Every parent can relate to the weekday ritual; getting our kids fed, focused and laden like pack mules. Helping them gear up and get out the door is nerve-wracking on a good day…but there is always the proverbial straw.

For us, that straw came in the form of a music stand. Our kids had become experts at juggling it all; rucksacks, PE kits, instruments, music bags – and music stands. Seriously, it was always the stands that wouldn’t fit. These bulky, awkward creatures would poke, prod, and scratch, creating a domino effect. Normal morning mayhem quickly descended into a petulant, “I hate music practise anyway!” As parents and as lifelong musicians, we didn’t want anything to get in the way of our childrens’ joy in playing music.

We decided to do something about it – to help our kids manage their stuff – and to make playing music be more, well, playful. We designed the world’s lightest, most versatile, ultra-portable music stand, that can be tucked right into a rucksack, music bag, or even a pocket without causing any damage or tears of frustration. Of course, the perfect stand has to perform – quick & easy setup, no sharp edges, fully adjustable, and strong enough to hold your heaviest songbooks. While our music stand is incredibly durable, it’s still lightweight and compact enough to be taken with you wherever you go. Weighing in at about 550g, the materials we’ve chosen have the highest possible strength-to-weight ratio, for a perfect harmony of durability and convenience. It not only folds flat to neatly fit into any backpack or pocket, but it also comes standard with small locks to keep its panels and legs secure while you’re on the move.

Safe and Secure

Wee Stand’s sheet-saver tabs and swivel clips are unique features that allow you to keep your pages secure while you are playing. No more readjusting or chasing after loose pages! The rounded edges of our lightweight music stand ensure that you won’t damage or scratch your precious instrument. As an added measure of safety, we’ve included a comfortable wrist loop that’s perfect for windy conditions.

 What We’ve Done So Far 

We have built prototypes, tested extensively, built more prototypes, and tested yet again until we got every detail just right. We have started our small-scale production with a limited manufacturing run. This means we are tooled and ready for mass production!

Risks and challenges

Manufacturing: We have worked with our manufacturing partner on other projects. With any new innovative product there is always the potential for unforeseen issues to pop up. We feel confident that we have addressed most of these in our development process but will be keeping an eye out. One factor we are watching is the commodity price of raw material. This has been increasing over the last couple of months. We won’t be passing this price increase on to our backers but it is something we are monitoring. Shipping has been crazy over the last year with the pandemic backups, Brexit, container shortages and right at this moment a massive container ship blocking the Suez Canal. This is probably the area that we have least control over and which may have most impact on the arrival of your shiny new Wee Stand. We are in conversations with a couple of different importers and working to ensure as smooth a shipping experience as possible with our intent to ship individual packages to North America from a warehouse in North America and similarly for Europe.

Long-lasting design

Our post-consumer plastic and carbon fibre legs are durable and long-lasting. Portable music stands are typically short-lived; Wee Stand will be more of an investment that will significantly outlast other stands.

Reusability and recyclability

Wee Stand ships in a keepsake box that is designed to be used, not thrown away.

Sustainable materials

Wee Stand media plates are made from glass-infused post-consumer plastic. Our legs and hinges are made from long-lasting carbon fibre and stainless steel.

Environmentally friendly factories

We question our potential suppliers about: Environmental management practices: Do they use a certified environmental management system (EMS) such as ISO 14001 to assess their own environmental impacts, monitor their environmental impact and performance, maintain legal compliance and gain senior management commitment? Compliance with environmental legislation: We check our supplier has not been prosecuted for breaking the law. Our product’s environmental impact: We ask about our product resource use. What waste is created during its manufacture? Whether its production uses hazardous substances How much packaging it uses? The supplier’s buying practices: Do they have any procedures in place to identify environmental and social risks further down their supply chain? Social responsibility policy and practices: Whether the supplier identifies and assesses their own social risks and those of their supply chain? Whether the supplier monitors compliance with International Labour Organisation standards in their supply chains?

Sustainable Distribution

We plan on minimising individual shipping where possible and will break shipping down by region. To do that we will set up 2-3 geographical distribution areas including, North America, Europe and Rest of World. This will allow us to reduce the distance that any individual stand is being shipped.
