Bubble Line Brewing Company – opening early 2025 – will be Minnesota’s first Black woman owned craft brewery.

Brittney Mikell is a pharmacist, homebrewer, and chemist who aims to brew up and provide a culture of joy throughout her brewery and the Rondo community in Saint Paul, MN. Brittney and her team care deeply about the Rondo community and envision the brewery as a place that the Rondo residents, neighboring communities, and the city of Saint Paul will take pride in.

BLBC will use craft beer and other beverages including lattes, mocktails, lemonades, and THC beverages to bring people together and contribute to a renewed sense of community in the Rondo neighborhood.

Our team at Bubble Line Brewing Company aims to lead in many arenas of the craft brewing industry. We are highly skilled and deeply invested in the success of the people around us.  

The owner, Brittney, is often quoted as saying, “I just want to provide a good life for myself and the folks that work for me. It’s just that simple.” 

The head brewer, an expert that has brewed in multiple states, has been quoted as saying, “The beer has to be excellent, right out the gate. First impressions are everything.”  

The passions embodied by the owner and head brewer are optimally balanced, ensuring an amazing experience for the community.

WHAT’S THE NAME ABOUT?

The founder Brittney has a deep love and passion for science and learning.  

In Chemistry, the bubble line is a graph that illustrates the temperature at which the first bubble of vapor is formed while heating a liquid. After surpassing this temperature, the liquid begins to boil. 

As the first Black woman owned and operated brewery in the state of Minnesota, our founder, Brittney Mikell, is ready to pour her compassion and joy into every single beverage, cup and person that Bubble Line Brewing Company will serve. 

Bubble Line Brewing Company will be a source of inspiration through uplifting and exciting the Minnesota brewery scene birthing a community for all to fizz with excitement.

WHY RONDO? 

The overarching goal of Bubble Line Brewing Company is to use beverages as a vehicle for good. Our mission is to make a positive impact by centering our three pillars of business: innovation, putting people first, and environmental sustainability. With these pillars in mind, BLBC will offer community beer-making workshops, brewing apprenticeships for brewers of color, and exceptional employee compensation/benefits. 

While these elements are important, the most important is the historical and cultural relevance of the brewery’s prospective home in Rondo.  In the 1930s and 40’s, Rondo was a vibrant Black cultural, residential, and employment district with many Black-owned businesses. However, in the mid-1950s, local government displaced countless Black residents and business owners by installing interstate 94 through the middle of the corridor. Unfortunately, the effects of this decision are still apparent. Today, there is a distinct lack of options in the area, limiting both leisure and business opportunities for residents. As a native Chicagoan from the south side, Brittney sees many economic and political similarities to her hometown. As she plants roots here, Brittney considers the brewery a contribution to a place that she’s begun to call home. She hopes to honor the legacy of Rondo residents that were displaced from their community in the 50’s and 60’s. 
 

WHAT KINDS OF BEVERAGES WILL WE MAKE?

Bubble Line Brewing Company will serve beverages, not just beer, with robust and innovative flavors. We will offer our three flagship brews along with ever evolving small batch brews which allow customers to try something new every visit. In addition, we will serve lattes, mocktails, lemonades, and THC beverages. Our flagship brews include but are not limited to: 

Hot Hopped Lemonade with Ghost Peppers (non-alcoholic) 

Mango Sunflower India Pale Ale (ABV 5.6%) 

Honeycrisp Apple Blonde Ale (ABV 4.7%) 

Brittney’s Homemade Caramel Latte (non-alcoholic, but very caffeinated)

We welcome and invite flavor ideas and combinations. We want to hear and see what flavors are bursting and peaking the interests of the taste buds in our community! This is a collaborative, joint effort. Let us have some fun and create something spectacular together.

WHERE ARE YOU IN THE PROCESS?

FUNDING:

Did you know that it can cost around $850,000 to open a brewery? Yeah, our jaws dropped too. But we aren’t discouraged! We’re applying for several grants to help offset these expenses, in addition to asking for help from you!

But here’s some good news-

So far, we’ve received a $3000 microgrant and we raised $25k with our initial friends and family campaign. We thought that we would fundraise pretty quietly and that no one would notice us, but we were met with an overwhelming amount of support and we met our goal quite quickly! Given the buzz we’ve gotten, we are excited to launch the public campaign! We hope that the broader community will continue to support us.

PRODUCTS:

We have our four flagship brews all set, and we are working on a 5th! We’re perfecting a Czech Pilsner as you’re reading this. We’re also “in the lab” dreaming up another non-alcoholic craft option.

LOCATION & EQUIPMENT:

• We were lucky enough to find a used brewhouse from one of our favorite breweries. They’re holding on to it for us until we can raise $50k to purchase it.
• We’re still prospecting locations and are getting closer! We can’t say much about this publicly yet, but we’ll update this when we can!
• We’ve gotten so much cool homebrewing equipment/ingredients and we can’t wait to host some public workshops to teach our community how to brew beer at home.
• We scored some basic items that we’ll need for the brewery at a couple of auctions. Mostly boring stuff, like shovels and trash cans, but they’re super necessary!

• We’ll add any other features here as they (hopefully) come.
   

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

This is our large, public, crowdfunding campaign and we hope that you’ll consider supporting us. We are looking for your help in purchasing:

• A brewhouse – which is currently on hold for us at $50k
• 6-8 large tanks – around $20k each 
• Construction costs and labor for our unique buildout – around $300k
