Concept

A bookstore in a small town that desperately needs one. Books, coffee, local art, ephemera and more.

Story

I have had a lifelong dream of owning a bookstore with a coffee shop in it (or a coffee shop with a bookstore in it). I have worked in both, and have a burning desire to own a business that means something to me and the community. My hometown has few options for entertainment or enrichment. We no longer have a movie theater or a bookstore, and we have limited local shopping.

In conjunction with new and used books, I want to offer a small selection of local art, coffee, soft drinks, and snacks (locally made), ephemera (prints, posters, postcards), stamps (the post office is not in the downtown area), a small selection of mailing supplies and wrapping paper, journals, pens, an e-book store, a small selection of gifts, and a comfortable welcoming atmosphere for all. And of course – FREE WI-FI!  Community events to include game nights, book clubs, knitting nights, story hour, readings and signings with local authors – the options are wide open!

Annual events are in place to support foot traffic in spring and winter with summer and fall events in the works. Businesses already on or near the square within walking distance include a computer store, a salon, a barber shop, two restaurants, clothing stores, a jeweler, a drug store, a family owned hardware store, ice cream/treat store, formal wear, art/craft studio, court house, city hall, elementary school, insurance and accounting services, two attorneys, a medical clinic, tanning salon, police department.

We will have weekend and evening hours if traffic supports it. COFFEE ALL DAY AND NIGHT.

What we need to do:

  • Purchase a building. I have one in mind. It’s a deal and it’s right on the square! I’ve been eyeballing the building for a couple of years now.
  • Get the utilities and other services in place.
  • Get our legal and permit/licensing requirements out of the way. This will include ServSafe, EIN, sales tax, city permits.
  • Order equipment, fixtures, furniture and stock. I may be able to get shelving from a local woodworker.
  • OPEN!
