Surprise Your Friends. Avoid Your Enemies!

Story

Our team has created 25 fully functional invisibility shields, now we need your support to finish turning science fiction into reality and make them available for everyone.

To thank you for supporting our project, we will manufacture and ship one (or more if desired) of our invisibility shields for you. Assembly takes ten minutes and everything you need will come in the box.

Each shield uses a precision engineered lens array to direct much of the light reflected from the subject away from the observer, sending it sideways across the face of the shield to the left and right. Because the lenses in this array are vertically oriented, the vertically oriented strip of light reflected by the standing/crouching subject quickly becomes very diffuse when spread out horizontally on passing through the back of the shield. In contrast, the light reflected from the background is much brighter and wider, so when it passes through the back of the shield, far more of it is refracted both across the shield and towards the observer. From the observer’s perspective, this background light is effectively smeared horizontally across the front face of the shield, over the area where the subject would ordinarily be seen.

The top down cross section (below) picturing one of the shield’s lenses shows that much of the light entering the back of the shield is refracted to a focal point and then spread out to the sides from there. However, when the outer surface of the lens reaches a sufficiently shallow angle relative to the angle of the incoming light ray, the light is reflected internally, rather than refracted out. It is then diffused, reflected and refracted around and out of the lens where it can also interact with the lenses on either side.

The optical arrays we’ve used to make the shields are created by extruding and then embossing a polymer to form sheets of elongate, convex lenses running in parallel. In order for these sheets to manipulate light in the right way to create functional invisibility shields, the lenses must have specific shape and be formed with very high precision. To find the best configuration for a shield, we tested a variety of different lens shapes with varying profiles, angles, depths and separation distances.

We also tested a range of different optical mounting techniques for adhering the arrays to stronger scaffolds. Our solution, which was essential for making the shields as low cost as possible, preserves 98% of the optical properties of the arrays and completely eliminates the need for toxic resins that might ordinarily be used in such a build.

The shields perform at their absolute best against uniform backgrounds such as foliage, grass, rendered walls, sand, sky and asphalt. Backgrounds with defined horizontal lines work really well too and these can be natural features such as the horizon or man made features like walls, rails or painted lines.

A few years back, the internet was buzzing with chatter about independent makers working on turning science fiction into reality and creating fully functional invisibility shields. People were swapping designs, sharing ideas and some of us were even patching sketchy looking shields together in workshops and garages. Even though these initial creations didn’t work so well and there were many barriers yet to overcome, it still seemed like one day, working invisibility shields could actually be possible.

But by late 2020, progress had mostly stalled, too many roadblocks had been hit, hardly anyone seemed to be releasing new prototypes anymore and most people appeared to have lost interest in the idea altogether.

Disappointed by the lack of progress and the continued unavailability of actual working invisibility shields, we decided to step things up and go all in on our project to create one. We went through countless iterations, tested a lot of materials, and experienced a lot of failure. But along the way, we managed to develop a reliable, scalable and efficient manufacturing process and created what we believe are the best invisibility shields ever made.

Would this work as an anti-riot shield? (No, absolutely not, sorry!)

The only thing our shields have been designed to do is shield you from view. The shield faces and supports are made from a flexible/non-rigid material, they have not been designed to protect you from any kind of attack and would not be of any use in such situations.
