Classic OVD watch revived and reborn with stronger force.

Story

On April 10, 1912, RMS Titanic embarked on her maiden voyage to New York – also the only voyage she ever made. Being the largest ship afloat at the time, Titanic attracted a lot of people among whom were some of the tycoons with deepest pockets on earth tempting to taste the luxuries and glamour of Titanic and hoping to explore new opportunities in the United States. The voyage ended up a  catastrophe – one of the deadliest sinkings for a single trip on earth with casualties over 1,500. Almost 66% of the passengers and crew aboard could not make it home. Instead, they were laying in the deep water in the Atlantic Ocean eternally. Captain Edward Smith and chief designer Thomas Andrews also perished with Titanic – both fighting to save others till the very last moment of their lives.

Thanks for all the support in the previous collection of TitanicX. We have received a lot of positive comments and feedback asking for a relaunch of TitanicX. The OVD team decided to bring back “TitanicX-Reborn” and level up.

To optimize the two most important parts of the previous generation TitanicX, we have made some changes on movement and dial.

For movement, we replaced the Miyota 8215 movement with the Swiss Sellita SW200-1 movement. The Sellita SW200-1 is a round caliber with mechanical lever movement, automatic winding and a ball-bearing rotor with high elevator efficiency. With the 28,800 vibrations per hour, the second hand runs very smoothly. This movement’s stability and running time accuracy have been greatly improved.

As for the Dial, we received a lot of requests from backers asking if the rusting effect could be also applied to the Dial in the previous campaign. At that time, we were unable to achieve that due to technical constraints. Since then, we have been pegging away trying to accomplish this. With the new embossing and 3D printing technology, finally we could bring this idea to life. We are so happy to see the result and it has really been a collaborative effort with our valuable backers.

OVD TitanicX-Reborn collection comes in 5 color options and 10 combinations: Shipwreck (OVD/010), Seaweed (OVD/020), Dusk (OVD/030), Noctiluca (OVD/040), and Reef (OVD/ 050). Each model comes with either a leather strap and a metal bracelet according to each backer’s needs.

All indexes, printing, calendar date and hands of this watch are added with Swiss Super-Luminova luminous coating. Super-Luminova can be charged multiple times without decreasing its strength. The brightness and durability of the light varies on the amount of light it absorbs.  The bright and long-lasting light from Super-Luminova depends on how much light it absorbs beforehand.

With Swiss Super-Luminova luminous coating, TitanicX-Reborn is still easy to read in the darkness.

To bring forth the “rusty effect” that evokes the passage of time and events transpired we made the rotor part of the movement exceptionally rusty, just like an anchor that has been sunk on the seabed and rusted for years. The wind, frost and the worn-down of time are inspired by the Titanic. New embossing and 3D printing technology are also used to help accomplish this effect. The result is the very first design in the watch industry with this much level of rusty effect. Originality in our design is the most important thing our team has pursued.

The dial is assembled in multi-layer structure, coupled with the calendar plate at the bottom. Layering creates a more 3D and in-depth look to the watch. The rusty surface is certainly a key feature of our TitanicX-Reborn collection.

The design of the buckle is derived from the machinery and components on the ship. This buckle adopts a structure of three sets of component combinations, which makes it easier to fit to wearer’s wrist and ensures comfort and wearability. The new design and combination is truly an OVD team effort.

Inspired by a vintage porthole window, the case back design is round with a mineral glass cover. Wearers can have a look through the porthole – just as passengers on the Titanic could witness the fatal shipwreck.

The Sellita SW200 is a Swiss automatic calibre and is widely considered to be the main competitor of the ETA 2824. It has a diameter of 25.6mm and a thickness of 4.60mm. Since Sellita sources the same suppliers as ETA for components and parts, it is safe to assume that the Sellita SW200 more or less utilises the same materials used to craft the ETA 2824. In terms of its technical features, the Sellita SW200 features manual winding and hacking capabilities, a 38-hour power reserve, and can produce 28,800 beats per hour (bph). It also provides the standard timekeeping functions, including the hours, minutes, central seconds, and the date.  The Sellita SW200 is an easy movement to work with, allowing us to modify the SW200 in any way we please.

The Standard Sellita SW200 generates an accuracy of +/- 12 seconds per day. Finally, the SW200 stands as the top-of-the-line Sellita calibre, matching the criteria of the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute.

The TitanicX Reborn embodies bold spirit and soul.  With a 100 meter water resistance, this watch is ideal for brave explorers.

The crown is located at the 3 o’clock position and is tightened when not in use to ensure its waterproof ability. The TitanicX-Reborn logo (X) is deeply engraved on the crown.

The TitanicX-Reborn case is made of 316L stainless steel; it exhibits high corrosion resistance, high durability, and strength at high temperatures. These features enable the watch to be worn almost anywhere and exert its best performance.

The corners of TitanicX-Reborn are slightly bent and close to the wrist, making the watch extremely comfortable to wear. In addition, the surface of the case has been brushed and sandblasted to give a finer texture to the watch.

TitanicX-Reborn is made of anti-reflective sapphire crystal to protect the internal workings of the watch. Compared to traditional mineral crystals, it is more scratch-resistant, anti-fouling, super-protective and has a longer service life.

The watch strap of the TitanicX-Reborn Collection are made with genuine Italian Crazy Horse leather and tanned vegetable leather. The leather is soft and heavy duty brushed so it matches with the timeless rustic flavors of the watch. The bottom of the belt is hot-pressed with TitanicX-Reborn’s iconic mark. All the belts are equipped with quick-release spring bars, which allows users to quickly change the belt without tools and make a different match for the watch every day.

Shipwreck (OVD/010) is the most vintage-looking timepiece in the TitanicX-Reborn collection. To replicate the Titanic shipwreck lying deep down in the ocean, a full rusty effect runs all over the case and dial.

Seaweed (OVD/020) is TitanicX-Reborn with a green dial, green case and beige leather strap. The seaweed color simulates the giant seaweed that grows in the deep waters.

Dusk (OVD/030) is the TitanicX-Reborn with a mustard yellow dial, silver case and honey brown strap.  As the Titanic sank into the ocean at night, a somber moonlight encompasses the catastrophic scene.

Noctiluca (OVD/040) is the TitanicX-Reborn with an icy blue dial, ashy case and grey leather strap recreating the scene in which the Titanic sailed into the massive icebergs in the ocean.

Reef (OVD/ 050) is the TitanicX-Reborn with a black dial,  khaki case and brown leather strap.

Packaging plays a very important role in our design. We designed a leather roll wallet for the TitanicX-Reborn. The watch roll is made using high quality leather with soft dark green suede leather on the exterior, coupled with leather straps and logo bronzing.
Our goal is to complete the story with convincing packaging to align with the whole setting. The metal warranty card is accompanied by a retro design manual so wearers can have a full version of the story – right from the very first moment when they see the packaging to the moment when the watch rests quietly on their wrists.

Our team moved to Taiwan 4 months ago. The change in lifestyle, the artsy atmosphere and rich culture have certainly brought some good inspiration and positive to our designer. He is now even more creative, gaining new perspectives on life and its surroundings. The OVD studio in Taipei also allows OVD team to meet more local collectors in person. It serves as a platform and venue for us to share the story behind every timepiece design.
