Pylot is the first wearable to track your mental energy, helping improve your productivity.

Story

Pylot is the first wearable to track your mental energy, helping improve your productivity. It uses electroencephalogram (EEG) and heart rate variability (HRV) sensors to track Flow and Mental Fatigue, pinpointing your best times for deep work and suggesting breaks when necessary.

How it works

Pylot uses EEG to measure brain wave activity and a PPG sensor to measure heart rate variability (HRV). This data is then used to track your Flow and Mental Fatigue.

Using Pylot

Incorporate Pylot seamlessly into your daily routine—simply wear it while you work to get real-time feedback and recommendations.

Read how our team uses Pylot to manage their mental energy to maximize productivity in this short article.

The Pylot app is available on Mac and Windows. Both apps have all the features outlined on this page, with more improvements and features being added monthly.

Identify optimal work times

Pylot uses EEG and HRV sensors to track Flow and Mental Fatigue, pinpointing your best times for deep work.

Live feedback

Receive live feedback on your Flow and Mental Fatigue as well as a recommendation for deep work, shallow tasks, or to take a break when necessary.

Mental energy by day

Views trends to see your mental energy by day, time, date, activity and session length.

Experiment with routines

Try different work routines to see what helps get you in Flow to perform at your best.

Review your day

Get a summary of your day to review each individual work session, along with how your day went.

We also have plans to release apps on iOS and Android during 2024. These will not be ready for launch.

IndieGoGo backers of Pylot will receive a lifetime premium subscription. When Pylot introduces paid premium features, IndieGoGo backers will receive access to these for free.

Tags

Tag your sessions with various habits to discover what contributes to reaching a state of high Flow. Does taking a ‘walk’ enhance your mental sharpness? Does listening to ‘music’ delay fatigue?

Moments

While working, a simple click within the app lets you pinpoint a moment on your graph for later review. If you’re interrupted by a phone call or remain engrossed in coding, just mark it, and you can later revisit this instance to assess its effect on your cognitive performance.

Coming Soon

Post-launch, Pylot has a roadmap aimed at helping you learn more about your cognitive performance to boost your Flow and maximise your deep work.

Mobile Apps

The iOS and Android apps will be released in 2024. These will not be ready for launch as we have prioritized the Mac and Windows applications, given the primary use case of productivity.

The Team

Several members of the team previously worked together at Logitech. They noticed they would spend hours each morning in meetings and then struggle to do deep work in the afternoon. Were they fatigued or just lazy? Pylot was born to answer this question.

The Pylot team have experience at Google, Logitech, Tag Heuer, Withings and Jaybird. Collectively, they have been granted over 15 patents related to wearables.

Pylot’s internal team manages all software development, while New Zealand-based engineering contractors have assisted with hardware development.

Timeline

Pylot has evolved over five years from tackling a complex scientific question—measuring cognitive performance using consumer-grade sensors—to releasing a commercial product.

The Science

On average, knowledge workers find just 2 hours and 23 minutes of productive time in their day, with more than half expressing dissatisfaction with their productivity levels. However, a McKinsey study revealed that executives in a flow state are five times as productive. They concluded that increasing the time spent in flow by 20% could potentially double your daily productivity.

Numerous studies affirm that achieving a flow state correlates with higher performance levels, improved work efficiency, and enhanced cognitive function, including better exam results. Research has also shown that flow contributes to greater team productivity and individual job satisfaction (2022 literature review published in Frontiers in Psychology).

Meanwhile, research has shown that mental fatigue results in decreased cognitive performance, increased error rate, and reduced productivity and work output.

Over a span of two years, Pylot has executed hundreds of scientific trials, monitoring participants as they engage in diverse cognitive tasks. Leveraging consumer-grade EEG and HRV sensors, Pylot has developed an affordable yet accurate wearable device. The proprietary algorithms for measuring cognitive performance are currently patent-pending.

Pylot utilizes EEG technology to monitor flow by measuring Alpha brain wave activity. Our validation trials involved analyzing 16 competitive gamers across 1634 competitive online matches. Their win rate was significantly higher when they had high flow, while win rate decreased when they started playing in a fatigued state.

Pylot stands out as the sole consumer product on the market, to our knowledge, that offers an assessment of mental fatigue, employing a blend of EEG and HRV technologies to determine shifts in mental fatigue with 82.2% accuracy. Analyzing the data from competitive gamers, Pylot discovered that players who began a game with lower fatigue levels had a higher chance of winning. Conversely, those starting a match with higher fatigue levels had a reduced likelihood of victory.

Pylot personalizes feedback by learning each user’s unique baseline for EEG and HRV values, which can vary greatly from person to person. Although initial feedback is provided from the first use, the accuracy of this feedback improves over time as Pylot continues to fine-tune its understanding of your individual baseline with continued use.

Manufacturing

The Pylot Band was designed and developed in New Zealand. Manufacturing is being done in both New Zealand and China, with final assembly being done in New Zealand.

Production stage

Pylot currently has a fully functional product, which includes prototype Pylot Bands, as well as Windows and Mac apps. We have undertaken several months of trials with beta users after manufacturing 40 Pylot bands.

We are currently completing mechanical changes to the band before mass production. These changes are focused on improved comfort.

Duty, Tax and Shipping

For all destinations other than New Zealand, this item will be shipped duty-unpaid (DDU) using a tracked delivery service from New Zealand. You will be responsible for any tax or duties associated with your shipment. This can be paid before shipping to make shipping quicker.

New Zealand Backers and GST

As required by law, as a registered New Zealand company, GST applies to all New Zealand backers. The IndieGoGo payment does not include GST, so we must collect the GST (15%) after the Indiegogo campaign. A GST invoice will be available on request.

Risks and Challenges

Pylot has proactively reduced potential delays and cost concerns by manufacturing and thoroughly testing 40 units in the past three months. We’ve also secured a sufficient supply of essential components, such as sensors and BLE chips, to mitigate shortage risks. Although pre-production products inherently carry some risks, we believe these risks to be minimal.
