240W of GaN power, 4 USB-C ports, and 3 spacious AC nodes in a package that’s out of this world…

Story

Moonbase is more than just a power strip—it’s a futuristic command center for your gaming setup, creative workspace, or office on the moon. With a sleek, futuristic lunar base-inspired design, it combines the best of both worlds: a power strip with 3 spacious AC “nodes” and a 240W GaN USB-C charger with 4 USB-C ports. Ultra fast charging for 7 devices at once including multiple laptops, gaming handhelds, tablets, phones, and more—all while keeping your setup clutter-free and looking interstellar.

One of the most annoying thing about most of today’s portable electronics is that it’s no longer as simple as just plugging in a device to the wall – now with rise of USB standards we’ve introduced an extra charging brick between the legacy power strip and the USB cable to our device. To add further insult, as power demands grow higher these chargers have swelled in size to support more powerful devices.

The original iPhone charged at 5W, now we’re charging laptops at 140W! With so many power hungry portable electronics of today (and tomorrow) we need a solution beyond a pile of charging bricks on power strips. Moonbase is designed from the ground up to optimize for today and tomorrow’s charging needs.

At Genki, we were one of the pioneers to develop and adopt first generation GaN (Gallium Nitride) technology. In fact we raised over $2M here on Indiegogo back in 2019 with the launch of the Covert Dock – a 30W charger with a hidden Nintendo Switch dock built inside. Now we’re flipping that concept around and hiding a GaN charger within a power strip.

The advantage of GaN over traditional Silicon-based chargers is that there is higher efficiency – which allow it to offer more power in a compact size at a cooler temperature. They’re also more light-weight and can maintain faster charging speeds safely. Fast forward five years and now we’re able to build GaN chargers with 8x more power – 240W.

Unlike other power strips that have built-in USB ports, Moonbase actually has the power to charge today’s portable devices. 5W might’ve been okay a decade ago if you needed to power an iPod, but today’s flagship Apple and Samsung smartphones can charge up to 45W.

Moonbase has 4 USB-C ports, with the maximum charge speed being 140W – enough to charge a 16” M4 MacBook Pro half way in just 30 minutes. For those playing power hungry gaming handhelds like the ROG Ally, you can also enjoy “Turbo Mode” performance with 100W charging – all without having to find large charging brick.  When multiple ports are being used simultaneously you can refer to this chart for the power distribution:

Nodes? Yeah we wanted to call these bulbous AC outlets “nodes” because it’s just not fair to compare these to your typical cramped outlets designed for the last century. It’s crazy how many plugs today will block up to 2-3 of your ports. We know that not everything is USB powered so it makes sense to have 3 spacious ports to power more stationary devices.

Combining both the AC Nodes with the USB-C ports you really do get one power strip that can charge your entire digital setup.  Here’s a look at how I use the Moonbase as well as some others who got to use Moonbase over these past weeks:

So I use it for my work/game station. Essentially I’m switching between reviewing our product development, various video conferences, planning and creating campaigns, and of course playing games while testing new hardware and accessories.

Alex works remotely as a product manager for a big fintech startup and uses Moonbase to power his remote workstation. He also has extra ports to charge his running gear like earphones and Garmin watches as he’s always training with his dog for their next Spartan race podium.

Cheryl is always meeting people in incubators and co-working spaces, meeting with all the new consumer tech startups around the world. She uses Moonbase often with her teammates so they can have collaborative work sessions without having to worry about creating a labyrinth of cables and chargers.

Jennifer has a busy career building global communities for a shared corporate office company and wants her home to be a clean restful space. She setup Moonbase to declutter the living room space. The family has all sorts of gadgets and devices that need to be charged especially game controllers for all the parties she hosts.

XY has all sorts of extreme hobbies like taking his car to the track, designing and flying custom-built drones, and road biking across rural mountainscapes. In his free time he designs and makes epic keyboards. Moonbase has been essential for him to charge all his hobby and creator gadgets in one place without looking and matching various custom chargers.

We know our community spans the globe, so we’ve designed Moonbase nodes to be compatible with over 150 countries, covering 95% of the world’s population. However, producing regional plug variations requires significant changes to internal electronics and certification, so we can only manufacture them if we receive at least 240 orders per version (one person per watt!)  — realistically we need 500 to break even. If we don’t hit 240, we’ll let you decide on whether you’d like to get a refund or another model. That’s where we need your help: spread the word in your local communities to bring Moonbase to your region, as your support is essential given our limited outreach beyond the U.S.

