Assemble Anything, Anywhere, All At Once!

Story

MetMo Pocket Driver | Assemble Anything, Anywhere, All At Once!

Invented In 1871 And Miniaturised In 2023

A classic Icon of engineering history, miniaturised for the first time to create a tool unlike anything else. Bringing back a tool from the past to fix problems of today, they truly don’t make them like this anymore.

MetMo Pocket Driver is both a fidget toy and tool, keeping you satisfied for hours on end either fiddling with it or building your next project.

Pocket Driver is perfect for building anything! Designed for allen/hex key bits as well as standard screw and micro screw bits, there really isn’t anything it can’t handle! From Ikea furniture to a motorcycle kickstand, all can be assembled with this small but mighty tool!

Why Have We Created MetMo Pocket Driver?

After the success of our previous campaign, inspired by Conrad Baumann’s ratchet driver design from the 1950’s, a lot of backers loved the driver but wanted something smaller for everyday carry. So we set to work incorporating everything everyone loved from the first tool, miniaturised it and added in some extra magic too.

What Can It Do?

A compact multi-tool, designed to be the lightweight and portable.

Perfect for handling everything from computer builds to bicycle maintenance, and compact enough for your daily carry. Annoyingly small allen keys will be a thing of the past!

A pocket driver in a class of its own, with more torque than it knows what to do with! Pocket Driver is designed to bridge the gap between hex/allen keys, T-drivers and micro drivers, and of course, screwdrivers. What more could your pocket ask for?

Who’s It For?

Made for designers, engineers, thinkers, and anyone who wants to just take a moment to focus, relieve stress or play around. MetMo Pocket Driver is both a powerful and versatile tool and amazingly fun to fiddle with! After all, why should tools be only used in the workshop?

A Powerful Tool And The Perfect Desk Toy

Like a Swiss watch, each component interlocks perfectly so you can enjoy the endless motion of Pocket Driver’s moving parts.

Pocket Driver is a tool you won’t want to hide away in your tool box! Designed to be fiddled with, each rotation and click has been meticulously crafted to give you maximum satisfaction, even just sat at your desk.

A Satisfying Drive

Simply rotating the chuck is huuuuuuugely satisfying. The weight feels reassuring in your hand and you know that if you do ever need to drive something in, Pocket Driver is there for the job.

Instead of hiding the fun stuff away, we’ve left it exposed like the original, so you can see that satisfying motion. But wait there’s more! Every part is designed to click and move with ultimate satisfaction, more than just a tool and you won’t want to put it down!

Back To The Future Part II

Own a part of history as one of the early forms of the ratchet screwdriver, patented by Conrad Baumann under the brand name Baumann-Weltrecord, in the 1920’s.

Re-imagined using hardened materials and state of the art machining techniques, Baumann’s vision lives once more, driving home the quality and reliability for which his original was known.

With only a handful of originals left in the world and even fewer available for auction, we are keeping the story alive for future generations. Now building on what Baumann could have done if they had the engineering techniques of today.

With Pocket Driver we took everything Baumann pioneered, engineered out all of the weak points and made it as compact as physically possible. We then added in a bunch of new features, making it an extremely useful tool for the 21st century.

Get The Hell Out Of Here Allen!

Lets face it, hex and allen keys haven’t changed much, and they’re used for pretty much EVERYTHING! Cheap and cheerful, and they just work… most of the time.

Pocket Driver is a compact hybrid between a T-handle and ratchet driver, meaning you’ll never have to experience a painstakingly slow and finger pinching IKEA build ever again!

Take It Easy On The Hands

Normally hex keys can be really uncomfortable to use, think back to that undersized IKEA allen key…  sure, there are sets with handles on them, but who carries those around with them? Pocket Driver gives you torque and comfort in the palm of your hand.

This mini driver is perfect for building anything, designed for allen hex key bits as well as screw and micro screw bits there isn’t anything it can’t tackle. From Ikea furniture to a motorbike kickstand, all can be assembled with this small but mighty tool!

A Class Of Its Own

Pocket Driver forges a new class of tool, pocket sized but packs a punch.

With its impressive torque, this tool serves as a versatile screwdriver, a compact T driver, and a substitute for allen keys, while remaining agile enough to be used as a micro driver. Practical, and portable.

Why This Design And Not A Modern Ratchet Screwdriver?

