Thanks to the previous support we’ve received on Kickstarter, our team of innovative designers has been able to produce four incredible design tools already, including the revolutionary Exlicon MX Cutter tool. In total, we’ve been able to accumulate 4000 supporters who have helped us bring our designs to life.

Now, we’ve focused our creativity and ingenuity on creating a premium writing and designing tool – the Exlicon Magnetic Pen. Its unrivalled ergonomic design, multi-functioning refills, and magnetic lid makes it the ideal writing, designing and cutting tool for everyday use as part of a dynamic life.

We wanted to create a writing tool that solved the common complaints of those who write and design every day.

What is the Exlicon Magnetic Pen?

The Exlicon Magnetic Pen is a dynamic tool that allows you to create your best work, as the essential every-day tool for writing, designing and cutting.

We wanted to design a tool for people that design, write, or craft daily, whether they’re designers, writers, architects, businessmen or travelers.

With this in mind, we have formulated the optimal shape shape for continuous handheld use, so that gripping your working tool is never uncomfortable.

With the Exlicon Magnetic Pen, we wanted to reduce hand fatigue and cramping, so that you can produce higher quality work for longer and enhance your experience in the process.

When writing or designing makes up a large portion of your day – and life – using an uncomfortable pen can be the difference between an enjoyable working experience and a bad one. Hand fatigue is a common problem for those who use inferior writing and designing tools.

With this in mind, the Ddiin design team created the Exlicon Magnetic Pen.

The pen’s triangular shape perfectly slots into the user’s natural grip, allowing the fingers to wrap naturally around the tool like an extension of your hand, preventing hand fatigue and ensuring comfort throughout use.

What’s more, the edged, triangular shape doubles up as an anti-roll mechanism. This means the Exlicon Magnetic Pen can’t roll off your desk and disrupt your workflow until you can relocate it.

This feature also makes it less likely that you’ll lose your Exlicon Magnetic Pen, which is built to last forever.

When you stop using your pen, all you need to do is bring the pen cap to the tip, and it will magnetically reattach to the pen.

Conversely, you’ll probably want to place your lid on the tail of your pen while you write or draw, to keep it safe while you’re using the tool. With the magnetic lid, this is easy, as the cap magnetically attaches to both the head and tail of the pen.

The Magnetic Pen is more than just a pen. It’s a multi-functional tool that you can harness by simply switching the tip.

Made of three parts – the cap, barrel (body) and tail – the Exlicon Magnetic Pen is held together by magnetic rings installed within the cutter, which secure the parts together, ensuring you’re able to use the cutter tip safely. The blade is encased within the rings preventing the sharp edge from sticking out and being a safety hazard.

The Exlicon Magnetic Pen is compatible with both pen tips and hobby knife blades. By switching the tips you can use the Exlicon Magnetic Pen as either a pen or a hobby knife.

To switch the tips, all you need to do is rotate the tip already in the Exlicon Magnetic Pen and remove it. Then, you can take your desired tip, rotate it and slot it into the empty pen body to make use of your pen’s multi-functionality.

We designed the Exlicon Magnetic Pen to be effortlessly ergonomic and practical. The Exlicon Magnetic Pen’s triangular design lends the pen its anti-roll capability – thanks to its flat sides and edges – while the rounded edges and dimensions contribute to its comfortable, ergonomic grip.

The Exlicon Magnetic Pen uses a commonly used, easily accessible refill: the Zebra JF refill, in a size from 0.1 to 0.5mm, Pilot BXS-V5RT refill, in a size from 0.38 to 0.5mm, Muji gel ink ballpoint pen refill, from 0.38 to 0.5mm, Pilot P2RF-8EF-B refill in a size of 0.38 to 1.0mm, Pilot BLS-FR5 refill, ranging from 0.5 to 0.7mm, and Pilot refill for G2 pen in 0.38 to 0.7mm. These are roughly 111m long and 6.5 in diameter, which is a perfect fit of the dimensions of the Exlicon Magnetic Pen. You can get a hobby knife refill of the same size.

The use of lead in the production of stationary is commonplace – but it shouldn’t be. Our manufacturing process is free from lead, heavy metals and other substances harmful to human health.

The Exlicon Magnetic Pen is built to be an every-day carry – and we want to ensure there are zero negative consequences when the Exlicon Magnetic Pen becomes a staple in your life.

The Exlicon Magnetic Pen is made from premium aluminum. This makes the pen incredibly durable, corrosion resistant and built to last, so your pen will look – and function – like new for its lifetime.

To store your magnetic pen – along with any interchangeable tips you might need – we’ve created an accompanying high quality, genuine leather pouch.