We have two colorways to help fit and match your environment. We like to think of this as the default colorway and those that enjoy dark mode:

Additionally we’ve added a capacitive button to adjust the light colors and effects, allowing you to match your environment or mood—or simply turn it off.

We don’t typically redesign our USB-C cables for new projects, but Moonbase is a special case. Introducing Moonlink, four USB-C cables tailored for any length and performance needs. Did you know that most USB-C cables max out at 60W charging (including our past cables, except those paired with the TurboCharger).

Our flagship cable, Moonlink+, is a USB4 cable that handles 240W charging, 40Gbps data transfer, and features a built-in LED display. It fully utilizes the 140W charging port and comes in a handy 1m/3.3ft length. The other Moonlink cables support up to 100W charging and come in versatile lengths:

  • Moonlink-S: 0.3m/1ft – perfect for clean, nearby charging.
  • Moonlink-M: 1m/3.3ft – your go-to length for across-the-table use.
  • Moonlink-L: 1.8m/6ft – ideal for reaching a different desk or level.

A unique touch: when you plug in one end of a Moonlink, the other end glows to act as a flashlight, helping you find the port. Once connected, the light turns off to avoid distractions.

If interested, we offer an add-on perk: all four cables in one set at a discounted price. It’s a win-win—replace your outdated cables while streamlining our packaging process.

Whether it’s protecting your devices from harm and more importantly the safety of your family and pets – Moonbase is built to the highest standards of safety and made in an experienced manufacturer with a track record of making power solutions for the biggest brands.

We also have comprehensive circuit protections built into Moonbase:

  • OCP (Overcurrent Protection): Prevents excessive current from flowing through the circuit, protecting devices and the strip from damage.
  • OVP (Overvoltage Protection): Shields connected devices from dangerously high voltages.
  • SCP (Short Circuit Protection): Instantly cuts power if a short circuit is detected, preventing overheating or fire hazards.
  • TCP (Temperature Control Protection): Monitors and manages internal temperatures to avoid overheating during heavy usage.
  • MFP (Multiple Fault Protection): Ensures safety by detecting and addressing multiple simultaneous faults, maintaining reliable performance.

We unveiled TurboCharger recently which is essentially a portable Moonbase.  It’s the world’s first (and only) 100W flat GaN charger so it packs easy in any of your bags. It can fast charge all of your devices across its two USB-C ports just like Moonbase.

We got a lot of feedback from our backers from the UK, HK, and Singapore how much they wished TurboCharger could be easily packed as those of us in the US, and so we’ve somehow managed to get those mega prongs foldable and incorporated into TurboCharger.  What’s new is that we managed to incorporate a unique Type G foldable prong to it – we’re happy to say that we’re the only one’s that have this on a charger over 60W.

Oh and if you really want to go all-in, you can plug in 3 TurboChargers into Moonbase and transform it into a 540W 10-port USB-C desktop ultra charger.  Maybe you’re a restaurant needing to charge a ton of iPad menus, setting up a long workshop, or preparing to host a LAN party, whatever you need serious charging for, checkout the Moonbase Expansion perk.

We’ll be showcasing Moonbase at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas from January 7-10th at the Indiegogo booth.  Come see it in person, charge your phone, laptop, or handheld, and say hi.  There will be free drinks on Thursday evening, so hopefully we’ll see some of you there!

Genki is an indie development team with experience in making a broad array of innovative consumer and gaming tech. It was founded by myself (Eddie) and Chris who met at IDEO many moons ago – and to this day we’re deeply involved with the whole product development process – from ideation to prototyping to user testing to design for manufacturing to production. It’s a labor of love and we have many others to thank as well for helping us bring this side quest to life:

  • Sihao for managing the project and ensure the team delivers on time
  • XY for shooting the video and taking photos on short notice
  • Neil for spreading the message to all our fans and soon-to-be fans
  • Nanjin for creating the graphics for this page to keep you engaged
  • Ben for navigating the logistics of getting this packed and delivered to everyone
  • And all who volunteered to test and give feedback on Moonbase through its development
  • No agencies were used or harmed in the making of this project
