A phone update summons a young woman into a dream of antiquities, powerlessness, and night terrors.
“When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.” – Helen Keller
Hi Everyone,
Wow, what a year. I know everyone has had many emotional battles throughout, myself included. A few months ago, I found myself alone, quarantining for 14 days post travel. Sitting with my own thoughts seemed like the worst possible thing, but you know what? In retrospect, it was the thing I needed most.
After many sleepless nights, I downloaded a sleep app. But instead of sleeping, the story of MY SOUL TO TAKE began to materialize in my mind. I immediately jumped on my laptop and began writing my first short film.
Directing was never a part of my plan. Perhaps this was because it had never occurred to me as a possibility. Maybe it was because, deep in the back of my mind, I was telling myself I couldn’t do it.
I’ve been acting for 24 years but I’ve only started working with female directors in the last 6 years. All of these women have inspired me and opened my eyes. They encouraged me to step outside of my comfort zone. The thing is, you never truly step outside of your comfort zone until you push yourself through the fear.
I am beyond excited to put on the director’s hat and would love for you all to be a part of the process.
We have an incredible team of producers working on MY SOUL TO TAKE. Our shoot will be four days. For production, post production, and festival submissions, we have estimated our budget to be around $50,000. We’re doing everything we can to pull in favors, so we’ve made our goal flexible with everything we raise going on the screen. We will make this movie no matter what and we’d love for you to be a part of it!
All of my love and appreciation,
Laura Vandervoort
LOGLINE:
After a year filled with hopelessness, low self-esteem, and loneliness, Quinn begins her nightly routine as she gets ready for bed. A software update on her phone pops up and is accepted without a second thought. An update, which summons her into a dream world of antiquities and powerlessness.
SYNOPSIS:
Quinn (30’s) suffers from what many of us do: she has become accustomed to relying on technology for all of her needs. Her social life, her entertainment, and her validation. And it’s killing her.
When technology, societal pressures, and quick fixes collide, Quinn realizes all too late that she is no longer in the driver’s seat of her life.
Despite being an indie film, we have assembled an incredibly established team to bring this story to life. Our cast and crew are dedicated to creating a beautiful, visual, and dark film about one woman’s journey in her most vulnerable state of mind.
Starring Jenny Raven and Rainbow Sun Francks, MY SOUL TO TAKE will be directed by Laura Vandervoort and executive produced by Jessica Petelle. Kim Derko will be our DP and the film will be produced by Kevin Eade, Justin Dyck and Peter Mabrucco.
Laura and Jessica last worked together on AGE OF DYSPHORIA, a short film directed by Jessica which Laura executive produced, starred in, and developed. AGE OF DYSPHORIA is currently in the festival circuit and has already won 11 awards.
Your money will be helping every aspect of this film come to life!

Our short film is a message about the dangers of isolation, technology, depression, our ‘on-demand’ culture, societal pressures, addiction, and lost time. Our goal is to create a dialogue about the amount of access we allow strangers to have into our lives through technology and the dangers of becoming a sheep merely following the flock.
Thank you,
MY SOUL TO TAKE Cast & Crew
