B.Brave by SK WiLBUR is a line of stylish, brightly colored backpacks featuring powerful images and original artwork. My backpacks elevate, celebrate, and educate. My mission is to edify and empower young people of all ages by teaching them about important historical figures that provide culturally identifiable representation, while supporting crucial education initiatives.

I was not taught much about Black figures in American history in grade school. In fact, it was not until college, where I took my first Black Studies course, that I learned about anybody Black besides Dr. King and Harriet Tubman. And that’s a tremendous disservice to our children. Representation matters and it fosters self worth and pride in oneself.

Each style features a collectible hang tag with a QR code that, when scanned, will take our “hero-in-the-making” to the company website for immersive, creative, and entertaining video segments of kids like them who share information about “historical superheroes” who embody the spirit of the topic featured on their QR code hang tag.

Kids are encouraged to post their own content about their favorite historical superheroes on social media platforms, like Tik Tok, using a specific hashtag, for a chance to receive free school supplies and other prizes.

My goal, with this crowdfunding campaign, is to get enough pledges (a minimum of 2100 backpacks) to order from our supplier to ensure that I am able to create a broad distribution channel so that B.Brave by SK WiLBUR backpacks are accessible to all. My overall vision is to use the backpacks to foster a sense of community through telling inclusive and ethnically diverse stories of American citizens whose contributions have shaped this country. These superheroes show us that we don’t need to wear capes to make the world a better place.

The Impact

• While we are highlighting historical superheroes who happen to be Black, our brightly colored backpacks will empower kids and families of every hue. The same way that the Black Panther positively represents the zeitgeist of this time, we believe that the stories of these courageous human beings will be similarly celebrated.

• It’s important to point out that in order for my team and I to provide the backpacks as such a competitive price, our minimum order from our supplier is high. If we do not reach our goal on Indiegogo, we will seek out other methods to meet our objective. It may take a little longer, but we’re determined to make B.Brave by SK WiLBUR the success it promises to be!
