Share the wonderful Japanese woodworking!
Online Japanese woodworking classroom, learn in english
We will deliver Japanese woodworking videos that you can learn in English!
There are many videos online that one can learn about Japanese woodworking. However, most of them are in Japanese. If you don’t understand the language, then you won’t be able to understand the content. In addition, communication with the teacher and any Q&A become very difficult. Because of this language barrier, I know that there are many people from around the world who have given up on learning Japanese woodworking. It’s a pity to lose the motivation to learn just because you don’t understand Japanese!
So I came up with this idea. I wanted to make available woodworking lesson videos in which non-Japanese speakers can understand. This way, I can share with you the essence of Japanese woodworking. You can acquire important knowledge and skills such as how to use Japanese hand tools, and the adjustment of the tools and so on.
Why video?
In 2020, due to COVID19 – a rare global pandemic which is said to occur once every 100 years – we weren’t able to share woodworking face-to-face. Therefore, I would like to distribute videos of our actual one-month Japanese woodworking course that was held in Kyoto.

Â
Takami Kawai a traditional Japanese carpenter and an architect with 20 years of experience in sustainable design and construction. I am confident in creating an ideal living space that is in harmony with nature. I love to use genuine traditional Japanese carpentry techniques as conditions permit. He specializes in renovating traditional Japanese houses and giving lectures on traditional Japanese woodworking. Takami participated in the 62nd Jingu-shikinen Sengu, and currently runs a construction company in Kyoto called Suikoushya.
In February of 2018, with the support of more than 200 people, from dozens of countries around the world through a Kickstarter campaign, Takami built a Japanese woodworking school in Kyoto, Japan where students from all over the world can study Japanese woodworking in English.
At this school, students learn the basics of how to adjust and use Japanese hand tools. The school has accepted 55 students since it opened its doors in 2018. Past students range from active carpenters to hobbyists, architects and artists. He also held a one-week short-term workshop overseas (with 200 participants) and a one-day woodworking experience workshop (with 100 participants so far) in Japan to share woodworking with woodworking enthusiasts around the world.
Check out more about student experience at Suikoushya International Woodworking School
It’s a Japanese woodworking video that you can learn in English
This series of videos are filmed and edited from the actual lessons that were held at the Suikoushya Japanese woodworking school. These are authentic videos of all the lessons, with contents for the entire month that include instructions and explanations, live demonstrations, as well as Q&As and interactions with the students during the class.
It’s a pity that we won’t be able to give specific technical guidance as one would in an actual classroom setting, but through the videos we hope to provide an opportunity for all to learn important knowledge and ideas about wood and woodworking tools, and above all, the spirit of Japanese craftsmanship. All videos have English subtitles so you don’t need to be able to speak Japanese to understand our lessons.

How to use funds
I have the knowledge and skills about Japanese woodworking that I want to share with people all over the world. However, because of COVID19, it is currently nearly impossible for most people to enter Japan to study in a classroom setting. At this moment, the only way to share Japanese woodworking with you is through the internet. I have launched the “Online Classroom to learn Japanese Woodworking English” project so we can continue sharing Japanese woodworking despite being in the midst of this global pandemic.
All the money raised from this campaign will be used to edit and translate the filmed lessons. However, we would like to get the support of at least 200 people, otherwise there will be a lack of demand to create these videos. I want to share the world of Japanese woodworking with everyone who loves Japanese woodworking from all over the world! So please share this with as many people as you can.Â
Your share will help make this project a success. We thank you and appreciate your support!

You may have questions during the course, but I won’t be able to answer them right away. It will be up to you to continue learning Japanese woodworking for a month. We aim to finish editing and translating all videos by December 2020. Please be patient with us to ensure that you get the best output.
I believe that one day I will be able to share some wonderful woodworking with you.
I would like to thank everyone for taking the time to read and follow our campaign.
