“Why isn’t there a multitool that’s super easy to carry and actually useful?”

That’s the question I asked myself back in 2014 which led me to design Lever Gear’s first product, the Toolcard Pro and crowdfunded it in 2016.  

Traditional multitools work great when you’ve got a job to do, but they’re just too bulky to carry around every day. And nowadays, anything with a knife gets denied from some venues.

So I created the Toolcard, and I still carry it today. I don’t even notice it in my wallet. It’s great for quick jobs, and it’s TSA compliant. 

But designers (and EDC lovers) are never satisfied.

I wanted a tool that was even quicker to access and had a blade. 

Those impossible to open plastic clamshell packages were not going to get the best of me! But I digress.

So I went digging and I found some keychain multitools that were super convenient to carry, but the tools were basically useless (besides the bottle opener, of course.) 

And if I wanted a blade, I’d need to add a keychain utility blade, most of which were too dainty to use (and downright dangerous.) Plus the little screws and parts got loose and lost in a few days. Sigh.  

Where’s the sweet spot!?! 

Where was the multitool that was small enough for a keychain or pocket, with the feel and functionality of a real tool and a safe and useful blade?

It didn’t exist…

And that just isn’t right…

So we, at Lever Gear, sat down and got to work…

The Perfect Size For Everyday Carry

Its slim profile and light weight make the Edge XT easy to carry on a keychain or in your pocket or bag. Yet it’s large enough to grip comfortably when using the tools.

Have you ever noticed how one-piece multitools claim to have a lot of tools, but they’re really just cobbled together wherever they’ll fit, with no hope of actually being useful. 

The size and shape of the Edge XT forms a natural handle with the screwdrivers, prybar, box opener and blade at either end. 

And the hex bit holder actually has a back and bit retention, so your bit won’t go sliding in and out and you can actually apply some pressure on that screw. 

 The Edge XT is quickly accessible in your pocket, and the individual tools are right where you want them. 

Quick And Safe Utility Blade

The locking thumb slider allows one-handed operation to quickly deploy and retract the blade while keeping your hand out of harm’s way.

The safety lock switch prevents accidental blade extension while carrying, so you won’t cut yourself or your pockets.

The famous #11 blade is a jack of all trades. It can cut rope or rip through cardboard to break down boxes like larger utility blades, but the narrow point gives you extra precision and allows tight turns when working on craft projects.

Easily Remove and Replace Blades

Don’t risk getting your pocket knife confiscated at the airport or stadium. The Edge XT lets you ditch the 20 cent blade and keep your tool (and your sanity).

Quick release feature lets you change blades in seconds with any standard #11 craft blade.

Changing blades is as easy as 1 2 3

1. Extend the blade.

2. Use any pointed tool such as a pen, key, paperclip, toothpick, SIM tool (there’s one in your Cablekit) or sharpened stick (just use your Edge) to access the quick release latch through the slot on the back. And gently pull out the blade.

3. Install a new blade by simply sliding in into the blade opening with the thumb slider in the forward position until it clicks into place. 

Durable Metal Construction, Finished Beautifully for EDC

The Edge XT is built to last, with a lifetime warranty to match. The main tool is heat treated 420HC stainless steel making the tools extremely hard and up to any task. The blade cover is anodized aluminum that’s both light weight and scratch resistant.

Update – The Edge Now Includes A Pocket Clip For Quick Access Carry!

One of the benefits of crowdfunding a new product is we get to hear from our customers before the product is finished. Many of you asked if we could make a pocket clip. You spoke and we listened.

After evaluating several options for a clip with our manufacturer, we’ve come up with a design that allows for tip-up or tip-down carry and works great.

Founded by a product designer and mechanical engineer, Lever Gear is focused on designing beautiful products that solve real problems, work flawlessly, and stand the test of time.

We design and develop each product from the ground up in our studio in Greenville, South Carolina, to provide innovative solutions for daily challenges. We prototype, test, and iterate until the design is just right. Then we work closely with our manufacturing partners to execute on the design and ensure the highest quality.

Risks and challenges

This is the forth Indiegogo project for Lever Gear, and our founder, Mike Scully, is a mechanical engineer with over 20 years experience working with manufacturers to bring products to market. We have already begun production tooling and have received working samples from our manufacturer. 

However, there are still risks. We continue to test the Edge prototypes for durability and ways to enhance the design. If we decide to make any significant changes to improve the product it could delay the ship date. In the past few years we’ve seen disruptions to freight shipping. Though things are mostly back to normal, a repeat of this could delay the delivery. Fortunately, the Edge is so small and light that we can switch to air freight to make up for any delays.

On A Personal Note…

I couldn’t be more excited about how the Edge XT has come together. I believe this is the best product we’ve ever made in terms of usefulness and appearance. I received the first production samples from our manufacturer just prior to launch and they are beautiful.

I’ve been carrying the Edge prototype for over three months now and the number of times it has come in handy has surprised even me.
