The first 100% employee-owned, majority-BIPOC, women-and nonbinary-led abortion care provider group

Story

Valley Abortion Group is the passion project of the late Dr. Carmen Landau

Dr. Landau died suddenly and unexpectedly on October 14, 2022, while in the early stages of launching Valley Abortion Group. Her collaborators and colleagues are committed to seeing Dr. Landau’s vision through to completion, in honor of our beloved friend.

Dr. Landau was a pioneer of survivor-centered care, a world-renowned expert in abortion care later in pregnancy, and a passionate advocate for justice. Our grief over the loss of such a visionary leader strengthens our resolve to bring her beautiful dream to fruition.

A New Vision for Abortion Care

Valley Abortion Group will be the first 100% employee-owned, majority-BIPOC, women- and nonbinary-led abortion care facility in the US.

We are a group of practitioners who are local to New Mexico, who have worked as a team for years. We provide expert, compassionate abortion care at all gestational ages. We use a trauma-informed model of care that honors and embraces the diversity of New Mexico’s cultures and communities.

Justice for our patients, Justice for our staff, Justice for our community

We aren’t just providing a needed service, we are also providing an amazing team with the work environment and support they deserve. Our business structure creates a new model that is intentionally designed to mirror the equity and respect that we provide to our patients.

Few free-standing abortion clinics are owned by people of color. Because we are an employee-led group, the people doing the work on the ground are the same ones making important decisions about patient care, practice culture, and financial sustainability.

Hiring and promoting will be done with a deep commitment to a justice-based transformation of leadership. When partnering with companies and organizations, VAG will invest in our local community, in BIPOC partners, and in our wider abortion and reproductive justice community.

Now is the moment for a new model of abortion care

Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade has cemented a grim era of restrictive abortion laws, we have been caring for a huge influx of patients traveling to New Mexico from out of state. The strain on our system is causing delays in care for everyone, including New Mexico residents. Patients seeking abortion care in Albuquerque are facing an average wait time of 4-5 weeks before they can secure an appointment.

Many new providers have come from out of state as well, focused on caring for patients from out of state. VAG will maintain our commitment to our New Mexico community by accepting local insurances, including medicaid, and working with local organizations to increase access for patients from rural and tribal areas.
