Foreign fighters, fractured identities—a documentary showing war’s chaos, purpose, and the cost.

Story

I’m Ashley Matkowsky, an independent filmmaker who traveled to Ukraine at the start of the war, not just to document the conflict but to uncover my own Slavic roots. Why We Went is an immersive documentary following foreign volunteers who left their lives behind to fight in Ukraine. Shot on Super 8, digital, GoPro, and iPhone, this film captures the raw reality of war, the fractured identities of its fighters, and the search for meaning in chaos. Your support will help bring this story to the world, giving a voice to those who risked everything.

We’re raising funds to complete post-production, including:
Editing & Sound Design – Crafting a powerful, immersive experience
Color Grading & Super 8 Transfers – Preserving the raw truth of the footage
Music & Sound Mixing – Enhancing the emotional depth of the film
Festival & Distribution Costs – Ensuring this story reaches audiences worldwide

Your contribution, no matter the size, pushes this project forward. As a thank you, we’re offering:
– Exclusive Behind-the-Scenes Footage – Get an insider look at the making of the film
– Own a piece of the film – Original prints of the frontlines signed by the director
– Be A Part of History – Have your name in the credits of the film

Why We Went is more than a war documentary—it’s an unfiltered, human story about sacrifice, identity, and resilience. By supporting this film, you help:
Raise Awareness – Show the world the untold stories of those who answered Ukraine’s call
Push the Boundaries of Documentary Filmmaking – This film challenges traditional war narratives with an innovative, immersive style
Spark Global Conversations – On war, identity, and what it means to fight for something greater than yourself

This is a film that needs to be seen—and with your help, it will be.

Risks & Challenges

Filming a war is unpredictable. Many of the people in this documentary did not survive, and the fight is ongoing, making this project even more urgent. The biggest challenges now are:

Securing Final Funding – Without it, the film risks delays in editing and distribution

Ethical Storytelling – Honoring the lives of those in the film while avoiding sensationalism

Visibility – As an independent filmmaker, gaining visibility in major festivals and securing distribution is a challenge

With my years of experience in cinema production, my personal stake in this story, and a strong network of mentors and collaborators, I am committed to overcoming these obstacles.
