A film about the artist’s struggle.

Story

Can we manifest anything we dream about?

Where does inspiration come from? Can self-expression help us understand and improve ourselves? The answers to these questions are at the heart of Feel The Flow, SpiceTech Productions’ first feature length documentary. A film about overcoming self doubt so that you can find your voice, and honestly express yourself. A film about the artist’s struggle.

We believe that, inside of every person, is a creative soul dying to break free.

For many of us, we struggle to engage this essential part of who we are. Its not that all of us are born to sing in front of millions of people- but if you aren’t doing anything creative in your life, we would argue that you’re missing out on an entire world of both self-expression, and self-discovery.

The journey of an artist isn’t simply just rewarding. It is a journey of balance, sacrifice, and compromise. It is, simply put, a struggle. But it is a struggle which the artists in this film have chosen without regret. The martial artists, performers, musicians, technologists, and entrepreneurs featured in Feel the Flow represent the hard work, passion, and perseverance inside of every person who aims to manifest their dreams.

Help us finish our film!

To say that making a feature film is a time-consuming, expensive effort is an understatement. This is especially true for us in the “Feel the Flow” crew, who have so far funded this film out of our own pockets. That’s right- no angel investors, no big corporate sponsors, no nothing. Just a small crew of half a dozen or so investing their time, energy, and money.

For most of us in the crew, this is our first feature film. We have found that, in many ways, making a feature is a lot like starting a small business- its a full-time job where you pay to work. If you have any hope of making something worthwhile, your collective funds will first drop into the red. That’s just how it goes.

And here’s the problem: we can’t afford to complete this project on our own.

That’s where you come in.

If you help us reach $50K, we will be able to finish Feel the Flow, and make something truly special.

Reaching this goal means that we can make our dream a reality: to spread the message of this film with the world. We believe in it just that much, and we want everyone to see what we’ve been working on for the last two years.

Please donate, follow us on social media, share our posts, and talk about our project with everyone who will listen! Every little bit helps. You have the ability to help us achieve our goal, and we can’t do this without you!

Director’s Statement

Synopsis

After feeling unfulfilled by the direction of his life, Ashish Lohra, a first-time filmmaker from India, experienced a call to adventure. A decade of working in the LA tech scene left him with a deep desire to pursure art and entrepreneurship, which eventually inspired him to find and document like-minded people from Los Angeles.

Through this film, we hope to celebrate the creative spirit and resolve needed to bring a vision home. It’s not all about the destination however – we focus on our artists’ journeys and learnings in the face of difficulty. We look at what it means to adapt to new situations, and how to balance work and play so that we can be sustainable in our practice. We learn about overcoming fear of failure & the apprehension of being judged, all so we can explore and express ourselves without barriers.

Ultimately, this film is an ode to all the artists that we have a chance to collaborate with as part of this journey. We hope to present an audiovisual spectacle that will immerse you in the Los Angeles underground, a world teeming with music, martial flow, technology and emotion. A world of inspiration.

Crew Bios

Below are brief biographies for the members of Feel the Flow’s core filmmaking team.

Ashish Lohra (Director/Writer)

For most of his career, Ashish has worked at various creative technology companies focusing on gaming, sports streaming, and spatial tech (VR/AR). He has recently switched his focus towards filmmaking. Ashish’s dream is to build SpiceTech into a global creative technology company which promotes self discovery through self expression. Using art and tech, he wishes to empower artists across the world to overcome geopolitcal hurdles and co-create.

David Neyland (Producer/Editor)

David is a producer, video editor, and screenwriter from Los Angeles. His need for self-expression drew him to the themes of “Feel the Flow”.  David believes that engaging in creativity is not a luxury, but a necessity for a balanced way of life. When he was asked to join the team, David did so without hesitation. For David, its about more than making a good movie. Its about making the best damn thing possible on the shoulders of a team.

Rasik Srinath Ramesh (Music Director)

Rasik is an engineer, musician and game developer from Mumbai, India. After moving to Los Angeles ten years ago, he became captivated by local tech and art scenes. Rasik quickly understood one of his chief goals: create thought-provoking experiences which connect our analog selves to our digital reality. Rasik aspires to build music technology that shrinks the gap between ideas and art.

