Sustainable, Vegan, and Natural Dental Care for Dogs: The Dog Toothbrush & Toothpaste Reinvented for a Better Brushing Experience.

Story

Did you know that over 80% of dogs over the age of 3 have an active dental disease according to Veterinary Centres of America.

Dental disease leads to painful inflammation, tooth loss, bad breath, and serious infections that can lead to death.

But there is a solution

Introducing the Teddy Pet Care Kit with a natural and vegan pup toothpaste and dog mouthwash made in the USA, a reinvented toothbrush, and a brushing ball for playtime.

Brushing your dog’s teeth is one of top recommended ways to prevent oral disease in your pup and keep their breath smelling fresh.

Unfortunately, most dog oral care ingredients have a lot of bad stuff linked to health issues; ingredients like harmful chemicals and even natural ingredients that are toxic to dogs.

Our Teddy Pet Care Oral Kit includes everything needed to promote healthy oral hygiene without harmful ingredients and toxic chemicals.

We’ve created a kit of 4 products that work together for healthy oral hygiene and fresh breath. Check out the products in detail below!

Natural Toothpaste (Pup Pumpkin Spice Flavoured):

Removing all the bad, adding all the good. Prevent plaque build up, whiten teeth, and keep breath fresh.

We recommend brushing a minimum of once every 2 days. The tube is made from recycled PET plastic.

*Note, the label in images and video mentions “Peanut butter flavour”. We have changed the available flavour to “Pup Pumpkin Spice”  instead as a healthier natural option.

Teddy Toothbrush:

Soft and effective. Thousands of bristles work together to cover more surface area and brush each tooth with precision. Less painful and softer than other pet brushes on the market for easier brushing on stubborn pups. Made from recycled plastic and available in two sizes, small and large.

Natural Water Additive (Mouthwash):

A simple solution with antibacterial properties to reduce gum inflammation, prevent plaque build up, and freshen breath. Add the recommended dosage to your dogs water once per day or every second day. Packaging made from recyclable aluminum.

Bristle Ball

Chew toys can help keep teeth healthy. Keep playtime fun while promoting healthy oral hygiene. Silicon bristle grooves are designed to scrape off plaque and grime as your dog chews on the ball. Also try hiding their favorite treats within the ball to encourage self-brushing.

Ingredients We Avoid

You should know what you’re putting in your pets body. Most dog owners don’t know what’s in their pets toothpaste. Even your favourite, vet recommended, toothpastes and mouthwash will include mystery ingredients that may be harmful to dogs including:

  •  Alcohol: Some products can include up to 25% alcohol. This may kill bad bacteria but it will also kill the good bacteria in your dog’s mouth! Alcohol products may also cause gum irritation.
  •  Artificial Colouring: Some food colouring may cause allergic reactions in dogs. Extreme dangers of food colouring include links to cancer and reproductive development toxicity.
  •  Artificial Preservatives: Artificial preservatives have been linked to dog allergies and organ system toxicity. These products are used to make the products last longer without going bad (longer shelf life) but they won’t have significant benefits for your pup. Common examples: Potassium Sorbate and Sodium Benzoate.
  •  Artificial Sweeteners: Not all sweeteners are bad but we recommend looking up sweetener ingredients online for any ingredients you’re unfamiliar with when it comes to pet products. Ingredients like xylitol are commonly used and are safe for humans but can cause a drop in blood glucose levels in dogs.
  •  Parabens: Parabens act as a hormone disruptors linked to immune toxicity. Many studies also suggest parabens have links to cancer.
  • Other common ingredients we suggest avoiding: Floride, Sodium Hexametaphosphate.

Even some natural ingredients can be risky. For example, you may see rosemary as an ingredient in some natural products but there are some studies suggesting that rosemary may cause seizures in humans and dogs. As pet parents, we don’t want to take that risk! Also be aware that some essential oils can be toxic to dogs depending on the dosage. Ingredients like Aloe Vera and Peppermint Oil are listed as Toxic to Dogs, Cats, and Horses on the ASPCA website.

Our products have been developed from scratch with ingredients you’ll understand. Our toothpaste and mouthwash are made in the USA with only premium ingredients.

