Hello, I’m Allen Ai, the founder of Furoomate Cat Litter Box, and I want to share the journey of creating our innovative product with you. I’ve been a cat owner for 12 years and have a deep passion for improving the cat litter box experience.

My journey began in 2018 when I set out to find a product that would simplify the cleaning and maintenance of cat litter boxes. Automatic litter boxes caught my attention, but I quickly realized that they only offered basic scooping features and often made the cleaning process more complicated.

In 2019, I worked with two pet product companies on automatic litter box projects, but I couldn’t shape them to meet my vision. This experience deepened my understanding of the challenges in this industry.

The Challenges of Automatic Litter Boxes

Automatic litter boxes had been around since 1999, yet they hadn’t gained the popularity of products like drones, vacuum cleaners, and air purifiers. The primary reasons were poor user experience and high prices.

User Experience Woes

Most automatic litter boxes boasted advanced features like odor control and cat identification, but these claims often fell short. Users found them ineffective and, to make matters worse, faced additional costs in cleaning and maintenance. I, too, faced frustration and impulsively discarded two automatic litter boxes due to these issues.

The Price Dilemma

Quality automatic litter boxes on the market typically cost $500 to $700. However, having worked as a drone engineer, I knew the value that engineering efforts could bring to a product. Comparing these prices to the features and experiences offered, it was evident that the current market was unreasonably priced.

A Better Solution

To create a reasonable solution, we needed to improve the user experience compared to manual litter boxes. Traditional manual boxes required regular scooping, litter addition, and thorough cleaning. We needed to provide the convenience of automatic scooping while retaining the benefits of manual boxes.

Our solution was a creative one: introduce a disposable lining that users could easily replace or clean, drastically reducing the cleaning effort.

Innovative Design

However, implementing this idea came with challenges. We had to redesign the litter box structure, transforming the spherical drum into a more accessible shape. We also designed a new transmission system to overcome existing issues.

This new design offered various benefits: comfort for cats, easy health observation, convenient litter addition, a cleaner exterior, simplified installation, fewer cleaning spots, and easier cleaning.

Addressing the Price Issue

The functional experience improvement also contributed to solving the price problem. The “open drum design” reduced the product’s volume and manufacturing costs, while the “wash-free/easy liner” service generated continuous income for the company. These factors enabled us to lower our product’s price, making it more accessible to users.

Achieving Our Goal

Through hard work and dedication, we managed to reduce the price of our automatic litter box from the typical $500 to $700 range to just $299. Our original target was $399, so this was an exciting achievement.

While we’ve addressed the major issues in this article, our journey doesn’t end here. We have solutions for complex challenges like app integration, health monitoring, odor control, and more.
