We are students from UWC ISAK trying to raise money for the Lebanon crisis.

Story

Introduction

Thank you for taking the time to read about this project amongst many others.

My name is Yuiko and I am a student at UWC ISAK Japan, a boarding international school in Karuizawa, Japan.

My school has a class called ‘Leadership’, where we spend three hours every week planning and carrying out student-led projects to solve social problems.

As part of this class, we are thinking of holding a crowdfunding to support people in Lebanon who are suffering from the economic crisis.

“What would you do if one day we suddenly had the worst level of economic crisis in the world since the mid-19th century in your country? That’s where we are now.” Ahmed, whose youngest daughter Zeinab, aged one and a half, has been diagnosed with anemia, says. He and his wife and two children fled Syria to Lebanon, where they live in a tent village on the outskirts of Arsal. ‘My daughter was very blue in the face and limp. The doctor prescribed iron supplements and told us to feed her more vegetables and beans as she would not be able to buy meat anymore. The price of everything has jumped at least four times. It’s only getting worse.”

This quote is from something I read in the news last year.

Hearing this, I decided to do a project here at the school to help Lebanon.

There are many problems at the moment in Lebanon, including a significant devaluation of the Lebanese pound, soaring inflation, widespread unemployment and severe shortages of essential supplies such as medicines, fuel and food.

Originally ranked 76th out of 113 countries in the Global Helping People Index and 40th (2017) with regard to charities, the economic crisis has seen the country drop to 115th (2022) out of 119 countries. (Japan was ranked 111th in 2017 and 118th in 2022, lower than Lebanon).

We want to alleviate this situation as much as possible and to do so the Lebanon Crowdfunding Project was born.

After seeing how, despite the numerous inconveniences and changes in the country, many people are still hopeful for change and remain in the country, we decided to organize a crowdfunding to support them.

Moreover,  the reason why we chose Lebanon was because they may be going to war with Israel and this is likely to further suffocate the citizens. In order to prevent the situation from getting any worse, we believe it is crucial for us to provide support right now.

Imagine this. Your country’s government is no longer viable, there has been a shortage of food, water, fuel, and electricity for years, and the police and fire departments are not functioning. Prices are only going up, yet annual incomes are going down and you never know when you might be laid off. Though you have been hopeful and waiting for help and improvements,  recently you hear that a war may be starting.

In such a situation if we can see even a glimmer of help in this situation, hope will be preserved.

I believe that this is the only thing we can do. Through this support, we would like to create an opportunity for people to think about what they can do to fight against war.

Social issues to be solved

Lebanon’s economy has been deteriorating for several years, but the crisis escalated in late 2019 when the government announced plans to impose new taxes, including a tax on messaging apps, to address the budget deficit. The announcement sparked protests and eventually led to the resignation of the government. Since then, the country has been unable to get a functioning government, further exacerbating the crisis.

The COVID-19 epidemic has also had a significant impact on the country’s economy, with confinements and restrictions further reducing economic activity and worsening unemployment. And in August, a massive explosion at the port of Beirut caused more than 6 000 people to be injured and hundreds of thousands to be left homeless by a huge blast.

According to the UN, more than half of Lebanon’s 6.8 million inhabitants live in poverty, a number that has almost doubled since a year ago. In a country with the highest proportion of refugees in the world as a percentage of the population, 89% of Syrian refugees are living in extreme poverty and are estimated to be living on less than 10,000 Lebanese pounds (£684) per person per day, leading to frequent protests and strikes in search of a solution to the economic and political crisis and increasing social unrest This has led to an increase in social unrest.

What we want to achieve with this project

As mentioned earlier, many people in Lebanon are currently without food and warmth. In order to break through this situation, I would like to donate 500,000 yen to a local NPO, Maan(https://www.instagram.com/maan.lb/), with 100,000 yen to be raised through a crowdfunding event at my school, and the remaining 400,000 yen to be raised through crowdfunding in Japan and abroad.

Risks and Challenges/リスク

One of the risks is that the workshops I hold at school may not raise as much money as I hope. There are a few other events happening on campus around the same time, and I think many students may not be motivated to come every week. To minimize this risk I have asked local citizens from our city to join us so we can encourage interaction between students from our school and students outside of our school through this campaign.

Lebanon, with all its charms, is currently facing a number of problems. But they are not insoluble.

We are making the most of the opportunity that the “Leadership” class offers to make this project a success.

We are trying to figure out what we can do to bring back and revitalize the culture of helping each other that used to exist in Lebanon, and to bring Lebanon as a whole back to what it used to be and make it thrive again.

I am a first year high school student at UWC ISAK, an international boarding school in Nagano, Japan.

I was selected as a Youth Ambassador for ASPIRE 2030(https://www.aspire2030.org/ambassadors), a project organized by UNESCO for a project I organize called Words of Impact. This is an activity that allows students to learn about social issues at the same time as they study the language. We were also featured on the website of an organization called Catalysing Research Institute (https://www.catalysingresearch.org/yuiko-tsuruno).

We are also a member of Glabel, an app development organization, and released an app on the App Store in January of this year. This app allows vegetarians and other food-restricted foreigners living in Japan to see what products they can eat, and we are still programming updates to the app.

I also run a group called ISAK ECHO with 4 other students, where we have conducted trash pickups in November and February. The group has been featured twice on the school’s official Instagram page, and plans to collaborate with local NPOs and other groups as a community activity in April.
