Communication in the Hybrid Workplace
Covid has upended all our lives across the globe. At Audeze, most of us work partially from home and only visit the office on certain days of the week. We’re all juggling work and family life during our new hybrid workdays, where online meetings in a potentially noisy environment have become the daily norm. At least a few attendees are remote in every meeting we hold, and we don’t see that changing any time soon.
We saw an opportunity to create a product that would make everyone’s lives easier and more productive. This was the inspiration for FILTER.
Back to the Future
Even before we developed our award-winning headphones, our first product was a very large planar magnetic speaker array made specifically for military use. It was designed to communicate intelligible audio to civilians and soldiers in war zones. We performed an intelligibility test of this planar array at Edwards Air Force Base, and listeners were able to clearly understand 100% of the words up to one full mile away!
Design Concepts
Almost every conference speaker on the market is cylindrical or amoeba shaped, very bulky and uncomfortably heavy. We wanted a compact, sleek design that would be beautiful to look at and comfortable to hold while offering all the performance, control, and durability that a mobile user needs.
At Audeze, most of our designs and product names have been inspired by our love of science fiction, even the company name itself came from the classic sci-fi film 2001: A Space Odyssey. (Audeze is pronounced just like odyssey— it’s an audio journey, get it?) For FILTER, our design team came up with some very cool concept sketches. Of these, the TARS-inspired design was the overwhelming favorite.

Getting FILTER certified is the next step before mass production. We need to test and get certified for wireless (FCC, BQB, KCC, etc). We expect this to be completed by mid December.
We also plan to get the unit certified for Zoom, Webex, Meets, Teams, etc. We expect these steps to take a little longer. FILTER already works with these apps, the certification is mainly important for B2B sales.
Mass production of FILTER units should start in January 2022. We expect to begin shipping units to customers in February or March.
