Documentary film about using psilocybin-assisted therapy for mental health issues.

Story

We are two women collaborating to create a documentary film about psilocybin-assisted therapy used to help people recover from mental health issues in the United States.  We are located in Las Cruces, New Mexico and we are passionate about producing a film to educate the general public about this groundbreaking technique for helping people heal from anxiety, depression, anger, PTSD, relationship problems, guilt/shame, addiction, and so many other mental health issues.

This film will profile three clients as they are guided by a licensed professional counselor through a psychedelic mushroom journey of healing.  We will be following these participants through the process of assessment and preparation, the journey itself, and the follow-up sessions afterwards.

Currently there are other documentary films that show psilocybin-assisted therapy, but most of them show this work being performed outside of the country in Mexico, Jamaica, and Costa Rica.  Some of you might be aware that currently there is quite a bit of research and clinical trials being performed in the United States and there are many therapists across this country that are effectively using psilocybin to help clients heal trauma.  We want to educate people on how therapists are using the clinical models on clients effectively in the United States.

Psilocybin use is illegal across the country but it has been decriminalized in some states, cities, and counties.  Criminalization of psilocybin is really such a shame because when used safely in a therapeutic setting, psilocybin can provide healing that is unparalleled as compared to other non-psychedelic treatments .  Many clients that have undergone this psilocybin treatment say that they experience years of therapy in one single day.

Our primary goal is to help delineate this treatment from recreational use and show how, with an appropriate therapy setting, this treatment can offer significant relief from mental health issues that plague our nation.  We want to fight the stigma that was created from non-therapeutic use.  We perform this work in a safe environment focusing on set, setting, and integration; all of which have been proven to increase effectiveness.  Overall, we want to help the general public understand that this treatment is a game changer, when done properly.

Our secondary goal in creating this film is to help progress the field of counseling.  At this time, many therapists are hesitant to offer psilocybin-assisted therapy because it is currently not widely supported in the field mostly due to the legal status.  There are practitioners doing this work in every state of this country; however, most are doing this work underground due to fear of reprisal both legally and professionally.  I believe this is mostly because people do not understand how this medicine works.  My hope is that by documenting the process, we can change attitudes and beliefs, creating support for this type of treatment.  For the practitioners that are doing this work, we are all fighting hard to be heard by the therapeutic community. This treatment works and helps those suffering tremendously.

Why do we need funding?  There are a variety of reasons.

  1. We will need to travel to Colorado for the treatment, where psilocybin is legal.  We do plan to film the pre and post-care in Las Cruces.  We will need to fund the travel and lodging costs for at least 4 production people and 3 participants.
  2. We have to secure and fund a treatment location in Colorado where they will allow us to film this documentary.
  3. We need to purchase some filming equipment and supplies that meet the high quality standards required by most streaming companies.
  4. We do need to hire at least two crew members for their time and services for this production.  The film director and the counselor will be donating their time.
  5. There are various bank and business fees/costs required to establish the production company and film a documentary.
  6. Because safety is paramount for us, we are not willing to cut any costs when it comes to implementing appropriate safety measures.  This includes making sure that we have all the appropriate supplies and resources to prepare each participant to prepare them and then help them integrate their experience properly.
  7. We will not be charging the selected participants.  We feel they should receive the treatment at no cost in exchange for allowing us to film and share their experience with the world.  We appreciate that participants will be willing to help us show the world how beneficial this treatment can be and want them to be rewarded for their courage to do so.

Please help us raise money so that we can help educate and raise awareness about this effective treatment method.  We believe strongly in psilocybin-assisted therapy and we are confident this film will be groundbreaking in helping to spread the word.

If you cannot provide a donation, please help us spread the word in hopes that we can reach as many people as possible.  Thank you very much for your support!