Modern tools are made to a price, and most use cheap plastics and components that are designed to break after so many uses.  We wanted to make something with a full metal construction and bring engineering grade quality production into the world of tools, that would stand the test of time, putting fun and precision back into the task at hand.

The original design was hugely satisfying to fiddle with and we wanted to recreate that feeling by combining it with something which looked amazing, so you could even enjoy it at your desk as an excellent piece of engineering (and show it off to your friends 😉 )

We fell in love with the original design by Conrad Baumann and just how versatile it could be. The original was purely a screwdriver, but with some miniaturisation and tweaking we have created a much more useful tool.

Quick Release Handle

Quick release, fold out handle harnessing the power of the pivot. The handle pops into place in seconds giving you all the advantages of a bigger tool whilst taking up less space. It’s like the swiss army knife of screwdrivers… kind of.

A Whole New Way To Hold A Driver

The handle works with you depending on what space you are working in. Use in-line as a micro driver, off-line to get into a tight space but with some extra grip, use in T-mode to get some real power behind it and use the pistol grip for a comfortable driving experience.

Easy Reacher

No screw is out of reach for our tool, as it effortlessly navigates tight and inconvenient spaces, delivering impressive performance. The timeless classic design, updated for modern use, makes your life easier by requiring less effort to drive screws that are difficult to reach with conventional ratchet screwdrivers. Pocket Driver ensures that even the most stubbornly buried screws won’t escape its relentless power, allowing you to tackle any screw-driving task with ease!

MetMo Goes Micro

Built for micro bits, perfect for taking apart more fragile items like computers and lesser drivers, making this a versatile and handy tool.

Lets Torque About Your Bike

Don’t get caught out on the road!

A small fold away design that packs a real punch! Pocket Driver is perfect for keeping your pride and joy in top condition, small enough to accompany you wherever you go.

Two In The Chamber

Need a bit? We’ve got you covered. Pocket Driver has inline storage for two emergency bits to get you out of a bind. Load up with your most commonly used bits to keep you driving all day long.

Grab Hold Of Your Bits

Basic stuff, but weak magnets in drivers are a real pain point! A powerful neodymium magnetic bit holder grabs bits firmly, so you don’t end up leaving them stuck in what you’re working on… we’ve all been there!

Use with any drive bit

While we are talking bits, unlike the original 1950’s design, Pocket Driver is compatible with all standard removable Hex drive bits, so you can use it with 1000’s of modern fixtures, including your favourite brands from all over the world.

Forward and reverse

Easily flick between forward and reverse with a satisfying click.

Battery Free

Batteries? Not here! How many battery screwdrivers have you had to throw away because the battery has died? Know that 50 years from now Pocket Driver will be ready and waiting and work just the same.

Turbo-Drive Your EDC

A versatile and powerful addition to your everyday carry. Pocket Driver takes the solid build quality from our original Driver campaign and packs everything into a compact form factor that’s ready for some serious driving!

Dark, Light Or Play Both Sides?

In our OG Driver campaign you guys told us that you wanted a full stainless steel driver. We struggled to pull it off back then, but this time we’ve pulled out all the stops and delivered on what you wanted.

You can now choose from from aerospace grade black anodised aluminium, cold, hard Stainless steel to take it to the next level or choose to upgrade your base model with a stainless steel handle.

Go dark aluminium for casual use, if light weight and mobility are what you value. Upgrade your Pocket Driver with a stainless steel handle for the classic Driver look. Or if you want something that will survive a nuclear war and are planning on doing a lot of driving, go full stainless steel.

What’s MetMo Pocket Driver made of?

Built like tools of old, we design MetMo items to last a lifetime and beyond! A tool that can be passed down generations and like original designs from the early 19th century, last 100’s of years. No designed obsolescence or plastic in sight, just good old, over engineered and classically manufactured metal, unlike any other tool.

Safety Tests

For this project we had assumed that the weak points would once again be the handle, especially since we were to be using an aluminum alloy, but ho boy were we wrong!

We originally set up a rig that would test the handle to destruction much like in our original driver, but a combination of having a unibody design for the handle and using the same material they use in aircraft undercarriages, meant that the handle was not the part we needed to work on this time.

Our weak point it turns out was in the miniaturised chuck that make the mechanism work, we could put so much force through the handle that these could shear!

