A TRUELY UNIQUE MATERIAL 

In Germany alone, more than 20 million tons of coffee grounds are collected every year. It would be a shame if they went to waste! Luckily, there are companies like Kaffeeform. Also from Berlin, this young and innovative firm uses a complex upcycling process to turn coffee grounds into a material that is traceable, that is eco-friendly, and that tells a story.

The coffee grounds are collected by bicycle couriers from cafés across Berlin, then dried in community workshops and prepared for further processing. The material is made entirely of 100% plant-based ingredients and contains no harmful chemicals. What’s more, it’s not only durable and robust, but also fully recyclable. 

The material gives off a subtle coffee aroma and also its distinct color and texture convey the unmistakable look and feel of coffee. The final result is slightly different for each watch case, creating a true one-of-a-kind watch.

THE DESIGN: ONE-OF-A-KIND

Coffee is a unique material for a one-of-a-kind watch. Due to the nature of the grounds, The beloved beverage is celebrated in the design of the watch by way of subtle details: depending on the angle, you can make out the shapes of charming coffee cups and beans. We cleverly recessed the crown into the case back to provide for a closed, round, and minimalist look.

We designed the watch to be casual and a bit understated by incorporating a minimal Bauhaus style dial complete with a subtle sun-burst effect and thinned hour and minute hands. The core is made of stainless steel so you can rest assured that the watch will last for many years to come. Finally, in order for the Coffee Watch to properly display the time at all times, we incorporated a reliable and super precise quartz movement from the Swiss manufacturer Ronda.

DESIGNED BY AWARD-WINNING EXPERTS

Having an exciting material at your disposal is one thing. Creating an exciting watch is another. But our multi-award winning team of designers was up for the challenge! Initial sketches became concrete ideas; we browsed countless patterns, built prototypes, carried out tests and analyses, and continually made improvements to the details. Luckily, our designers never ran out off coffee! After more than three years of development, the Coffee Watch now is what we had always envisioned!

CHOOSE YOUR DESIGN

Like coffee itself, the Coffee Watch is available in different types. The dial comes in two versions: a minimalist version with fine engravings, and a more classic version with typical Lilienthal Berlin numerals. As for the color, you can choose between black and silver.

You can choose between straps made from vegetable-tanned organic leather and vegan cellulose-based leather in coffee tones as well as two mesh straps made of interwoven stainless steel in the colors of the dials. All the straps are extremely robust and comfortable to wear, and come with a quick-release mechanism for mixing and matching!

The Coffee Watch has been our most challenging project to date. After all, we were dealing with a completely new material. Three years ago, we discovered a to-go cup made from coffee. Fascinated by the material, we decided it would be cool to use it to make one of our new watches. As luck would have it, Kaffeeform, the company that made the sustainable material, was located right around the corner from our office. It didn’t take long for us to set up a meeting with Julian, the founder of Kaffeeform, and toss around some initial ideas. The chemistry was right and we quickly agreed to tackle the project together! Julian offered helpful suggestions each step of the way, from the very first sketches to the final prototypes. Without him, our Coffee Watch project would never have passed the idea stage. But now, our idea is becoming a reality!
