Watch Chris Surette’s first impression of Shine!
“A marvel of efficient design, [Shine Turbine] is capable of generating 40 watts, and trumps water turbines, thermoelectric stoves, and even solar panels with a 13 watts-per-pound ratio.”
“[Shine puts] low-cost wind generation into the hands of thousands of people. It is easily packable. I love solutions that are ideally utilitarian, and this is one.”
“Shine operates in the same principle as the massive wind turbines, but on a much smaller scale. Not only it can readily power gadgets like phones, tablets, lights, and cameras, but it can also generate and store electricity quickly in various weather conditions.”
Access to renewable power off-grid is essential as electronics often require more charging power than portable batteries can provide. Without a reliable energy source, you can find yourself in vulnerable situations when your battery supply can’t be replenished.
Whether you’re camping, canoeing, RVing, hanging at a cottage, or looking to prepare for an emergency, the Shine Turbine provides renewable power day and night, rain, cloud, or shine.
Shine’s patent-pending technology instantly converts wind into power to charge a variety of devices or rapidly stores energy in its internal 12,000 mAh battery for later use.
Plug a USB cable into Shine to power devices while the turbine is in operation or stowed. Plug your phone into Shine while at basecamp, or pack Shine up and continue to power devices while the turbine is stowed in your pack.
This 40-watt ultra-compact wind charger can power any handheld USB device, including phones, tablets, lights, drones, cameras, GPS, speakers, e-readers, headphones, power banks, and more.
Never used a wind turbine? No problem!
WIND: Air flows over turbine body
YAW: Turbine automatically turns into the wind
ROTOR: Wind causes blades to spin
BATTERY: Turbine batteries charge when no device is connected
DEVICE: Electronics charge when USB cord is connected to the turbine
Shine creates energy faster than any other handheld renewable product. It is able to collect three phones’ worth of power in an hour at maximum rated wind speeds.
Shine is for anyone who wants to charge handheld devices while disconnected from the energy grid. The turbine is perfect for keeping electronics charged while backpacking, camping, RVing, fishing, hunting, remote working, and more.
Use a USB-A power cord to charge your devices while at home, at camp, or on the move!
HERE’S THE TIME IT TAKES SHINE TO PRODUCE THE POWER TO CHARGE POPULAR DEVICES
Shine’s high-efficiency blades and patent-pending technology allow it to rapidly create and store energy faster than any other handheld renewable energy product.
The table above shows the power Shine will generate between the lowest and highest wind speeds the turbine can operate in. Even at 8 mph, which is hardly any wind with leaves on trees slightly moving, Shine will create usable power to trickle charge its internal battery. The turbine will generate large amounts of power in high wind speeds, up to 28 mph, and rapidly fully charge its internal battery.

Exterior components
Internal components
The Shine Turbine team has been developing the product since 2018 and has overcome countless technical hurdles. These ranged from optimizing the pivot point to face Shine into the wind, to fitting everything needed to set up the turbine inside its internal compartment, to its patent-pending turbine design that provides portability without sacrificing efficiency!
SHINE GETS MORE POWER FROM NATURE
Shine’s major differentiator is its power generation efficiency. When it comes to generating high amounts of energy quickly, the wind wins! This is because the wind has a cubic relationship with power.
Shine (gold) vs. other portable renewable energy products (blue). Solar and hydropower only have a linear relationship with their respective resources. As solar intensity or water speeds double, their power outputs only double.
“An amazing thing about wind energy is that when the wind speed doubles, you can get eight times more power from a wind turbine. This is the cubic relationship of power to wind speed, which is why your Shine Turbine can charge things so fast on a windy day.”
– Wayne Groszko, Ph.D.
Applied Energy Research Scientist
The cubic output of wind, paired with Shine’s high-efficiency blades and lightweight design, allow the turbine to produce the most amount of energy for the least amount of weight compared to any other comparable portable renewable charger.
What does this mean? Your new portable turbine is more efficient than other comparable wind turbines, river turbines, solar panels, and battery packs on the market!
EVERYTHING NEEDED TO USE SHINE STOWS TO THE SIZE OF A WATER BOTTLE
Shine features an extremely compact design. The size of a water bottle, it can easily find a home in your pack’s side pouch. Everything needed to set up the turbine stores inside its internal compartment, and its blades fold onto its body to make it 100% self-contained.
The team behind Shine are all avid outdoor enthusiasts and have experienced the typical issues that come with portable solar chargers. At this size, solar panels are only about 5-10% efficient, especially if the sun is not directly above the panel. Meaning if there’s cloud, if it’s nighttime, or if there’s dust or dirt on the panel, very little power is going to be generated. Shine’s ability to provide energy at any time of day, in all different weather conditions, makes it a much more dependable source of power.
All Shine’s components store inside the turbine body for easy travel: Turbine body with blades, Mount Pegs, Guy wires

YOUR SHINE TEAM
The Shine Turbine wouldn’t be where it is today without the incredible support from our partners and research teams:
Risks and challenges
We believe that the majority of risks and challenges associated with getting your Shine Turbine to you are behind us, and here’s why:
- We’re nearly at the finish line! Shine is currently undergoing product certification and once this is complete we can start deliveries.
- We’ve started production beginning with the product’s mechanical sub-assemblies. This will give us the ability to promptly fulfill orders as soon as Shine passes certification.
- We’re manufacturing in-house in Atlantic Canada so we’ll be able to oversee the entire manufacturing process, ensure product quality, and immediately resolve any issues that arise.
That said, when producing anything new, unexpected things can happen. If they do, we promise to keep you in the know and to be fully transparent and honest about whatever comes our way.
The greatest risk to our project is the unexpected challenges the COVID-19 pandemic could present to our shipping timelines and supply chain. To help prevent disruptions, we’ve identified parts and suppliers that could be a risk and have worked to secure inventory ahead of time. We have also identified alternative suppliers who can fulfill new part order needs if necessary.
We have full confidence in our manufacturing process and have done extensive planning to set realistic expectations for meeting delivery timelines. Quality is our top priority. During production and fulfillment, if we identify anything that doesn’t meet our quality control standards, we’re going to let you know, and we’re going to fix it immediately.
We’re committed to delivering you a product that we’re proud of and you’re excited about!
Environmental commitments
Long-lasting design
Shine is made of incredibly durable metal, plastics, and electrical components to survive and thrive in the elements. The turbine has been designed to last at least 1,000 hours of operation, which for its application, is expected to last at least five years.
Reusability and recyclability
The Shine Turbine and its packaging have been designed with sustainability top of mind. Up to 85% of Shine’s parts are recyclable. For ease, we always recommend checking ahead to find out if your local recycling program will accept Shine.
Sustainable materials
Our packaging is plastic-free and 100% recyclable and biodegradable. The box Shine comes in is made of at least 85% of certified post-consumer recycled paper and its manuals are printed on 100% certified post-consumer recycled paper.
Environmentally friendly factories
Shine is manufactured locally in Nova Scotia, Canada. The Shine team’s motivation for production in North America was to oversee and refine the production process for the highest quality but to also reduce GHGs from having to ship Shine units from overseas.
Sustainable Distribution
Since Shine is being manufactured in Nova Scotia, Canada, the environmental impact of fulfilling and distributing the product across North America is much less than had it come from overseas. The Shine team has also selected couriers who have environmentally-friendly practices as a part of their operations.
Something else
The Shine team is sourcing the majority of its parts for the Shine Turbine locally within North America. This not only contributes to the quality of the design but, like the localized manufacturing, reduces overall GHG since the parts aren’t being shipped from overseas.
