Story

Hello,

Thank you for checking out our project. We are Jeffrey & Jill Dalton, creators of The Whole Food Plant Based Cooking Show and the authors of the Plant Based Cooking Made Easy cookbook series.

Ready to Publish Our Next Cookbook

We are ready to self-publish a beautiful hardcover first-edition of the next cookbook in our series: Plant Based Cooking Made Easy: Volume 2. We have 101 more of our tried and true recipes, each with a full color photo and a scannable QR code linking to a step-by-step video demonstration of how to prepare the recipe.

How Do I Get the Cookbook?

This Kickstarter campaign will fund the upfront self-publishing cost of the cookbooks and is THE WAY TO ORDER YOUR COPY and be first in line for delivery when the books are ready. To order your cookbook simply select a backer pledge tier that suits you. More details on the pledge tiers below.

Can I Get More Than One Copy?

YES! Additional books can easily be added to each pledge tier as add-ons in case you would like to gift a few books to loved ones. ❤️ Our Kickstarter funding goal is set to cover the cost of printing 3000 books but we can definitely print more, so feel free to add-on as many as you like!

We have partnered with Mascot Books to ensure we deliver a top quality cookbook from an industry leading hybrid publisher. Mascot is also handling our warehousing and fulfillment so everything is managed from one organized central location.

Our Cooking Show

For the past 7 years we have created our free weekly cooking show on YouTube from our home kitchen in pursuit of our mission to teach the world how to easily and permanently make the switch to a plant-based lifestyle.

Our Recipes

Some mouth watering recipes from the cookbook.

All of our recipes use unprocessed whole food plant-based (vegan) ingredients that are refined oil-free, sugar-free, and gluten-free, and that are low in sodium. We aim to use ingredients that are commonly available to make living a plant-based lifestyle accessible to everyone. Some of the 101 mouth watering recipes (pictured above) included in the cookbook are:

  • BBQ Tofu Curls & Coleslaw Wraps
  • Sweet Potato Spice Cake
  • Strawberry Shortcake
  • Cabbage Rolls with Yogurt Sauce
  • Italian Tofu Bake
  • Black Bean Burgers
Some of our plant based heroes that inspire and inform our recipes.

We base our recipes on the work of pioneering plant-based doctors and researchers like Dr. T. Colin Campbell, Dr. Michael Greger, Dr. Michael Klaper, Dr. Alan Goldhamer, and many others to ground our recipes in the latests nutritional science.

Building on the Success of Our First Cookbook

Our first cookbook in this series: Plant Based Cooking Made Easy: Volume 1

Though we make all of our recipes freely available on our website, we published our first cookbook in this series with Penguin Random House back in December 2020 in direct response to the overwhelming requests from our viewers for a printed cookbook of our recipes. Our first cookbook has sold over +12,000 copies, to viewers all over the world, and holds a 4.7 out of 5 star rating on Amazon.

As a Kickstarter exclusive, we are adding a digital version of our first cookbook into the Kickstarter tiers to add even more value to the campaign!

Tell Me About the NEW Cookbook!

Placeholder cover design while we work on the final design.

The 9×9-inch hardcover shines in full color, with satin finish and spot gloss coating. We will be working on the cover design while the Kickstarter runs and will update this placeholder image with the final design when it is ready.

Share Your Story & Appear in the Book!

We are reserving 202 spots (two on each recipe page) in the cookbook to feature your Plant Based Transformation Stories! We are offering a limited Kickstarter pledge tier to have your name, picture, and brief summary of your plant based success immortalized on one of the recipe pages! These limited spots will likely fill up quickly.

Get the Big Picture

The 9×9-inch format allows us plenty of space for the recipe and a full color photograph for all 101 recipes showing the finished dishes so you have a clear idea of what to expect. We take the photos right when we finish filming the demonstration video so you can see how the recipes turn out in a real home kitchen.

A Healthy Spine

The upgraded half cloth case binding with silver foil printed title adds a touch of timeless class and offers a nice grip texture.

Lay Flat While You Cook

The lay-flat- binding means there is no need for a cookbook stand or paper weights. These books will lay beautifully flat on the counter while you cook.

Foreword Thinking

One of our plant-based heroes, Dr. Michael Greger, generously wrote us a wonderful foreword for this cookbook and we are proud to have him included as part of the project. Dr. Greger is a NYT Best Selling Author and founder of NutritionFacts.org which we consider to be the most trusted source for plant-based nutritional information on the internet.

Video Demonstrations in a Book?

YES! All 101 recipes in the cookbook include a scannable QR code linking to a step-by-step video! As far as we know, this has never been offered in a cookbook before, except by us in our first cookbook! ? You just point a smart phone or tablet camera at the QR code and a link will pop up and open directly to our website with the video.

Scan the QR code with any smart phone or tablet and watch the demonstration video.

 Project Timeline

We have launched this 30 day Kickstarter because we have the final manuscript fully edited, all the food pictures ready, and 101 step-by-step videos done. While this campaign runs we will be finalizing the cover design (with a vote from our community) and finishing the design of the interior layouts.

