Japanese craftsmanship has always been well respected in the handcrafted leather industry especially with the craft of hemming and stitching. This is because it is their way of life as they commit themselves as artisans and continuously improve on their crafting skills.

Belt Kurenai and Siru involves the edge sealing process.

Leather edge sealing refers to the process of creating a sealed smooth edge along the exposed seams. Several steps include sanding, coating, burnishing and finally, buffing. These procedures will be repeated until the edge appears smooth and delicate.

It is the attention to details which the Japanese craftsmen pride themselves on. Their handmade products, especially, are well sought after as the consumers know for a fact that a certain standard will be delivered through the heart and soul of the artisan. Therefore, from the craftsman’s skills, it can be said that a kind of unspeakable “life” is produced by the interaction between craftsman and material when making objects. Leading some to believe that hand-made objects in Japan, in addition to their form and function, are believed to have a “soul”.

In Japanese craftsmanship, they believe that through repeated polishing, it brings life into the product. This is something that cannot be replaced with machine processes. Wax is manually applied repeatedly to seal the edges of the leather strap. Not only will it create a polished look of the leather, it prolongs the life of the strap as well. As compared to applying glue, wax will not only reduce the chance of the leather splitting sooner, but it also protects the leather by creating a layer over it.

The colour of the leather will change over time due to interaction with the environment and body oil, giving it a personalised and unique touch. However, with the layers of wax skillfully applied over the leather, the core material will not be damaged. Sharing the same concept of Wabi-Sabi, as with the bronze case that we provide.

We provide the sewing and bulging for both belt Kurenai and belt Siru.

In addition, the saddle-stitching method will be used. It involves sewing with needles and threads which creates two rows of stitching in one single row of holes, and this process can only be achieved through skilled craftsmanship.

By adopting this method of handmade stitching instead of machine stitching, it ensures that the leather strap can last much longer as two independent threads are being used. If a thread breaks, the saddle stitch will still hold the leather together.

As for belt Kurenai and belt Siru, the suture of the strap is being hand sewn using Japanese hemp thread and finally sealing it off with beeswax. By doing so, the stitching sections are independent of each other, causing no overlaps thus ensuring a cleaner look while protecting the core of the strap.

Thicker leather and added materials will be used to fill the centre of the strap, giving it a three-dimensional look, enhancing its aesthetics, and most importantly making it more comfortable on the user.

there are 2 Tochigi Leather straps to choose from.

kurenai: Lightweight design fit for daily wear

Siru:hypoallergenic leather strap for sensitive skin.

You have an option to engrave on the Tochigi leather strap and on the case back of the watch.

We genuinely want the watch to accompany you through your adventures whilst capturing the changes of ages and your fond memories.

The bronze and Tochigi leather, therefore, is adopted.

Bronze acquires a stable oxidized layer that protects its structural integrity and hardness and gives it a unique look, patina, as the years go by. It is this stability that made bronze so appealing, and why it was favoured on our dive watch H1 and the like.

The Tochigi leather further encapsulates our stance of quality and pursuit of aesthetics. Being made solely from natural vegetable tannin, the Tochigi leather takes three months to be produced. When the highest quality leather sits on your wrist, you will immediately notice a high level of comfort and elasticity that come from generations of workmanship. With frequent wear, the leather will be softer and be “moulded” to the shape of your wrist.

As with the bronze case, the texture and tone of the leather changes over time, developing a sense of age unique to any individual.

Our ideals align with the Japanese quote ‘WABI-SABI’.

It means to appreciate the ‘Inner-Beauty’ of changes and we strongly believe that the H1 will hold greater meaning and appreciation to you.

With years of exposure in the supply chain for watches and timepieces, we have developed a high level of trust with the production and material suppliers line. With this relationship, we are able to secure preferential production scheduling and premium materials at a reasonable price.

As this will be the first product really belonged to us to be launched, we will be giving an early-bird special for adopters during our crowdfunding stage. You will be able to get your H1 at our cost price.

We named our first watch “H1” as a tribute to John Harrison, one of BBC’s top 100 most influential people in the United Kingdom.

It took Harrison nearly 50 years to continuously perfect his invention and solved one of the greatest technological challenges of his time, to accurately calculate the longitude while at sea. As Dava Sobel, his biographer rightly puts it “he accomplished what Newton had feared was impossible: he invented a clock that would carry the true time from the home port, like an eternal flame, to any remote corner of the world.”

The design engraved on the back case of our watch is in fact the prototype of “H1”. It is the most representative work of navigation clock. Not only did it have the most accurate performance of its time, it is also representative of unremitting research, which greatly promoted the pursuit of watch making technology in that era and lifted the industry’s standard. It has withstood the test of time and is undoubtedly consistent with our pursuit of the inner ultimate perfection(下を律儀に).
