A lightweight throttle-on-demand electric BMX that rips from 0 to 30 in 5 seconds.

Story

A hybrid of nimble bicycle and powerful motorcycle, the Chimera Electric BMX is user-friendly to repair, light enough to effortlessly carry up a flight of stairs, small enough to fit on trains and in hatchbacks, and is backwards compatible with existing bike parts.

We utilize a new kind of ‘High-Drive’ technology (patent pending) and super lightweight titanium materials to achieve a power-to-weight ratio unparalleled in the ebike world. Our bikes rocket up to 35mph in just a few seconds, but weigh about as much as a non-motorized BMX.

The High-Drive is a new kind of modular ebike motorization system that is light, powerful, and easy to work on.

The Chimera offers over 3800 watts of power in a bike that weighs as little as 35.4lbs. That makes for a bicycle that has as much horsepower per pound as a Corvette. This gives the rider quick acceleration and enough torque to dominate hills.

Bike shops and do-it-yourself types will love that the entire motorization system consists of just 6 components, each of which can be removed with an Allen wrench. The primary wear items on the bike are affordable, simple to install, and readily available to keep your bike running for decades.

We designed the Chimera to be fully compatible with a variety of off-the-shelf parts. The PF30 bottom bracket standard allows both BMX cranks (6″+ spindle) and standard MTB cranks. The 1/8″ chain allows cogs and chainwheels of all thicknesses. And any single-speed 135mm wide hub will work (including Hope hubs, Onyx Hubs, and Industry Nine hubs).

We make our frame, fork, and handlebars out of titanium. It’s nearly half the weight of steel, drastically stronger than aluminum, and rust-proof. It is the material of choice for high-end bicycles. We also like it because it looks killer.

The Chimera combines true BMX geometry with widened MTB wheel standards for extra durability and effective disc-braking.

Josh Gragg designed a sleek and simple app to control the bike’s settings via Bluetooth, thereby keeping the Chimera free from the unnecessary wiring and bulk of traditional displays. It connects with one click, and allows riders to monitor battery, temp, as well as customize max power, throttle responsiveness, and top speed. Riders can also save setting profiles.

We teamed up with Los Angeles based artist, Lauren YS, to create a shirt design based on the mythological idea of a Chimera, a female, fantastical creature, comprised of multiple species. They nailed it with this drawing of an insect-human hybrid eating a man, reminiscent of retro skateboard art. We also made branded hoodies. These items are all available in our Perks section in unisex sizing.

Hi. I’m Austin, the Founder of Chimera BMX. I wanted to make my daily commute fast and fun. I looked for an ebike that had all the features listed above. But it didn’t exist. So I started designing my own “High-Drive” system and titanium BMX frame. Nick Nieminen modeled it into CAD, and added a brilliant battery attachment system and some subtle frame details. The result is the Chimera: a combination of nimble bicycle and powerful motorcycle that’s user-friendly to repair, light enough to effortlessly carry up a flight of stairs, small enough to fit on trains and in hatchbacks, and is fully compatible with existing bike parts; cranks, hubs, chainwheels, etc.

We’re only making a small number for this first run of bikes. Primarily, that’s because we want to give extra care and attention to hand-assembling each and every one of them. Each frame is etched with a first-run serial number (e.g. “1 of 100”) for our founding contributors here on Indiegogo.

Our prototypes have been running phenomenally for over two years now. Our research and development on the High-Drive technology is done, and our supply lines are ready. What we need now are the funds to get production started. What you get in return is a hand-assembled electric BMX that is a first of its kind at a price well under our MSRP.

In theory, our manufacturing and assembly timeline will allow us to begin delivering as early as April. But things almost never go according to plan when ramping up a new production. New ebike companies are especially prone to shipping delays, production line difficulties, supply chain shortages, etc. We’re getting ahead of all of that in the following ways:

  • We have finished our research and development, purchased some of the molds necessary for our custom parts (e.g. hub and motor casing), and over the last two years have cultivated excellent relationships with all of our suppliers. That allows us to start production as soon as we receive our Indiegogo funds.
  • We are limiting our first production run to no more than 100 bikes. This helps shorten production time.
  • Although we’re doing everything we can to start shipping in April, we are asking you to plan on having your bike in August of 2023 to help give us plenty of lead time to deal with any potential delays. Expect your bike by next summer, but be pleasantly surprised if/when we get it done earlier than that. Orders will be shipped according to time of purchase. So the sooner you purchase, the sooner you get your bike.