Though you can store your leather pouch in your bag, we’ve also designed the pouch so that it can be attached and worn on your belt loop/lanyard.

The square disc is an innovative and versatile tool designed to take your drawing skills to the next level. Made with premium-grade stainless steel, this tool can withstand frequent use and is resistant to corrosion, rust, and wear and tear.

With its unique design, the spiral holes are angled at 10° intervals, allowing you to create precise and accurate drawings with ease. The tool measures 5 cm or 1.97 inches on each side, with an indent at the edge indicating the starting point at 27°, 63°, 82°, and 90° angles. By aligning the starting point and rotating the disc until the spiral hole matches the angle being measured, you can accurately determine the angle.

The square disc’s sides also function as a ruler, providing a reliable way to measure lines. With this tool, you can create geometric shapes, technical drawings, and intricate patterns effortlessly. 

The triangular disc is a versatile and durable tool made with brass, ensuring it withstands repeated usage. It is an equilateral triangle with lengths of 5 cm or 1.97 inches on each side, making it ideal for measuring and drawing precise shapes and lines. The triangle is designed to evaluate different measurements of the golden ratio.

The centimeter side and the indented horizontal lines of the triangle contain the biggest golden ratio measurements. Similarly, the dotted lines have a slightly reduced ratio, whereas the solid lines are 5 cm shorter than the dotted lines. The four upward-pointing triangular holes display a golden ratio relationship. Likewise, the downward-pointing triangles also exhibit a relationship.

In addition to its angle measuring capabilities, the holes on the triangular disc can also be used as a guide for drawing. This feature is useful for technical or composition drawing, engineering, and architecture.

The hexagon disc is crafted from high-quality stainless steel, ensuring that it can withstand frequent use and resist corrosion, rust, and wear and tear. Its sides measure 25mm (2.5cm), with 30° angles on the lines and a 4mm distance on each horizontal line.

It is designed as a stencil and measuring tool for creating symmetrical arc drawings. By tracing along the lines and flipping the tool, various arc curves can be created, which are useful for architectural designs. The disc can also be used to make shapes such as hexagons, triangles, squares, and rectangles by aligning the holes with the corresponding lines. In addition, the holes can be utilised to create circles of varying dimensions through the rotation of the disk, keeping one pen stationary and moving the other.

We designed and tested a number of prototypes before successfully creating the Exlicon Magnetic Pen.

To begin, we 3D printed our prototypes to determine the best shape, size and grip for the pen, before moving to versions with laser-engraved markings and finally machining our aluminium prototypes.

Our final product is CNC machined with laser-sharp precision that ensures easy, ergonomic use in every centimetre.

As such, the Exlicon Magnetic Pen is sustainable to the core – we ensure this in three ways.

The aluminium we use to make the Exlicon Magnetic Pen is 100% recyclable, so if you ever want to dispose of your pen, you’ll be able to recycle it, rather than throw it away.

This means that the materials used in the Exlicon Magnetic Pen will go on to have another life, and be reused to serve another purpose – rather than become waste in landfill.

To manufacture our multifunctional writing and design tool, we use durable, high quality materials that have been proven to withstand both time and impact. The aeronautical aluminium we use ensures maximum durability so that your Exlicon Magnetic Pen can be used by you for life.

What’s more, the pen’s anti-roll design stops your pen from tumbling off surfaces and onto the floor, where it endures impact. Accessories like the pen stand and leather pouch can also help to protect your pen – and the interchangeable tips – both at your desk and on the go, so your pen always looks as good as new.

I’m Sofia Lee, an individual product designer from Hong Kong. Founded in 2019, from the name “Ddiin”. The name “Ddiin” stands for the 5 aspects I care the most: desire, design, innovation, ideas and needs. With that in mind, I made improvements from the previous Magcon and Exlicon and designed the upgraded version Exlicon MX. This human-centered design approach allowed me to continuously improve my designs.

Risks and challenges
This is Ddiin’s fourth Indiegogo campaign. As such, we have a wealth of experience and tons of valuable connections with manufacturers.

However, both shipping and supply chains have been disrupted by the pandemic and the manufacturing industry hasn’t quite recovered yet.

As such, although we’ll do best to get the Exlicon Magnetic Pen to you as soon as possible, it’s possible there will be delays – but we’ve worked hard to make our multi-functional writing and designing tool worth the wait (if there is one).

More than this, since we haven’t yet manufactured the Exlicon Magnetic Pen you’ll receive, the exact specifications of the final product may be slightly different than shown here. For example, if the estimated weight is 120 grams, the final product may end up being slightly lighter or heavier.

Having said this, there’s nothing that will change significantly – and we can assure that every slight discrepancy will be to the advantage of the Exlicon Magnetic Pen’s design.
