Introducing a simpler, environmentally conscious solution

As well as being sleek and easy to use, UC01 also reduces unnecessary electronic waste. Its modular design means parts can be easily upgraded when power supplies change so there’s no need to buy additional products and discard old units.

The combined USB and power adapter is easy to use and works across the globe. It supplies 30W GaN charging options for a range of devices, along with dual port USB-A and USB-C charging for mobile devices such as ear pods and MacBook Air.

How to use

1. Rotate the wheel on the front of the plug to reveal the charging pins.
2. Twist until the wheel realigns with the unit to fully extend the pins. 
3. Adjust the angle of the pins for USA, Australia and China power sockets.

What makes the UC01 unique?

UC01 is designed to be different from existing products and deliver a number of significant benefits.

1. Improving usability and safety in a compact unit

Making a universal charger is challenging as it is difficult to meet the wide-ranging plug standards that exist around the world. The British plug size standard (BS 1363) and European plug size standard (EN50075) are often overlooked which means that products are often unable to work in large parts of the world.  Larger products can be awkward to use with standard sockets while smaller products can lead to safety issues with electrical parts being exposed. Measuring under 50 x 50 x 50mm, UC01 is the only product that combines such widespread compatibility with safety and usability.

2. Unique mechanisms

UC01 has unique mechanisms (patent pending) that are designed to make deploying and storing of each plug unit easier and safer. These are:

• Dual extruding mechanism
• Rotational extruding mechanism
• Auto-locking mechanism

3. Modular system enables easy upgrading 

Approximately every 3 years, the charging technology and protocol of USBs have been upgraded which means that charging products frequently become obsolete, leading to increased e-waste and unnecessary costs for consumers. The UC01 is designed with sustainability in mind. It has a modular element to enable easier upgrades for when technology changes. The end result is lower costs for customers and less waste for the planet.

Testing and certifications

We are undertaking product testing and certifications to ensure that it meets the very highest quality standards. We submitted the initial technical dossier to obtain CE, FCC certified and RoHs compliant. Safety certifications will start early next year when our test production model comes out. We will keep you updated on progress here.

Shipment, VAT, and Tax

Shipping cost and taxes are not included in the price for what you are pledging. Shipping rates are very volatile now due to the global post pandemic so we cannot generate an exact shipping fee. We decided to collect shipping fees and taxes through the post-campaign survey to whatever it takes to minimize the impact to our backers. The survey will be emailed to you after the project ends successfully. Based on how many UC01 you buy and where you live, fees and taxes will be calculated after you take the survey. We are looking for an economical but reliable shipping solution and we are trying to target around ~$20.

About me

I am a traveller and an engineer/designer. The tools of my trade are a mobile phone, an iPad, and a laptop that go everywhere with me.

I need my devices and my peripherals to be powered up when travelling or working abroad but each time I started packing, I realised that chargers and travel adapters were causing me anxiety. Did I have the right adapter? Would it fit the power socket? Would charging damage my tech? The only answer seemed to be researching power supplies in different countries then buying new adapters each time I travelled.

There had to be a better option – one that not only solved these challenges but could also reduce electronic waste through modular elements.

The result – after 2 years of design, testing and refining – is the UC01. The designer in me is pleased with the way the unit looks and operates simply while the engineer in me is satisfied that it works in over 200 countries and is able to accommodate future charging options.

We are just putting the final touches to the UC01 and I’m looking forward to helping to ease charging anxiety for travellers everywhere.

Risks and challenges

Certification & Testing

Prototypes seen in the campaign are pre-production units. We already started mass production moulding tooling right before the Indiegogo campaign launched. In order to satisfy our quality standard and receive a safety certification, the product must undergo rigorous testing and the process may be delayed if we need to modify it during this period.

Supply Chain

We are working with trusted manufacturing partners, who we have worked with successfully in the past. One of our co-founders will be onsite during the first production run to ensure everything runs smoothly. Unfortunately, international shipping remains volatile and our main challenge will be shipping this project within our anticipated target timeframe. Also, we anticipate there may be additional delays in component procurement due to the pandemic.

IP infringement / IP protection

Currently, UC01 is patent pending. Once granted, this will give us legal recourse to defend the product copyright. If there are any delays to the patent being granted, we will keep you informed through updates on this page.

Environmental commitments

Long-lasting design

We designed our product to be used with pleasure and pride. Our products go through rigorous testing and a quality inspection process prior to shipping and each product comes with a 1 year warranty. We’re committed to producing high quality products that stand the test of time.

Environmentally friendly packages

Where possible, we will use recycled materials in the product and packaging. The packaging will be made from cardboard to minimize plastic waste while the unit itself has been designed to reduce distribution costs and minimise packaging.
