Keep your sourdough starter consistently active and happy so you can bake your best bread!

Story

Sourdough bakers…we have a problem: chilly starter.

We all know that if we want great bread, we need an active starter. Starter is most active when the temperature is 75-82ºF. That’s just a little too warm for most of us. Most of us keep our homes cooler…maybe 68-70ºF. “Room Temperature” makes our starters sluggish and our baking even harder.

Meet Goldie by Sourhouse: A Warm, Safe Home for Your Sourdough Starter

Goldie elegantly warms your starter, bringing it up to the “Goldilocks Zone” of 75-82ºF – not too hot, not too cold.

Sourdough Bakers Love Goldie

I love my Goldie. I realized it has really helped me focus on my starter health and maintenance and to help me get to know my starter better than I did before…

– Mike Hilburn – The Sourdough Podcast

If you are struggling with getting to know your starter a bit better and wanting to put your starter on a schedule that is ideal for you, Goldie is amazing!

– Paulina Muratore – @nokneadtoworry

Easy to Use, Easy to Plan Your Bake Day

All you need to do is pop your starter inside Goldie. Use your favorite starter jar or our easy-to-clean Sourhouse Starter Jar. Flip the auto-warming switch on if you want your starter to be most active. You can always turn the auto-warming switch off if you want your starter at room temperature. Now you can count on your starter being ready on time.

Just Enough Warmth = Easier, Faster & Tastier Bread

Don’t let room temperature stand between you and better bread. With auto-warming turned on, the incubator tracks the temperature inside the glass cloche and provides just enough gentle warmth to keep your starter happy. Goldie will never overheat your starter.  Best of all…you can shave an hour or more off of the typical doubling time of starters whether you keep it in the fridge or on the counter.

On those days, when you don’t want your starter super active, you can always turn Goldie’s auto-warming function off.

Just Enough Information to Understand Your Starter

Goldie’s top temperature light is always on helping you understand how your starter is feeling.

  • Blue when your starter is feeling chilly and sluggish in your cool kitchen.
  • Gold when your starter is just right, tucked into that Goldilocks Zone, healthy and active
  • Red when your kitchen has gotten too hot, overheating your starter and then exhausting it.

Most baker’s kitchens are in the blue all year round. Goldie’s job is to keep your starter out of the blue zone when ever you want active starter.

Live with these three temperature lights for a bit and you will start seeing the world through the eyes of your starter. You starter will become less mysterious and more dependable.

Just in Case: Cooling for Hot Kitchens

What if your AC breaks on a hot summer day and you do see Goldie’s temperature lamp turn red?

Well we made the Sourhouse Cooling Puck to help you get back into the Goldilocks Zone.

Just take a Cooling Puck out of the freezer and put it on top of your jar to cool things down while you are preparing your starter for a bake. Goldie will provide just enough warmth to keep your starter from dropping below the Goldilocks Zone while using a Cooling Puck.

Protect the Mother of your Sourdough

No more worries about accidentally baking your starter in the oven (heaven forbid)! The enclosed, food safe design protects your starter from drafts and intruders.

Reduces Clutter to Keep Your Spouse Happy

The incubator is designed to create a dedicated spot for your starter in your kitchen. Goldie’s small footprint effortlessly fits into a modern kitchen. Having a dedicated, tidy spot for your baking reduces the clutter that annoys our spouses.

Goldie is water resistant and easily to clean with a damp sponge.

Save Energy vs DIY Warming Methods

Don’t warm up a whole oven for a jar of starter. The plug-in design uses low-wattage, just-enough warming technology to reduce the energy costs of maintaining your starter vs DIY methods.

Watch Your Starter Rise

Goldie’s borosilicate glass cloche is transparent so you can always see your starter wherever you are in your kitchen. Watching your starter is the best way to get to know it.

Celebrate Your Love of Sourdough

Sourdough baker tools are too often banished to cupboards. You should have a place to showcase your love for sourdough baking in your kitchen. We designed Goldie to hold its own next to your fancy coffee maker and expensive mixer. At your next dinner party be ready to for all of the questions about sourdough baking.

Goldie Works Internationally

We are able to ship Goldie with a USB plug because it uses so little power, so Goldie is ready to work wherever you live in the world.

All you need is your local USB to wall adapter.

Operating voltage is 100~240V, 50~60Hz.

Really…Sourdough Bakers Love Goldie

I highly recommend it! You’ll have a lot of fun too. And you can control your temperature, which is one of the biggest variables when making sourdough…

Will My Favorite Starter Jar Fit Inside Goldie?

Meet the Easiest-to-Clean Starter Jar in the World

Goldie will likely work with your favorite starter jar, though we hope the Sourhouse Starter Jar becomes your new favorite. We designed it to be the easiest-to-clean starter jar in the world.

You see, there are no threads where your starter can collect and gunk up. The lid hugs the outside of the jar with just enough friction to be secure while still letting your starter breath.

The jar has a flat bottom, so it gets great contact with Goldie’s warming base for efficient warmth transfer.

It is made of very clear, borosilicate glass so it is easy to see any bits of dry flour that need to get mixed up into your starter. And of course, the jar has straight sides so it is easy to mix, clean and track the rise of your starter.

On the sides of each PINT size jar are dots in 50ml and 100ml increments for judging when your starter has doubled (or tripled).

Our QUART size jar has 100ml and 200ml dots for those of you who like to keep larger starters or to build a levain in advance of a bake.

Both the PINT and QUART jars leave enough clearance inside Goldie to use a Sourhouse Cooling Puck.

For size reference, all of the pictures of Goldie on this page have a PINT jar inside.

Each jar comes with a gold rubber band too.

Shipping & Delivery

We are planning to ship to most countries in the world. We are working with a fulfillment company to make shipping as simple as possible.

Shipments that could not be delivered due to an inaccurately provided address (including failure to update an old address) will incur additional costs to be reshipped. Due to the size of your rewards, we cannot ship to PO Boxes. Please be aware that we cannot mark any shipments as gifts due to legality issues.

EU Friendly! With our new fulfillment partners, we are now able to ship to the EU Delivery Duties Paid (DDP).

UK VAT: We will collect UK VAT on your behalf. It is included in the price  you pay for shipping.

VAT & Taxes everywhere else: backers from all other countries are responsible for their own VAT, customs fees, and other taxes.

Add-ons: Add-ons include extra jars and cooling pucks. Additional Goldie + Pucks add to a reward tier ship at the relevant Goldie + Puck price.

Estimated Delivery: Once production is complete on all orders, we will provide updates for shipping dates. International shipping can be subject to unexpected delays that are outside of our control. However, we will do our utmost to ship within the predicted time frame.

When we say shipping right now is tough, we mean it. We are targeting October 2022 as our delivery window but we are seeing examples of shipments getting stuck on boats for months. In the case of a significant delay and facing the costs of shipping in the November/December period we may not be able deliver until February 2023. We will keep you in the loop.
