The Problem

The traditional leather belt is an age-old wardrobe staple. But, anyone who has ever worn one knows it is not without its flaws. The stiff and unforgiving material can dig into and pinch the skin. Plus, you’ll see cracks, ridges, wear and tear within days of use.

At Xpand, we’re all about moving smarter. We believe everyday items should work with you, not against you. That’s why we designed the Urban Belt.

The secret is in the materials. After years of testing elastic fabrics, we’ve found the perfect fit. The belt strap is made from a zero-memory elastic, meaning it won’t sag or lose its tension with wear. The tension and fit will last no matter what the day brings. Plus, you’ll hardly notice the lightweight fabric, so you can focus on what matters most.

Our buckle is made from a premium plastic called, PA66 GF30. To put it simply, it is an amazing material with some awesome abilities. It is a highly durable plastic which we have put to the test to ensure we are providing our backers with nothing but the very best. Our buckle also has UV protection and weather resistant properties. We do understand that plastic is a very valuable source and should not be abused but, we have chosen this material so that your buckle is built to last! Inside the buckle are 2 N64 grade magnets. To simplify, these magnets are highly durable and provide the perfect amount of pressure to secure the buckle and be released at the users choice.

Here at Xpand we have been in the elastics game for a while now so we can tell a good elastic when we see one. The manufacturer and process we are working with are amongst the best we have ever seen and know that the product will not leave any backer feeling disappointed. Our elastic is zero-memory, meaning it will not lose its tension or start to sag after continued and constant usage. The material’s stretch provides the perfect combination of security and comfort. This belt strap will blow your mind and leave you feeling like you’re wearing your comfiest sweatpants.

How it works

The standout feature of the Urban belt is its adjustment system. Using the buckle wings, the elastic belt can be held securely underneath and pulled outwardly to release and adjust in a snap.

To re-secure, simply pinch the strap and pull underneath the wings or wiggle the strap underneath one wing at a time.

The two part magnetic buckle can be separated by sliding the front in an upwards direction or pulling the two parts away from each other.

Hidden Mode

Oh and did we mention that there is also a hidden way to wear the belt to avoid seeing the tail of the belt? Threading the belt from the front to the back allows you to hide the excess on the inside offering a super clean look. Also included with the belt is our excess ring which is an optional piece for you to wear to secure the excess even tighter.

We designed the Urban belt to provide our customer with the ability to separate the buckle from the strap. With five available strap colours to choose from, you’ll find something to suit any outfit or style.

At Xpand we believe that everyone should have the option of creating their own style, so making a belt that the customer can customize was of the utmost importance. This is unlike existing elastic belt companies that force you to buy a whole new belt and buckle if you want a different colour.

How we did it

We started by researching and gathering all the information we could on existing products. We thought about all the ways these products fell short. Then we got to work on making them better. Our mission was simple. Create a quality elastic belt that is designed for everyone to use everyday.

We began exploring standard methods of attachment like male and female clips, or loop and hole style systems but kept running into the same problem. The belt would be difficult to adjust. The project seemed to be nearing an end when our designer made a break through.

**Original no-tie lace anchor belt prototype 1**

He put two Xpand Original No-Tie Lace Anchors back-to-back to make a double-sided version. He wrapped it around his waist and it worked as a belt. We made an upscaled 3D model and, just like that, we had a proof-of-concept. From there, Xpand’s Urban belt was born.

Xpand started when our founder redesigned the shoelace. His out-of-the-box thinking helped raise $1.2 million on Kickstarter and Indiegogo and Xpand was officially born.

Since then, Xpand has grown into a full team dedicated to continuing to execute our founder’s vision.

FAQ

How much is shipping? Do you ship worldwide?

The Urban will be available for Worldwide shipping. Each order comes with FREE worldwide shipping!

What do I do with the excess?

There is a sliding material ring loop that can be used to help secure the excess. Your pant belt loops are also helpful for this!

What if I’m exactly a size 30, 35 or 40?

We recommend going for the smaller size as the elastic will stretch. Going for the bigger size will leave you with more excess. For example if you are a 35, go for the medium 30-35 for a perfect fit.

Can I put the belt in the washing machine and dryer?

We suggest machine washing on a low temperature and leaving out to air dry to avoid shrinking the fabric.

What is the material of the belt buckle?

The buckle is made from a premium durable plastic called PA66 GF30, which is extremely durable, water-resistant and includes UV protection.

What is the material of the belt strap?

The belt strap is made from premium zero-memory elastic, meaning the fabric won’t sag or lose its tension with wear.

How big is the buckle?

The buckle measures 40mm (1 1/2 inches) in height and 70mm (2 3/4 inches) in length.

How wide is the strap?

The width of the belt strap is 30 mm (1.2 inches). The length of the strap varies depending on the size selected. See our sizing chart for more information on the length.

How do I select the color or the size of the belt straps?

At the end of the campaign, we will be sending out BackerKit surveys to your e-mail where you can choose your belt size, belt strap colors, and any additional accessories (buckles, belts, Xpand Laces) you want to add to your order.

What’s next?

At the end of the campaign, every backer will be sent out a survey to collect information on their backing choice. This will include information about your address and shipping options as well as the size and colour of the belt(s). Additional add-on sales will also be available if you would like to add to your order.

As for us here at Xpand, we will immediately get on with the finalization of quantities and start the manufacturing process. Through the email sign-up and Indiegogo campaign, we will be updating you on our progress and if there are any updates to the project you can find them there.
