Raising funds for a feature-length dramedy about two witty writers with Down syndrome
Overview
Hello! My name is Sam Hendrian, and I am an independent filmmaker/poet striving to foster empathy through art.
By directing and distributing my second feature film, Decaf Daydreamers, I aim to make the world a more welcoming place for people with disabilities, showcasing their whole personhood and helping break down the boxes and barriers they may have felt confined to in the past. The protagonists of this particular film are poets and dreamers, unique individuals who are both feisty and vulnerable, confident and nervous about their place in society. They prove that “disability” is not a definition but just one of many traits that comprise their beautiful human existence.
Your support of this project will directly ensure countless individuals feel seen in a way that society doesn’t usually see them, cultivating a culture of empathy in a largely apathetic world.
What the Cast Has to Say About the Film
The two leads in the film have already been cast. The delightful Brian Dovey shall be playing Danny, an aspiring writer and hopeless romantic who works in a department store stockroom, and the equally delightful Renee Morneau will be playing Shelby, a sassy bridal store worker who wants to become an English teacher. This is what they and their families have to say about why they’re excited to make this film:
Brian Dovey – “I love the idea of getting to play a character with a girlfriend, which helps tell your story from a real-life point of view, and it adds a warm, romantic touch to the film. I believe the movie tells a wonderful story of human relations and problem-solving. It represents the real world we live in today, and it looks like I get to work with a strong cast of terrific actors and actresses who can help bring the story to life. Thanks for the opportunity to be a part of this.”
Renee Morneau & Family – “We love the script! The story is poignant, mature, and touching. The character of Shelby captures the essence of Renee’s sassy and engaging personality really well. Some of the lines could have come straight from Renee’s own mouth! She wants to play this role with all of her heart and soul.”
What the Producers Have to Say About the Film
I am lucky to be collaborating with two wonderful co-producers, Ramona Saluz and Lilly Diemer, and they are both excited as I am to tell this story.
Ramona – “What a wonderful story and great script. I love that the story explores their everyday lives, challenges, relationships, and how they support each other emotionally.”
Lilly – “I love the storyline of the couple who are writers, the dry witty humor, and the overall message of making the world a better place.”
What We Need & What You Get
We’re looking to raise around $50,000 or more, which will directly go to paying cast/crew members and all additional finances as we go into production in 2026. By contributing any amount, you will automatically see your name in the end credits of the film, and there are a variety of personalized perks activated by contributing certain amounts. Even if we don’t reach the goal, we’ll still make the film! It just might take longer to do so.
