Dermatologists recommend that a sunhat be a minimum of 3 inches/7.5 cm from the crown to the brim edge.
With the Fairway, I tried to find the “Sweet Spot” between comfort, style and protection. The brim is 7.5 cm/3 inches from crown to brim edge.
The original Shapeflexer was 8.9 cm/3.5 inches! Many complained that the extra large brim was too big and cumbersome (like wearing a sombrero).
In all Fairness, proper Mexican sombreros DO provide good shade, but they’re far from being convenient, comfortable, or good in the wind…
A quick recap on my earlier two crowdfunding projects.
1. The Shapeflexer Sunhat – after years of adventure travel and hiking, I was sick of never having a sunhat that lasted longer than a few months. What was firm and stylish in the store, ended up looking like a piece of crumpled trash in a matter of weeks or months. They were always useless in the wind and never packable OR machine washable. So, I invented my own. Bendable, shapeable, crushable, foldable, machine washable, waterproof SUPER wind resistant and PACKED with features like a zip off top and a deployable neck cape.
2. The Shapeflxer LITE- the biggest problem with the Shapeflexer was the weight. The outer brim was supported by multi-strand copper, which was robust, strong and bendable, but HEAVY. I made the LITE identical to the Classic Shapeflexer, but with a silicone coated bailing wire (replaceable) INSTEAD of the copper…

I tore everything down and started from square ONE with the Fairway…
(JUST as wind resistant as the Classic Shapelfexer, and 50% MORE wind resistant than the “Shapeflexer LITE!” while weighing 35% LESS than the LITE!)

The first two Shapeflexers WERE great hats, but a few people still thought them too big and bulky AND HEAVY…. (even the “Lite”! For golfers, tennis players and ultra light weight hikers, no dice) I knew I could do better. So during lockdown, I worked on a design that would be equally as robust and versatile as the Shapeflexers, but lighter and a BIT smaller. This hat was a tricky tightrope to walk! I wanted something less clunky and big (i.e. smaller) yet still big enough to provide adequate sun protection AND have a place for long hair to go AND have the deployable neck cape. Also MUCH LIGHTER, but still as strong in the wind and rain. I knew it’d be difficult, but possible.
After years of trial and error, I finally came up with the “Fairway”. It’s the best Shapeflexer sunhat yet! I take pride in it.
This level of portability, robustness and versatility is not available in any other sunhat! (including the first 2 shapeflexers)
A Sunhat for Everyone
Even though the name might make it sound like “Golf Hat”, it’s not specifically ONLY designed for golfers (though they were a key demographic I wanted the Fairway to appeal to).
With all the material being UPF 50+, it’s a hat for everyone who spends time outdoors.

If you’re heading into a windy situation, lock the chinstrap (which is stable and tight as a drum!)
If the air is calm, simply tighten the strap behind the stiff brim indefinitely.

Ponytail Gate (for long hair)
After receiving many complaints from male customers (about not ever needing the zip off top of the Shapeflexer etc.) I decided to do away with it.

It was difficult to find the right combination of robustness, bendability, brim thickness, brim width, and overall weight for the PERFECT SUNHAT mix. But I believe I succeeded!

SIZING
Measuring your head may be a new experience for some of you, but an accurate measurement will help you select the ideal size.
We recommend using a soft fabric measuring tape and measuring the thickest part of your skull while ensuring that the tape is kept horizontal to the ground, not at an angle.
Tin carpenter-style measuring tape is not ideal but will work…
You may be on the border between sizes, in which case you can choose based on whether you prefer a loose or snug fit. Generally, we recommend the bigger size and then tweaking the fit with the adjustable cord. But if a snug fit is what you seek, you could choose the smaller size.
Note: if on the border between sizes, it’s usually better to go larger, unless you like a snug-fitting hat
