A slice-of-life legacy tabletop role-playing game about a found family and their magical home.
Our story begins in a sprawling old house outside time and space, where it’s always September 15th and there’s always room for a new visitor. A teen girl sits on the windowsill, reading a well-worn paperback and listening to the splashy-crashy rain come down. She’s alone in the world, but soon enough the strangers who reside here will become her closest friends, family, and mentors.
This book is the door into a world of heartless witches and devil children, of cursed frog knights and rabbits who wear little outfits, of aspiring rockstars and spaceships carjacked from the Moon Queen’s palace. We might cook up a breakfast banquet, go trick-or-treating under a sallow moon, put on a disastrous play, or catch fireflies under the stars. So stay the night, unpack your bags, and get ready to explore the world’s most magical Bed & Breakfast!
If you love slice-of-life fantasy, queer found family, and cutting-edge game mechanics, then read on!
Yazeba’s Bed & Breakfast is many things. It’s a bed and breakfast, of course, but it’s also this book. And this book is a book, of course, but it’s also a role-playing game—the sort of game we can play with our friends around a table, or on a voice call while hanging out, or even very, very slowly by mail.
Yazeba’s Bed & Breakfast is played over the course of 48 chapters, each of which is a 1 to 2-hour scenario with its own unique but quick-to-learn rules. Players can take control of one of the 7 long-term residents of the B&B or choose from a cast of 50 quirky guests, each of whom has their own ongoing storylines.
The adventures contained within each chapter include lazy afternoons, frightful nights, insurmountable chores, and zany competitions, so every play session is full of surprises. There are bespoke game rules for overcoming mountains of laundry, picking berries, surviving a trip to the scary basement, naming constellations, and everything else that matters in a slice-of-life story. These mechanics are simple and modular, meaning you only need to know the rules for the chapter in front of you. It can take as little as 15 minutes to start playing.
(Check out the Free Playkit here!)
After each chapter, we’ll be able to make changes to our characters and to the book—unlocking new guests and chapters and advancing the individual storylines of each character who played. Whether they’ve traded their heart away for magic powers or are just doing the everyday business of growing up, everything about a character can change through play, including their core identities. Over time, your copy of Yazeba’s Bed & Breakfast will become a unique artifact of your group’s play experience, a treasure that you can revisit and replay for decades.
Yazeba’s unusual blend of premade characters, modular rules, and legacy mechanics makes it a perfect game for pick-up play: busy players can drop in and out without ever feeling lost, and anyone who wants to jump in can make a long-term impact without a long-term commitment. We’ve spent months playtesting and working with our developmental consultant Avery Alder to make sure the game is as easy as possible for new players to step into, while still offering incredible depth for the more experienced player.
We’re also working with One More Multiverse to create a full digital companion to Yazeba’s Bed & Breakfast, a unique virtual tabletop experience allowing you to play sessions with your friends anywhere in the world.
There are six residents in the core game of Yazeba’s Bed & Breakfast (with a seventh unlocked later in the game), who are our main characters. Let’s meet them:
In addition to the main residents, there are also 50 guests, characters who rotate in and out of the Bed & Breakfast as we play. They include (but are by no means limited to) an evil skeleton who wants to end the world, a headless biker butch, a family of mudpuppy tourists, and a sentient apartment building. Have you ever wanted to play as a baby mushroom, the Stag of the Great Hunt, or an entire Lilliputian circus? Welcome to Yazeba’s! Want to befriend a gamer grrl harpy, the grandfather of modern robotics, or the creepy child who haunts that one VHS tape? They’re all waiting to meet you.
If you want to see what Yazeba’s Bed & Breakfast looks like in action, you can join award-winning podcast host Jeff Stormer as he plays a selection of chapters with an incredible roster of guest stars, including Brennan Lee Mulligan, Danny Quach, Matthew Mercer, Spencer Sunboy, Michelle Nguyen-Bradley, and many others.

A more in-depth discussion of this partnership can be found here. The digital edition is included for everyone who backs at the Kid Tier or higher.

“What you now behold is more than merely a book: It is a spell, a true working of magic on the world, carefully woven by Possum Creek Games to bewitch the reader and transport them to a place both familiar and yet beyond imagination. Yazeba’s does the impossible, uniting multiple incredible and unique play experiences under the same roof of shared storytelling, such that you will fall in love with this incredible work over and over again, all while never leaving hearth and home.”
— Brennan Lee Mulligan, Dimension 20
“Playful, curious and is very easy to pick up!”
— Banana Chan, Game Designer and Publisher
“Yazeba’s Bed & Breakfast is a rare thing, both because there’s nothing quite like it that I’ve seen, and because it is a shining example of how the creators weave a fresh approach into the beauty and intricacy of everything they create. I have full confidence that this game is going to become a touchstone of the art form as a whole.”
— Jeeyon Shim, A Field Guide To Memory
“Yazeba’s Bed & Breakfast is such a delightful, whimsical game that rapidly entices you and your fellow players to craft a memorable story. Quick to pick up, and deep to delve into, I couldn’t help but be enchanted.”
— Matthew Mercer, Critical Role
“On its surface, Yazeba’s Bed & Breakfast is telling slice-of-life stories about lovable rascals and their peculiar eccentricities. That’s already beautiful. But what I love most about Yazeba’s is the other story it tells, the secret one that only emerges over time: the story of what the world would be like, if a place that couldn’t possibly exist started existing, and the people who needed it most always managed to find it.”
— Avery Alder, Monsterhearts and The Quiet Year
“[Yazeba’s Bed & Breakfast is] the sort of game that can offer you the things you bring to it— things you may not even be aware you are carrying. It can be sweet and hopeful while it challenges you. Not a warm blanket to comfort, but rather a jacket that can hold back the deadliest part of a chill while still letting you feel that you are alive.”
— James D’Amato, The Oneshot Network
“…[Yazeba’s Bed & Breakfast] is a game that fundamentally expresses not only the innate differences in people but that recognizes the importance of community. It’s really clever. Also I like the frog.”
— Grant Howitt, Heart: The City Beneath and Honey Heist
Special thanks to Eaves Mendes, who helped come up with the original ideas this game was based on.

The text of Yazeba’s Bed & Breakfast is completely finished. After the campaign will be a period of editing and layout, followed by printing. However, this is a large operation spanning multiple continents in the midst of a global pandemic and a lot of cultural uncertainty. We have a lot of experience—both with fulfilling large projects and navigating the social upheaval surrounding the past 2 years. We’ve dedicated additional space in our timeline for any hiccups around production, manufacturing, or distribution. However, our priority is always for the health and safety of our team, which means we consider delays an acceptable cost to avoid overwork and burnout from anyone on the project. We will keep you informed and be very upfront throughout the process, and have given ourselves a significant amount of lead time to make sure we can release Yazeba’s Bed & Breakfast on schedule without sacrificing product quality or the well-being of our team.