Below is an image of the rough and ready rig we made to break baby drivers…

Following these tests we went back to the drawing board and redesigned and reinforced these points to take a serious amount of weight.

We also went to an engineering simulation facility to run worst case scenario simulations and it reaffirmed our results. They were also able to help us experiment with some different alloys that are not as brittle.

Deflection simulation that mirrors the real world testing

Von Mises stress evaluation shows the areas receiving the highest strain

These simulations focus on the chuck region of the Pocket Driver, so you can see the handle has been simplified. Under a test of 100kg on the constellation points, we were able to maintain the weight without breakage.

To this point we haven’t been able to deform a handle… and trust me we’ve tried!

Talking the Torque

The big question on everyone’s mind, how does it measure up against existing gear? We wanted to know the same thing so we tested and filmed it so you can see too, check out the short video below.

Previous testimonials

This isn’t our first rodeo! We’ve delivered to over 11,500 backers through some of the hardest times over the last 4 years and with every campaign we get better and better. Here’s what some of our past backers have to say!

Want More?

A Case For Your Bits

It’s time to embrace the pocket tool kit life and upgrade your carry with a Pocket Driver and our Magnetic Bit Case.

Store 6 x 25mm bits in an enclosed case utilising the same handle design as Pocket Driver to lock your bits safely in place. A powerful rear magnet lets you easily slide your bits out of the case when needed.

We will release a very detailed update about the Magnetic Bit Case as the campaign progresses! (The Magnetic Bit Case is available as an add-on)

Pocket Pouch

We felt the original was lacking a nice pouch, so we wanted to include this from the get go. Don’t forget to add this on to your reward 🙂

Pocket Pack

We have added a couple of neat little features that allows the pouch to work unlike anything else. It can be worn on a belt or hung from a carabiner when working on the go. When working at a desk it fully unrolls to be used like a conventional tool roll, giving full and easy access to all of your bits.

Like a Swiss army knife of leather pouches! People will look on in wonderment at how many bits are stored in such a small space.

Mega Bits

Not standing for normal Allen keys that round off after encountering a hard job. We’ve created some of the hardest damn bits in existence, with S2 hardened tool steel these bits will tear a hole in the fabric of the universe… if you’re strong enough to put that much force through them! They will also last thousands of hours of happy screwing no matter how tough that cap screw is in there.

The fun bits

The question we asked ourselves: ‘what tasks do we always do but never have the tool to hand?’

We thought long and hard about this and our unanimous answer was – ‘Beer and boxes…’

You don’t really see bits like this for some reason… but they’re vital to any tool kit! ? Break into any box and open any bottle with these additional fun bits!

Here we have our Bit Blade and our Bottle Bit to take care of your beer deliveries.

So, What’s The Deal, Why Does It Cost £99?

Here at MetMo we are not your usual ‘buy it cheap, sell it high’ kind of company. We think ‘what would make this truly great?’ then uncompromisingly work towards that goal. This pursuit means we take a totally different route to make products.

But what does that mean? I hear you ask, well that means that we machine every part on state of the art CNC machines, normally used for slow precision engineering not designed for mass manufacture and it means that we use the best materials and surface finishes we can find and not the cheapest and fastest to make and this all costs more to do.

We do all this to make sure we are making products the way our forefathers used to, totally over engineered to last generations because they would not be happy with something that broke after a few years and neither are we!

Making of the Pocket Drive Prototype

Sit back, Relax and enjoy this video of the making of the MetMo prototype from scratch, with our master metal worker, Geoff.

We go through every milling, drilling, turning and tapping process to make a driver from raw billets of metal so you can see the amount of work involved in making a driver. Although this one off was made by hand using manual machinery, the production ones will use industrial CNC machinery.

What’s The Difference Between Pocket Driver And Our Original Driver?

Size, power output and cuteness.

Where Driver is perfect for heavy duty applications like driving in lag bolts or torquing up an M16 bolt, Pocket Driver comes into its own when working on every day mechanisms, like breezing through bicycle maintenance,  or impressing your partner with your newfound IKEA build speed.

Think of the original MetMo Driver like a Pershing; dependable, bullet proof and enough torque to run through a building. Pocket Driver is more like a Sherman; dependable, bullet proof and fast enough to go around the building.

Pocket Driver takes everything that makes the Driver great, shrinks it down to EDC proportions and laser focuses on making your everyday tasks a joy to carry out.
