It’s The 1970’s! Baha’is Oscar and Freddie DeGruy form what is to become the Baha’i Youth Workshop
Project Summary
My name is Jamal DeGruy, aka J-BiRD The Straybird, aka Mally D, aka Charlie Hayes. I’m a filmmaker, musician, beat maker, music producer and a poet. I’m here to ask you for your help in telling a story. It’s the story of the Baha’i Youth Workshop. To tell the story I’m going to make a documentary.
This documentary captures the inspirational journey of Oscar and Freddie DeGruy. The creators of the original and pioneering Baha’i Youth Workshop. With personal interviews with those involved, photos and archival footage, this film will explore their dedication to bringing unity among the peoples of the world, the empowerment of Baha’i youth and the spreading of Baha-u-llah’s message through the performing arts. This documentary will cover its’ inception, the challenges they faced and its influence on people young and old around the world. From its humble beginnings in their small home on Lafayette Rd in Los Angeles, CA to cities across the globe. This film is a celebration as well as a historical document. It is a celebration of what it means to be a Baha’i. A celebration of the arts. A celebration of the teaching efforts of Baha’is in the 70’s in America. And… A celebration of Oscar And Freddie DeGruy, who created a worldwide movement, spreading the word and teachings of the Baha’i Faith, empowering youth, inspiring future generations and transforming lives.
