Easily plan, navigate and track great cycle routes built on feedback from over 20k riders

Story

Velo 2 is your companion for better rides.

Bicycles are good for us and for the world. Whether we are riding to work, the shops or getting out exploring at the weekend, there is no doubt that getting out on two wheels keeps our bodies and minds in shape. And that cycling is a fantastic eco-friendly mode of transport.

But it can be really hard to quickly find a good, safe route and a simple way of following it.

Existing solutions can be distracting, expensive and fragile.

We changed that when we released our Velo in 2017. And now, with years of feedback from tens of thousands of riders, we are very excited to bring you our updated Velo 2.

It combines everything that riders have loved about the Velo with a totally revamped design and an all-new interface.

And will incorporate all of the following features:

What if you could follow routes that were selected by cyclists like you for cyclists like you? What if someone could tell you the quick ways, the quiet ways and the in-between ways? Where feels safe, and where feels scary?

Velo 2 is here to do just that.

Via its companion app (iOS and Android), Velo 2 offers its own Beeline Smart Routing* which blends all of the best available mapping and road use data with insights from cyclists who have ridden the road before. All you need to do is type your destination, and you’ll be offered up to three routes to get there.

5 3routes

A fast route will get you there as quickly as possible, a quiet route will prioritise roads that feel the safest, and a balanced route will blend the two. All of them will show you which parts of the route have been well rated by other riders, and which have been poorly rated; so you know when you can relax and enjoy the ride and prepare for any trickier sections.

It’s pretty simple, really. Anyone using Beeline can say at any point of their journey whether they’re having a positive or negative experience. We call them Beeline Road Ratings.

On the Velo 2, we make road rating even easier.

6 velo2rate

Just give your Velo 2 a press on the plus button if you like a road, and a press on the minus button if you don’t. We’ve put little markers on the device so that it’s nice and simple!

After you have given your feedback, it feeds directly into our routing algorithm to adapt and improve your future routes, and those of other cyclists in your area. Win-win.

Combining real user data with road data, our routing is much better optimised for a good safe bike ride. You can see how we compare to well-known routing providers below:

Sometimes we want to follow a very specific route, sometimes we want to throw caution to the wind and have a bit of an adventure! That’s why we have a routing option for every occasion.

Choose turn-by-turn with Beeline Smart Routing for when you want to follow a fantastic route from A to B.

Choose our original Compass Mode for as-the-crow-flies navigation; an arrow will point at your final destination and allow you to pick your own path to it.

Or, if you have found a super route elsewhere, import a GPX into the Beeline app to be guided along it by your Velo 2.

Once you have a well planned route, being able to follow it is the next challenge!

Sometimes just navigating a navigation device makes you want to toss it into the nearest hedge. And how are you supposed to read and ride at the same time anyway?!

We know that a big part of feeling safe in the saddle is being able to keep your attention on the road in front of you. That’s why we have developed and tested an exceptionally simple navigation interface; so that all the information you need is just a glance away.

Want to check that you’re on track to arrive where you need to be on time? You can tap across to check your speed, time and how much of the route you have covered so far.

Knowing where to turn next is just part of the experience. Velo 2 will also have a speedo, odometer, clock and ETA so that you can keep track of your progress as you ride.

  5 device modes

At Beeline, we don’t believe that it matters how far you went, or how fast you rode. But it’s still pretty cool to know, isn’t it? That’s why we allow you to keep a record of everywhere you have been and how far you’ve ridden.

We know that everybody’s different and that no two rides are the same…even for the same person!

That’s why we have made a product that will be as useful zipping around cities as it will be exploring the countryside. It also works worldwide* out of the box – no need to buy any additional maps!

Our bicycles are often our trusted companions for years, if not decades, and we believe that the Velo 2 should be no different.

That’s why we have designed, and manufactured, Velo 2 to withstand the elements with you. It will be shock and water-resistant – we’re targeting a high rating to ensure you can ride with confidence in the worst of weather conditions.

We get it. Having to keep track of what you need to charge is annoying! That’s why Velo 2’s battery offers up to 10 hours of daytime use, 20 hours of night-time use and up to six months on standby.

Velo 2 pairs with your smartphone to work. And drastically reduces the battery drain of navigation on your phone in the process! You can see how running Beeline navigation with Velo 2 compared against running navigation on Strava below:

Beeline Velo 2 is a smart device, connected to your phone and to the cloud. This means it can keep getting better through software updates and we’re committed to doing just that. Since we launched our first product back in 2017, we’ve released 10 major feature updates based on the feedback we’ve heard from our community. And we’re only just getting started!

Every Velo 2 device comes with a twist-lock mount (with bands to fit standard handlebars) and a USB-C charging cable.

Velo 2 will integrate the best of recent technology to bring new features and an all new design. Here’s a full tech spec and how it compares to our original Velo device:

And here’s how it compares against our competitors:

We have thousands of Beeliners who have joined the journey over the last few years. Here’s what some of them have to say about their Velos and our app:

“LOVE IT!

Excellent device! I’ve no idea how I could ever cycle without it.”

Gabriela Opacka, Trustpilot

“The perfect thing for following Strava routes. […] I have used it to follow several routes and LOVE it. Even complex intersections were easy to navigate correctly, following the little arrow and ‘tulips’.

This is going to make using new routes a piece of cake.”

Tom Bernhardt, Trustpilot

“Amazing company with a genuine knowledge of their customer’s needs.”

Big Craig, Trustpilot

“Superb device that shows everything you need to know, nothing more. Easy to use and to see. I found Maps and GPS devices difficult to see in some circumstances and littered with far too much distracting information. Beeline finds destinations speedily and keeps locked on. Compass mode is a real bonus to allow more exploratory rides. Plus, it is a really good price. Highly recommended.”

