A film about Josh and his journey to find his own “True North”

Story

Short Summary

This documentary follows the inspiring journey of Josh Bogle, a quadruple amputee who does not let anything get in his way. From snowboarding to big wave surfing, Josh believes there is no limit to what he can accomplish if he puts his heart and soul into everything. It has been almost 11 years since Josh lost his limbs, and in 2018 he learned to surf, and since then has become a world class adaptive surfer who is following his dream of becoming a para-surfing world champion and big wave surfer. As of 2021, Josh is the first ever quadruple amputee to surf and stand on two prosthetic legs. Josh lives his life with ultimate gratitude. Through his story, he hopes to encourage audiences to never give up on themselves, have gratitude for life and give back to the ocean & environment around us all. Josh was determined to never allow his disabilities to get in the way and has pushed himself to the limits to achieve his goals. With amazing determination, resilience and dedication to the sport, Josh has become a role model for others living with physical disabilities, especially adaptive athletes. Through this film, viewers will be inspired to never give up on their dreams no matter the struggle they face.

  • My Name is Matty Schweitzer, (Owner of Island Eye Productions LLC) and I am a professional Cinematographer of over 12 years and Muti-generational ocean athlete. I have worked on Major commercial sets, feature films and currently working on “Flying Theaters”. My family is very well known in the surf industry and what started out as helping Josh get introduced to the ocean, has turned into a friendship and partnership that I hold dear to my heart.
  • One of Josh’s biggest personal goals is to become an ISA Para-surfing World adaptive Champion. He has been competing for the last few years, raising funds to get him to each event and find support. The adaptive surfing community is a tight knit group of athletes that share a love for the ocean and inspiring the youth to be positive steward of the land & sea.
  • Your contributions will not just help us tell Josh’s story, but also help Josh create a career as an adaptive athlete by using this film to gain more sponsors and support to pay for his prosthetic legs, medical bills, rent, travel and competitions. Josh has held many jobs over the years to get by, such as working in a sushi restaurant, running farm stands, doing yard work and anything that someone will give him the opportunity at. He will try his best, before saying or even thinking that it is something that he is not capable of.

What We Need & What You Get

  • To fund this film we are seeking out $60,000 in total to get this film finished. We still have 2 separate trips that we need to film and document; 1) Flying out to the ISA World Championships and documenting his run at world champion. 2) Flying to his hometown of Jacksonhole WY, to film content of his hometown and get the visuals for that part of our storyline. Both trips are estimated to cost $8,000 total. $30,000 – $40,000 is for the post production process including editing, sound design, graphic design, etc which is estimated to take 2 – 3 months of full time post production. Another $10,000 will be for Music licensing rights, distribution package & marketing/advertising. Any leftover funds will go directly to Josh, which he will be able to use for his personal expenses and medical bills.
  • We are so grateful for each and every donation big and small, and would like to send anyone who donates over $300 a signed poster of Josh surfing on his prosthetic legs! The first EVER Quadruple amputee to do so!!!
  • If we do not reach our entire goal, we will scale down the project and still continue to release a short version mini doc that will be able to help Josh use as leverage when reaching out to brands and individuals for financial support.

The Impact

  • Josh truly lives life with gratitude, honesty and love. I want to help Josh create this dream because he really does deserve it. He is constantly giving back to his community, volunteering at events and taking care of the land & ocean. I truly believe that creating this film will change many peoples lives for the better. He has impacted me in ways that no one else ever has, and I am eternally grateful for the lessons I have learned from Josh and the friendship that he has given me. I am sure that all who have the opportunity to watch this film, will leave feeling inspired to chase their own dreams.
  • I recently finished a documentary film about my own family titled “Broken Molds” which is a story of my family inventing the sport of Windsurfing and the future of Ocean sports. It is currently available on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Vimeo on Demand, and Redbull TV. Please check it out to see some of my work alongside my teammates & producers Scott Shoemaker & Jace Panebianco.
  • I also have created a film in 2022 alongside CEO & Executive Producer Ola Shaw, with the “Flight of Aloha” flying theatre which is currently being played at Americas Largest indoor waterpark in Wisconsin, and soon opening our own theatre in Lahaina, Maui!

Risks & Challenges

The biggest challenge that I have with this film is how we can use Josh’s experiences and story to inspire others to live life with gratitude and chase their own dreams big or small. Josh does not want to be famous or live like a king. He simply wants to make the world a better place and encourage people find and chase their passions.

I Believe that with my experience in filmmaking and storytelling, Josh and I will be able to overcome this challenge and rise to the occasion.
