How it works 

Waking up groggy? It’s usually caused by poor indoor air quality. AirTulip Sleep uses laminar airflow technology combined with ULPA filtration. The air gently flows through the headboard filtering the air and creating a completely clean air zone within seconds ensuring you wake up feeling refreshed and energized. 

Beyond sleeping in a completely sanitized air zone. We understand that getting a good night’s sleep is difficult due to factors without your control. Thus, we added some cool features.

Dual-zone temperature regulations

Create your own personal room temperature! We added an active cooling & heating option for each side of the bed (dual zone). Our laminar flow zone encloses you at this temperature and ensures you won’t feel the other side. 

Temperature can be individually controlled between -7°F cooler and +7°F warmer than the bedroom itself. 

Sleep tracking integration 

You’ll be able to track your own sleep quality with AirTulip! We integrated with your favorite wearables. At the moment we already have the following supported devices: Apple Watch, Fitbit, Oura Ring, and Garmin Fitness Watches. More to come!

History & Background

AirTulip was created by Arjen de Jong. Arjen comes from a family with a long-standing business in cleanroom technology, specializing in aeronautics and aerospace.

Arjen has a Ph.D. in Aerodynamics and is a recognized industry thought leader and expert in fluid dynamics at global organizations including NASA, Porsche, Ferrari, KLM, Lufthansa, and ASML.

Founder’s story

Arjen has suffered from allergies most of his life and with his extensive experience and background, he saw an opportunity to bring this technology into your home for the first time by building the AirTulip Sleep. His intention is to build a product such that you can sleep in completely sanitized air helping improve your sleep quality especially if you suffer from sleep deprivation caused by issues like asthma, allergies, and sleep apnea. But not excluding snoring, and night sweats then this is the solution.

Shipping

All shipping, taxes, customs & VAT fees will be collected separately after the campaign via surveys, and the shipping estimate will go up and down depending on your choice of accessories and the global shipping rate for furniture at the time of fulfillment.

At this moment the sample pricing is expected to go down due to recent progress in product development (the product is expected to be lighter). The shipping costs will be calculated (in partnership with our transport partners) based on your shipping address and our distribution locations (New York and the Netherlands (Barneveld). If you want to pick up the AirTulip Sleep headboard at one of our locations (New york or Barneveld), this is possible as well (no shipping costs will be charged).

We will try to find the best transport and fulfillment partner, and we will communicate about this throughout and after the campaign.

High-powered ULPA filtering.

We use our cleanroom-grade certified Ultra-Low Particulate Air filters (ULPA) that filter 99.9997% of all particles. These filters are 100 times more powerful than standard HEPA filters.

Our filters are normally only available in cleanrooms such as medical facilities and technology development rooms, so you can be assured you’re receiving the very best filtering technology.

Purified air by day and night.

Our product doesn’t just work at night! The AirTulip Sleep has a powerful day mode that provides more clean air into your home than 10 air purifiers combined.

Tested on location.

Our team tests not only in ideal lab conditions but also in real-world locations to get the highest quality performance data. For example, we tested our products in a hotel room to compare two air purifiers with the AirTulip Sleep.

We’ve also tested it below in the home of one of our product testers.

We run continuous measurements for contamination in the room. Below is a comparison between two typical air purifiers and AirTulip Sleep. The graph shows measured particles per cubic meter of air – the goal is to have low levels of measured particle contamination. In time, the air purifiers (the red and orange lines) lower the particles to a certain extent, but not significantly. However, the AirTulip Sleep (blue line) instantly drops the particle count below the graph. 

We cycled ON and OFF after 30 minutes to show how immediate this effect is: there are still particles in the room, but they don’t penetrate the protected breathing zone. We also included the cleanroom classes with black lines according to FED STD 209E (where Class 1 is the highest standard). Our test illustrates that the particle count drops below even the Class 1 threshold. Now you can have cleanroom technology available within your bedroom.

Our Design & Engineering Process.

