•  La tercera meta ampliada será de 3,703,800 $ Mx ( 196,000 US$ aproximadamente) para realizar las tres fases que completan el mural Aniérika (Tu Rostro), que corresponde a los 89.31 metros cuadrados.

•  The initial goal is  $1,234,600 MX (approximately $65,300 USD), which will cover the costs of all the necessary supplies for the creation of the first phase of the mural dedicated to the native people of North America. That is, a third part of the mural (29.77 square meters) and includes the costs of the campaign and rewards, research, materials, design and original idea, artistic execution, socialization process and mobilization of materials and team to different places of execution. 
•  The first stretch goal will be $2,469,200 MX (approximately $130,600 USD) to create two thirds of the mural (59.54 square meters), which corresponds to North América and Central America and the Caribbean. 
•  The third stretch goal will be $3,703,800 MX (approximately $196,000 USD) to complete the three phases or the Aniérika mural (“Your Face”), which corresponds to total 89.31 square meters. 

A la vez invitamos a centros culturales, museos, espacios artísticos emblematicos de Canadá, Estados Unidos y México para ser sedes temporales de la ejecución del proyecto Aniérika. 

 At the same time we invite cultural centers, museums, emblematic artistic places of Canada, the United States and Mexico to be temporary venues for the execution of the Aniérika project.

 SOBRE KIERI, EL PERSONAJE DEL VIDEO / ABOUT KIERI, THE CHARACTER OF THE VIDEO 

Hace algunos años me pidieron hacer de un casco una obra de arte huichol. Yo acepté el reto y subí una fotografía del resultado final en mi página de Facebook y -para mi sorpresa- la foto se compartió muchas veces, generando un impacto que derivó en miles de mensajes en mis redes. Más tarde un amigo conocedor de la historia me contó que podría existir una relación entre el arte Wixarika (huichol) y personajes como el Darth Vader de la Guerra de las Galaxias saga que, por cierto, nunca he visto. Ahora decidimos darle vida al personaje de Kieri y pedirle que nos ayude a compartir el mensaje para poder hacer realidad este proyecto. La historia de Kieri la estaré compartiendo a media campaña, no se la pierdan.

Some years ago I was asked to make a helmet a Huichol work of art. I accepted the challenge and uploaded a photograph of the final result on my fan page and – for my surprise – the photo was shared many times, generating an impact that resulted in thousands of messages on my networks. Later, a friend who knew the story told me there could be a relationship between Wixarika (Huichol) art and characters like the Darth Vader of Star Wars, saga that by the way, I’ve never seen before. Now we decided bringing to life the character of Kieri and ask him to help us share the message in order to make this project a reality. I will be sharing Kieri’s story at the middle of the crowdfunding campaign, don’t miss it.
