Four heavy steel pieces interlock to create a modern masterpiece of mechanical puzzles.

Story

We’re Craighill and Art of Play. Two curious companies, one shared obsession: creating beautiful objects that evoke wonder. To preorder the Wavelinks Puzzle and bring it to life, click Back This Project. Or scroll on for more details.

What’s so cool about the Wavelinks Puzzle? Where to begin…

The first thing you’ll notice is the beautiful form – this is an eye-catching object.

Upon picking it up, you’ll be struck by the surprising weight. Hot dog, this thing is heavy!

Next, you’ll be pulled into the mysterious challenge of discovering how it works. Whether you’re assembling it or taking it apart, it’s delightfully surprising. The Wavelinks moves in a way that’s unlike anything you’ve experienced before.

Finally, once you’ve cracked the code,  a sense of unvarnished satisfaction will wash over you. You’ve reached the mountaintop!

Even after you’ve unlocked the secret, the magic continues. The Wavelinks is an amazing puzzle to share with curious friends. You can blow their minds, help them through moments of frustration, and guide them into the inner sanctum of mastery and knowledge.

When guests come to visit your home or office, they’ll be surprised to discover you’ve begun collecting meaningful works of sculpture. Get ready for the compliments.

Composed of four identically shaped pieces of stainless steel, the Wavelinks Puzzle’s components fit together to form two interlocking tori (aka donuts ? – yum!).

The Wavelinks Puzzle is available in two different finishes: Stainless Steel + Vapor Black or Iridescent.

For the Stainless + Black version, we apply an ultra-durable matte black PVD coating to two pieces of each puzzle.

The contrast of the stainless steel and matte black highlights the beauty of the wave-like seam, and allows for two different assembly configurations.

To celebrate the launch of the campaign and reward early backers, we’re also offering a small number of Iridescent Wavelinks Puzzles. This finish is pretty fantastic – it’s also super-durable PVD, and the color shifts from purple to green as the light hits at different angles.

The Wavelinks Puzzle was designed by Rod Bogart in 2017. While most great puzzles are built on mechanisms from previous designs, the engineering and motion of the Wavelinks is truly innovative.

Since its initial design, no one has ever been able to figure out how to manufacture it in metal…until now.

The team from Art of Play are some of the world’s foremost authorities on magical objects. They’ve been transfixed by the Wavelinks Puzzle since first encountering it in 2019, and they’ve always envisioned it in metal.

They knew if anyone could execute this crazy object in premium materials, it was the team at Craighill, having already designed and launched four other similarly-complex mechanical puzzles.

The Wavelinks Puzzle is an object unlike any other we’ve ever experienced. It’s the most complex manufacturing challenge we’ve ever faced, but we were determined to bring it to life, no matter the expense.

When it came to manufacturing, we knew right away that we had the perfect production partner. Together we’ve spent years finding innovative ways to produce extremely complex forms in metal. We utilized the process of ceramic shell casting, which allows for the precise execution of intricate shapes.

“I am thrilled to see the new Wavelinks puzzle fully realized in high quality stainless steel. Folks are sure to appreciate how well-made it is.” – Rod Bogart, Wavelinks Puzzle designer

The Wavelinks Puzzle is the latest addition to a growing family of puzzles: Jack, Venn, Tycho, and Tetra. Backers of the Wavelinks campaign will have access to all of our previous puzzles for special reduced pricing.

Craighill is a design and manufacturing brand rooted in curiosity, ingenuity, and pleasure.

Art of Play is a modern wonder emporium, a place to discover magic.

We joined forces out of a mutual love of extremely cool, fun, challenging, beautiful puzzles.

For Craighill, this is our fourth Kickstarter campaign in five years. We launch products here because it allows us to develop the types of designs we’re passionate about, even if they don’t fit neatly into conventional categories.

The success we’ve found with this community has encouraged us to continue to experiment and take risks. And so we keep moving forward on our strange, wonderful path, confident that there are other curious, like-minded people out there — people with a similar passion for beautiful, intriguing, well-made things.

We’ve been so lucky to build our business the way we want. We don’t have to answer to investors or make uncomfortable compromises. We’re accountable only to ourselves, each other, and our amazing customers (that’s you).

Thank you for allowing this journey to continue. We hope you have as much fun experiencing these objects as we do creating them.
