Story

All your needs, one simple device.

Capable and versatile

You can browse, work, watch Netflix, Zoom, code and all the usual computer stuff. Into music? Abacus Basic is also MIDI Controller Compatible. And it works right out of the box! All you need is a 18W or more PD power supply and your favourite display.  Pre installed with Windows 10 & compatible with Linux.

All that, but as energy efficient as a low consumption lightbulb.

What people are saying.

User Testimony

We have been relentlessly testing our prototype with various users. We got user feedback from wide-range of people including with University students, office workers and even a visually impaired person.

No wires. No Problem.

Wireless keyboards

Infinite Connect allows the keyboard to slide on and off the computer module without the need for WIFI or bluetooth connections, allowing you to sit back on your sofa and use the keyboard without getting caught up in the wires. It is based off 2.4 GHz connectivity,  paired right out of the box and always stays connected to your Abacus Basic. The cables stay connected to the PC unit, so you can avoid staring at your cable (mis) management.  When you need to charge the keyboard and trackpad, all you need is a USB power supply and a micro USB cable.

Abacus Basic. A PC for the planet and people

By focusing on building products for the needs of the people and the planet, we created a PC at an affordable price point that reduces both energy consumption by 75% and e-waste by at least 63%.

<;

As efficient as a lightbulb.

Because of its compact foot print and on-board processor, Abacus Basic has a power consumption reduced to the maximum. Since it can run off 5/9/12/20V, you can power it off any battery or power supply (even phone chargers!) that has a PD power output. In idle use, it uses a maximum of 3Wh and when in full blast, a maximum of 12Wh, setting a new standard for computers.

Reducing e-waste

By focusing on building products for the needs of the people and the planet, we created a PC at an affordable price point that reduces both energy consumption by 75% and e-waste by at least 63%.

22X times smaller. Less is more.

When it comes to environmental impact, sometimes less is really more. Our secret to saving energy is using parts from mobile devices which consumes much less electricity. Having a board the size of a deck of card also decreases material use to manufacture.

Great balance for everyday use.

Abacus Basic is capable of doing all of your daily task while offering new perks in comparison to other PC form factors.

Why no screen?

Displays are by far the most expensive, most fragile and polluting part of any computer. And it turns out almost everyone has one already! Either in the shape of a TV, monitor, a tablet or even a phone. Not having a screen makes our product super durable too because you won’t have to discard it for a dead pixel, a coating that peels off or a broken display …

Built to last.

All of our plastics are injection moulded with a wall thickness of 2.5mm making it super robust. The Abacus Basic housing is almost impossible to break without intense heat.

Our Philosophy : creating tools for the independent minded.

Since the dawn of civilisation, tools have propelled the human species forward by empowering us to create more with less. Now we are entering a digital & information age where access to digital tools is becoming a human right.

Unfortunately, computers are still out of the financial reach of 4.2 billion people and fragile and more expensive than tech is becoming a luxury not a tool. It is time to change the game. We’re bringing back the 80’s philosophy of making simple and robust tech tools for the everyday people.

Celebrating great British traditions

Sir Clive Sinclair, a “tireless inventor ahead of his time”, developed the world’s first slimline electronic pocket calculator and the UK’s first affordable mass market home computer. Clive was motivated by much of the same reasons we are – by the thought that “you could get computer power into the hands of a lot of people”.

Why Indiegogo?

We have been working on Abacus Basic for more than two years. After months of prototyping, we now have a solid and tested design ready for production. We figured out our path to the market, from suppliers all the way up to manufacturers.

To finally take the last few steps – getting Abacus Basic into mass production and democratizing global access to computing – we need the support of the Indiegogo community.

Behind the scenes: from sketch to finish

From the initial sketches when the company was founded in 2019, to factory produced end products, our team has worked tirelessly to make the best version possible – the Abacus Basic.

Sketches

The initial prototype was produced in early 2020, followed by a series of user and stress testing in remote villages in Indonesia.

After many development cycles, the product is ready for factory production with the mould and hardware being complete in April of 2022.

 Production

Risks and challenges

We are finishing production in Indonesia, where the project all started. We already have our hands on finished iterations of the Abacus. Our main risk is for this campaign to not reach its goal! The second risk is all about the semiconductor productions shortage delaying production. We have 3000 units secured at the factory we work with, and are in the process of ordering the next batch.

Environmental commitments

Long-lasting design

We have made sure the Abacus is a tough product. The case is made out of ABS (if you have ever stepped on a LEGO, you know how strong it is …). The board is very easy to access and potentially replacable by the user as it is only 4 screws away from being accessed to.

Sustainable materials

The ABS we use is recycled directly from the factory we work with. We are also establishing partnerships with ocean waste collectors to use it in our own products.

Something else

The Abacus is establishing itself as super low consumption device with only 31kWh used per year when plugged in constantly.