We found the most effective ingredients for keeping your dogs oral hygiene healthy. We’re truly reinventing the pet oral hygiene space because we care about our pets.

Here’s our ingredients and each of their purposes:

Toothpaste:

  •  Coconut oil. Oil from coconuts with anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties. Some vets say coconut oil can help with digestion and mental function in older dogs, when used as a supplement. Coconut oil can also help your dogs coat stay sleek and glossy. Lastly, coconut oil benefits metabolic function, bone health, and more.

  •  Purified Water. Premium filtered water used to help create the texture of the toothpaste.
  •  Calcium Carbonate: A compound found in minerals. This is a common supplement used by dogs to strengthen bones and teeth. In our toothpaste, calcium carbonate helps clean teeth.
  •  Hydrated Silica: Cleans teeth and creates toothpaste texture.
  •  Vegetable Glycerin : Keeps the toothpaste moist and prevents it from drying out.
  •  Natural Xanthan Gum: a gum texture derived from fermented vegetable matter. In our toothpaste, it helps blend the ingredients together and acts as a thickener and stabilizer.
  •  Natural Enzymes: Naturally derived enzymes that help fight off plaque and clean teeth.  These naturally derived enzymes are some of the most effective ingredients in top rated pet oral care products.
  •  Pumpkin Powder and Cinnamon: Dried pumpkin powder (real pumpkin) and cinnamon for a delicious pup friendly pumpkin spice flavor. Pumpkin is also rich in vitamin E.

Water Additive (Mouthwash)

  •  Coconut oil. Oil from coconuts with anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties. Some vets say coconut oil can help with digestion and mental function in older dogs, when used as a supplement. Coconut oil can also help your dogs coat stay sleek and glossy. Lastly, coconut oil benefits metabolic function, bone health, and more.
  •  Purified Water: Premium filtered water that contributes to the mouthwash liquidity.
  •  Natural Enzymes: Naturally derived enzymes that help fight off plaque and clean teeth.  These naturally derived enzymes are some of the most effective ingredients in top rated pet oral care products.
  •  Vegetable Glycerin : Keeps the water additive moist and prevents it from drying out.
  •  Green Tea Leaf Extract (Without caffein): A natural ingredient with inflammatory and antibacterial properties. The properties can help protect against gingivitis and gum disease.
  •  Chlorophyll: A pigment found in almost all plants and algae. It’s part of the nutrients your dog is seeking when they eat grass. Chlorophyll fights infections, can aid in healing wounds, and can contribute to a stronger immune system.  “In studies published in the American Journal of Surgery, researchers have found that chlorophyll can be a powerful agent in eliminating bacteria and toxins when consumed on a regular basis”. Bacteria is one of the many causes of bad breath in dogs.

  • When choosing consumable products for your pets, always read the ingredient list and do an online search if you’re unfamiliar with what’s safe for your pet.

  • Understand the risk level of each ingredient. Interestingly enough, sometimes non-natural or chemically made ingredients can still be good for your dogs. It’s important to understand that even some natural ingredients can be bad for your pup as well (example: Peppermint Oil). Determine whether the ingredients in the products you’re using have a necessary purpose and if they do more harm than good. Some ingredients used in oral care by other brands like peppermint oil or cetylpyridinium chloride may be extremely diluted and still safe for your pet but they can be harmful and higher doses(consult your vet it you’re unsure about the ingredients you’re using).

  • Bones and hard chew toys can be harmful to dog teeth, especially for small dogs. As a general rule of thumb, if you can’t bend the chew toys or bone, or if it hurts to tap it on your knee, it’s probably too hard.

  • Carrots make a great natural dental chew that can help minimize tartar and plaque build up. It’s healthy for your pup and has a number of other health benefits for dogs. Make sure you dog doesn’t choke on the carrots.

  • Try to take your dog for regular check ups at the vet that include an oral checks. Many dogs will encounter plaque and tartar build up even with regular brushing. Small dogs like Yorkis, Chihuahuas, and Pomeranians are extremely prone to periodontal disease from a young age. Vets can offer a professional cleaning that can clean deeper than your everyday brush… like when humans go to the dentist. Even if you plan to get your pup a professional cleaning, keep up with regular brushing for maintain the best oral hygiene possible.