This means when the Kickstarter ends, if we reach our funding goal, we can roll straight into the pre-production pipeline with our self-publishing partner Mascot Books. Mascot estimates the cookbooks will be printed and ready to ship out to everyone approximately 6 months from the end of the Kickstarter. We know this sounds like a long time but it is actually less than half the time it normally takes with a traditional publisher!

Budget

It is surprising how many costs are associated with publishing a quality book. We have worked with Mascot extensively to estimate the total budget and determine the appropriate Kickstarter goal. There are always unforeseen expenses with a project of this scale but we have done the hard work to account for everything possible.

Budget break down details:

  •  Printing – Printing costs are far an away the largest chunk of the budget and cover the entire production run of the books. If we end up going over our Kickstarter funding goal and can print more books the printing costs start to come down. We hope to stretch and print 5000 books for the cost savings.
  •  Copyedit – Overall editing of the manuscript and formatting the book to follow industry standards for cookbooks.
  •  Indexing – We plan to have a detailed index including individual ingredients which is all created at the last stage of pre-production to match page numbers.
  •  Layout & Design – We are doing most of the design work ourselves so this fee is for taking the designs and putting the manuscript, photos, QR codes and other book content into the print ready format.
  •  Foil Stamping – Add on to the printing costs to have the spine stamped in silver foil.
  •  Transport – Cost to ship printed books to the warehouse for fulfillment.
  •  Fulfillment – Cost to process the orders from the fulfillment center.
  •  Kickstarter Fee – Cost to run the project on the Kickstarter platform.
  •  Credit Card Fee – Bank charges to process the credit card payments to fund the Kickstarter.
  •  Backerkit Fee – Service to assist with processing fulfillment of orders, verifying mailing addresses, and supporting backer inquiries at the end of the Kickstarter campaign.
  •  Bounced Pledges – Estimated lost pledges from credit card payment processing failures and declined cards.

Shipping

Shipping is one of the challenging aspects of delivering a physical product to a global audience, with prices fluctuating daily (partly due to the ongoing pandemic related issues). To make this as seamless and accurate as possible we are partnering with Backerkit and Mascot Books to handle fulfillment and shipping. Shipping is not included in the pledge tiers. Instead all backers will receive a survey email after the Kickstarter ends that will collect shipping and payment information and allow us to charge the appropriate shipping charges for each order.

We are so pleased to be able to offer worldwide shipping (which is no small feat) and to be extra clear on shipping:

  • The cookbooks will ship from the United States.
  •  Shipping is not included in the pledge tiers. It will be charged in Backerkit later on, and will be calculated by our fulfillment partner Mascot Books depending on your location and the weight of your rewards (including any add-ons you select).
  •  INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS: Please be aware that your country may have additional VAT, Import, or Customs fees. We have no control over these fees and they are not included in the reward tiers or shipping fees. Please consult with your country’s customs department for more information.

We estimate the shipping charges to fall in this range:

  • United States: $8 USD
  • Canada: $18 USD
  • Rest of the World: $20-$35 USD
  • *Please note that shipping is subject to change.

Why Self-Publish?

We learned a ton working through the publication of our first cookbook with a traditional publisher and ended up taking the reins on much more of the project than is typical for first time authors. We ended up writing the book, filming and photographing all the recipes, and designing the covers and the interior layouts.

We also faced some of the typical first time author limitations which meant we could only print in softcover binding and with a limited choice of paper stock and other possible print upgrades.

So as we began work on this second volume we realized, with all the practical experience of the first successful cookbook under our belts, we could now self-publish this second book and have complete creative control allowing us to upgrade many of the print features.

Collaborate with Us

We are collaborating with our audience and member community on some of the key design decisions for this cookbook to create a final book we can all be proud to own. We are sharing and documenting the process in our Self-Publishing series on our community platform and YouTube channel. Join us for the remaining votes and have your say!

A Bit More About Us

We are passionate creators. Now going on 26 years of marriage together, we have run the creative gamut from homeschooling and raising our two daughters, to recording an original music album, to starting successful businesses, to the past 7 years of creating The Whole Food Plant Based Cooking Show and publishing these cookbooks.

We put in the work. Every aspect of our cooking show from the recipe creation, to the filming, editing, writing, production, web development, Kickstarter setup & design, even day-to-day support (if you have ever asked a question or needed a hand using our community platform then you know that it was one of us that answered your email promptly). It is just the two of us!

We earned our Plant-Based Nutrition Certificate, Completed (February, 2022), from the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies and eCornell to solidify our knowledge of the latest research and best practices for living a plant based lifestyle and incorporate everything we have learned into the recipes on our show.

We are both artists at heart and feel compelled to find creative ways to use our talents to be of service to the world.

More on our story. Here’s an interview we did with Brian Krock from Krock’s in the Kitchen where we share some of our story.