We used our background in aerodynamics, air purification, and product development to create a product that would bring clean air into homes around the world. We started with a simple question: “How can we bring clean air technology to more people?”

We know the importance of a good night’s sleep on our health, so we knew the bedroom was the best place to start.

We are especially fond of using prototyping quite early in the development process rather than applying this later on after a complete concept development. This way, we actually use prototyping to process the ideas themselves and to help us create a stronger iteration of the idea.

We used our background in fluid mechanics to perform advanced simulations of airflow, helping us optimize our design with highly detailed data.

Soon after, we began extensive testing and iterations. We executed multiple scientific experiments and measurement techniques.

We also invited the user early on into the development process. Through each step of the process, we adjusted and perfected the product as needed to create a functional system.

Alongside our functionality development, we followed a detailed design process for the aesthetics and interfacing of the product. See some of our various design iterations below:

We tested for comfort, fabric technology, look and feel, functionalities, and user experience. We also extensively worked on acoustics and data monitoring. Thanks to these processes and the help of user feedback, we created the final AirTulip Sleep headboard.

We also applied industry standards on design-for-manufacturing and locked in our key manufacturing partners. Our extensive knowledge of production helped us select the best component manufacturers.

We want to ensure quality and are fully involved in the manufacturing process. We quality test every component using in-house developed methods as well as working with independent labs.

The final assembly of your AirTulip Sleep is done locally at two dedicated locations, one in New York for our U.S. customers, and one in the Netherlands for our European, and Asian customers.

What is the AirTulip Sleep?

AirTulip Sleep it’s the next-generation air cleaner for the bedroom and beyond, with high-level technology. It’s designed as a beautiful bedhead to easily blend into your bedroom. The AirTulip Sleep enables you to sleep and live in clean air.

How quiet is the AirTulip Sleep?

The flow is quiet, slow, and steady over a large area. You won’t feel a draft, as it is from the laminar plug of air. In order to get a restful night of sleep, we didn’t only focus on a serene gentle flow speed free of chaos, but also on a whisper-quiet operation. 

We use acoustic engineering and expensive oversized fans running much slower than they can to create a restful night. In day-modus, the AirTulip Sleep generates much less sound than an AC unit, and around the level of someone whispering.

Risks and challenges

We have spent over a year working on the AirTulip Sleep, building multiple working prototypes, testing with beta-testers, and doing everything possible to minimize the risk for our backers.

We have experience with manufacturing, production, and setting up a streamlined assembly line. We run two assembly lines at different locations in order to act as a buffer in case of any issues. We have also sourced at least two suppliers for critical components.

Our team has set up the orders and lead times to directly execute the ordering process. We plan to order parts in batches, with the first batches already ordered during the Kickstarter campaign. We are running tests at independent labs for further product development.

Finally, we know how important it is to stay in contact with our loyal backers. We will provide you with many updates during the process so that you know what the status of your AirTulip Sleep is all the way through.

Environmental commitments

Long-lasting design

The AirTulip Sleep is designed to last. The only replaceable parts are the filters, which will be offered via add-ons and through our online store. We designed the system so the ULPA filters last 6-12 months depending on use. All other components are designed to have a robust and long lifespan.

Sustainable materials

We focus on environmentally sustainable materials. Our acoustics insulation is at least 50% recycled material. We use water-based paints and have dedicated spray booths to minimize emissions. We also optimized our system weight to have fewer materials used per product.

Environmentally friendly factories

We assemble in two locations close to our customers in order to minimize transportation and energy waste. The US market is serviced out of our New York facility, and the European market out of our Netherlands facility. We have optimized the assembly to minimize material waste and have built long-standing relationships with our suppliers.

Sustainable Distribution

We’re optimizing delivery routes to reduce emissions derived from shipping and are using sustainable and recyclable packaging materials wherever possible. We have also applied aerospace engineering methods to be lightweight and strengthen the internal structure of your AirTulip.
