The Story

Haunted by memories of Desert Storm, Philip returns home, searching for purpose amidst personal health battles. Determined to set a strong example for his son, Philip Jr., he immerses himself into bodybuilding. This quest leads him to lose almost 150 pounds in 1 year all while battling alcoholism and addiction.

The arena challenges him both physically and mentally, but the allure of the coveted Black Sword prize ignites his spirit. Supported by his steadfast partner, Kim, who reminds him of his past trials and the legacy he wishes to create, Philip’s journey is more than just a competition. As he takes the stage, it becomes a profound testament to resilience, proving that no challenge is too great when one’s spirit remains unbroken. Based on a true story.

The Team

Director – Josh Menning

With the success of his first short film he continued on and wrote, produced, and directed his first feature film called Unwavering. Unwavering won numerous awards at the Christian Film Festival in 2017 and is being distributed worldwide by Adler & Associates Entertainment.

Since then he has worked on several other projects and traveled to L.A. and San Diego to co-direct and film a movie with Vitaliy Versace called Beverly Hills Bandits that features actors like the Academy Award nominee, Eric Roberts.

In 2016, Josh began filming for the documentary titled Gateway to Hope: Overcoming Heroin. The documentary was released on March 16th, 2018. With a packed theater and an uplifting response from the audience they began receiving requests for the documentary to be played at theaters and churches across the nation. Josh was also nominated for Best Director for a Documentary at the International Christian Film & Music festival in 2019.

In 2019 he filmed a faith-based drama based on a novel called Song of the Tree Frogs written by J.W. Kitson. This film features well-known award winning actors in the faith-based movie industry. Some of those actors are Karen Abercrombie (War Room) and Shannen Fields (Facing the Giants). It has been nominated and won numerous awards in various film festivals across the US and Canada.

In February 2022, Josh teamed up with actress and producer Karen Abercrombie to film a Pure Flix original film that is titled An Angelic Christmas, which was released in November 2022. 

In the summer of 2022, Josh directed and produced Angel Mine which is based off the novel and true events by Jimmy Taaffe. Angel Mine was released in May 2023.

Philip Albenze – Producer

I often get asked “what’s your primary motivation behind making this film”. I’d have to reply by saying this; when I decided to change and rededicate my life, I did it so I would be around for my son. But as time went on and my newfound lifestyle was able to help so many other people, I knew I had found my purpose. 

I frequently rewatch all the motivating and inspirational movies that helped me keep my focus and give me hope while I was struggling to stay on track. My hope and my desire to make this film is to be able to reach anyone who is fighting their own battles, who feel lost and without purpose and help show them that they too are able to reach any goal they set for themselves. Movies are “timeless” and can be around long after we are gone. I want to leave behind a positive message of hope and faith that people can see and feel and know they are all capable of achieving their dreams, whatever they may be.

Christina Sussmann – Writer

Christina began writing in and around 2004 for her home church, and once then went on to work with other churches, colleges, corporations, small businesses, professional athletes, and individual clients from the NE Ohio area to virtually every time zone across the globe. 

She has written for professional athletes in the NBA, and NFL as well as entrepreneurs looking to get their success stories ready for productions or publications. 

She’s also worked with independent filmmakers who are looking for that outside voice to capture the essence they are looking for and others that have an idea for a movie or book, but don’t have time to write or know where to start.

Most recently she launched her company, The Affordable Ghostwriter, that provides writing services for established names and those who are looking to write without losing the credit.