Nick Assinder, Trustpilot

“Not everything I order online turns out to be any good!

BUT the Beeline navigation is nothing short of MIRACULOUS!!

THANKS SO MUCH, from the package to the instructions, from the app to the gizmo, just bl**dy Brilliant. I really didn’t expect to be able to read in full sun, but you can.

And even better, they not only encourage feedback but they make it easy AND they respond.”

Robin, Trustpilot

“This has quite simply been brilliant. The interface is simple and uncluttered and really all you need. The app used to plot your route is very simple and intuitive, it also allows you to very accurately pinpoint your destination on the mapping. The device itself is very robust, waterproof, does the job well and looks ace to boot!”

Mike, Trustpilot

“The guys at Beeline did a fantastic job in the last years upgrading the firmware (and yes, my old Beeline is compatible) and the iOS app. I feel like it is a new device! The user experience is excellent.”

Thibaut, Trustpilot

“Love it!

I don’t often leave comments but I love Beeline so much I wanted to leave a review. I have had my Beeline since they first came out and I love it. A nav for people who don’t “do nav” – really easy to use, links to an intuitive app and a really well designed bit of kit for any cyclist.”

Em, Trustpilot

“As you know I’m still a big Beeline fan, couldn’t imagine my life without it, especially here in Tokyo where I’m always winding my way through the small side streets with no names, and always love going back on my rides to improve and find new routes.

Anyway, I totally can’t wait to discover the new hardware features of Velo 2!”

*Where we don’t yet have Beeline Smart Routing, Velo 2 will be able to offer turn-by-turn routing in any country covered by Google Maps bicycle routing.  It will be able to offer Compass Mode and tracking worldwide.

Beeline Smart Routing is currently supported in the following geographies:

UK, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg

And Beeline supports the following languages in its app and on its devices:

English, French, Spanish, Dutch, Italian, German, Japanese

We plan on rolling out to more countries as we go forward. Where and when we do that will be based on user numbers and demand. Please let us know if you would like to see your country/language on the list!

We have worked with renowned design studio Pentagram at every stage of Velo 2 development process.

Pentagram have previously worked with Rolls Royce, Apple, Harley Davidson, Slack and Waze on design projects.

This all started over six years ago when Beeline founders and good friends, Tom and Mark, decided they’d had enough of getting lost in London on their bikes. They launched Velo for cyclists and then, in response to huge demand, Moto for motorcyclists.

In the four years since the Velo was shipped to Beeline’s first customers, Beeliners have travelled over 17,000,000 km over 600,000 journeys. And, since March 2021, they have been rating the roads they ride along.

Now with a team of 20,995 (that’s sixteen employees and an awesome community of riders who feedback), we are focused on improving the ride experience by providing the best bicycle routing there is. Thank you for being part of it!

All shipping costs will be charged on BackerKit closer to the campaign. With continued uncertainty around the world, shipping prices continue to fluctuate, and we believe that charging you shipping when we have a clearer idea of how much it costs will reduce the cost to you.

As an estimate, we expect to charge:

Please note that we can’t cover taxes when it arrives in your country – you may be subject to these charges.

Risks and challenges.

We are extremely confident in our ability to deliver this product. We’ve done it twice before and already have all of the pieces of the puzzle in place for manufacture with established relationships with our manufacturing partners for tooling, production and assembly. With several working prototypes already, the product is already much further along the path to completion than is often seen at a crowd-funding stage which means less margin for error.

We also have the business experience of running this company for several years, advising other businesses in our previous lives and some very smart advisors keeping us on track. All of this means we’re on top of all the less glamorous but absolutely crucial financial management side of things.

That said, no crowd-funding project is without risk so it’s important to identify where any potential road bumps could lie and what we’re doing to mitigate them. These are what we see as major potential risks and we’re confident that at worst these would cause delays rather than an absolute failure to deliver.

1) Supply chain. A hazard for any hardware company is that the supply of certain components or materials dries up. This is a particular hazard in 2021, as the supply of components continues to be disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic. We are mitigating this risk by having already placed large orders for key components, to ensure that we have them when we need them. aren’t reliant on any single component supplier.

2) Tooling. The tooling process (building the moulds to produce injection moulded parts) takes a long time. We will, therefore, be starting our tooling process within the week to ensure that we stay well on track for our timelines.

3) Certification. The bluetooth antennae and batteries in connected products such as Beeline Velo 2 must be certified before they can be mass manufactured which can take time. The risk of delays here is minimal as the batteries and antenna design are similar to those used in the original Beeline bicycle product and we have already worked with a known testing lab in Shenzhen

Sustainability.

We are passionate about getting as many people onto bicycles as possible; it is better for physical health, mental health and the health of our planet, too. We are deeply aware of our environmental responsibilities as a business and are taking steps to reduce our carbon footprint. In the context of our Indiegogo campaign, these include:

Long-lasting design

We build our products to withstand the elements and whatever adventures you take them on. We want your Velo 2 to be your riding companion for many years to come and have made decisions to make it as robust as possible.

Reusability and recyclability

We have designed Velo 2 with reliability in mind and we expect that your device will work brilliantly for many years to come. In the rare event of a hardware failure, or in the event of needing a battery replacement, we have established a relationship with a refurbishment provider and will be working on refurbishment solutions for Velo 2.

Sustainable Distribution

We have factored train/sea shipping into our production timelines to reduce the emissions associated with transporting Velo 2s to our British and European warehouses.
