A theatrical project dedicated to exploring and connecting the characters from Sarah Kane’s plays.

Story

Hi Everyone!

I am happy to share my directorial debut with you—a unique theatrical project titled “Who is Sarah Kane?” With some reputable film and TV credits to my name, I am stepping back into the world of theatre as a director for the first time. My passion for Sarah Kane’s work began after I had the pleasure of performing in her play “Crave” twice. These experiences profoundly impacted me, and through a deep study in rehearsal, I became motivated to explore all her plays from a director’s point of view.

Phaedra’s Love” will be my company, Sooner Or Lady’s debut theatre production, and it will explore the intricate themes and relationships woven by the brilliant playwright Sarah Kane. We have secured the rights to the show, in addition to two venues, the ACUD Theatre in Berlin Mitte and the Altes Krematorium in Zurich, and we need your support to bring this vision to life.

Project Description

“Who is Sarah Kane?” is a theatrical project dedicated to exploring and connecting the characters from Sarah Kane’s plays, emphasizing the recurring themes and relationships that define her work. Our first production focuses on “Phaedra’s Love,” a play that blends elements of Greek mythology, influenced by Seneca’s Phaedra, and Kane’s unique interpretation as a “comedy.”

As a black queer director living in Berlin, I am passionate about creating spaces for diverse voices, particularly BIPOC directors. This project is an opportunity to cultivate an awareness of intersectionality and empower marginalized voices in the German and Swiss theatre scenes. Our goal is to provide a safe space for actors to learn and express a unique worldview influenced by my cultural background, exploring the power of myths and archetypes throughout the rehearsal process.

Artistic Vision

Our production aims to captivate theatre-goers who appreciate powerful and thought-provoking performances. We will integrate movement, voice, puppetry, and innovative stage design to create a memorable and immersive experience. Using the tools and exercises from Jane Drake Brody’s “Acting, Archetype, & Neuroscience: Superscenes for Rehearsal and Performance,” we will explore character and performance in a deeply impactful way through archetypes and myth.

Having been introduced to this method during my acting studies at university, and working closely with Jane Drake Brody herself, I am eager to apply these techniques to “Phaedra’s Love” for my directorial debut. The rehearsal phase will span two months, culminating in a performance at the ACUD Theatre in Berlin Mitte in November 2024, followed by performances in Zurich, and an extended run in Berlin upon return.