Shwetaank Gupta (Musician/Brand Ambassador)

Shwetaank, aka Shwe G, is a blues guitar player, touring musician, and recording artist hailing from Ahmedabad, India. During his education at Berklee College of Music, Shwe donned the hat of a producer, songwriter, and composer. Shwe is excited to join the “Feel the Flow” team- contributing both the sound of his guitar and his passion for market outreach. He believes that practice, self-expression, and branding are all useful tools for success.

Major Theme: Martial Flow

Martial flow is a blend of martial arts discipline and movement art, which typically involves the use of performance weapons, or “props”. Martial flow artists often douse their props in flammable liquid and light them on fire before they flow.

Below are brief biographies for three artists in our film who practice “martial flow”.

Kenton McDougall

Kenton McDougall is a beloved fire performer in Southern California’s Martial Flow community. A veteran of the scene, he is particularly well-known for his pioneering fire performances with nunchucks. He continues to innovate by building his own brand of fire-spinning props.

Jean Williams

Jean is an active member of the Martial Flow arts community in Southern California. His love for living in the movement has helped him discover himself as a man of many titles: martial artist, fitness instructor, fire performer and teacher.

Ariana Zhang

Ariana is a fire spinner and martial artist by passion, and a chef by trade. She believes there’s nothing like the feeling of freedom when playing with fire. Through Feel the Flow, she wishes to spread that feeling to as many people as possible. Ariana strives to bring the heat wherever she goes.

Major Theme: Electronic Music Tribe

EMT artists include underground electronic musicians of various styles. What the two artists below have in common – along with many others in the scene – is their passion for developing a sense of community around their music.

Below are brief biographies for two artists in our film who belong to EMT, or the “Electronic Music Tribe”.

dela Moon

dela Moon is an organizer of the Moontribe Collective, whose legendary full moon gatherings are at the core of Southern California’s underground electronic music scene. As a DJ and Producer, she is renowned for her expansive range – from dnb, to halftime, to psychedelic downtempo.

Chief Jesta

Chief Jesta is the founder of Noise Revolt – an art collective and label based out of Los Angeles. Jesta is loved by many in Southern California’s underground electronic music scene for his innovative beats from drum & bass, to breakbeats and techno. Music is his soul’s breath.

Major Theme: Spatial Digital Future

There are many manifestations of spatial digital future tech, such as virtual reality, alternate reality, and mixed reality. Artists in this field aim to not immerse us, but to expand our experiences through art.

Below are brief biographies for two artists in our film who have helped to developed technology in pursuit of a “spatial digital future”.

Nathan Burba

Nathan Burba is an American engineer, media artist, and entrepreneur. He is Co-Founder and President of Survios, a virtual reality company based in Los Angeles, California. Nathan strives to intuitively express his creativity, and believes Feel the Flow captures the essence of that struggle.

Christina Heller

Christina is the CEO of Metastage, an XR/AR/VR studio that brings real people and performances into digital worlds through volumetric capture and complementary tools. Metastage is the first US partner for the Microsoft Mixed Reality Capture system and is located in Los Angeles.

What are we doing with the money we raise?

While production has been underway for over a year, we require additional production, and after that, we will need to complete our full post-production phase. Additional production will include artist interviews, performance footage, and shooting B roll. Post-production will involve video editing, sound editing, composing, mixing, and mastering, among other things.

The budget for this film, like all feature film projects, will need to be spread across many different departments, people, and resouces in order for us to reach the finish line. We want to ensure that, not only do we make the best film possible, but that each contributing member to this project is paid fairly for their time and efforts.

Should we reach our $50,000 goal, the money will be roughly distributed as follows:

$15,000 for our core pre-production and production departments (i.e. Director, Producers, Writers, etc)
$20,000 for other departments and contract work (i.e. Marketing Director, Cinematographer, Additional Producers, Legal, Accounting, etc)
$15,000 for post-production departments (i.e. Video Editing, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Mastering, etc)
