Jokes aside – the Deluxe D20 Staff of Critical Hits is a modular, collectable staff forged in a high-strength blend of glass-infused polypropylene. It is the first in a planned range of staves built with interchangeable parts and celebrating all corners of pop culture and nerd-dom.

After an eventful 6-year journey, Enstaved co-founders James (Technologist) and Ben (Industrial Designer) have joined forces with prolific fantasy creator Offbeat Outlaw to deliver this amazing collectable to tabletop enthusiasts across the globe!

So What is the Deluxe D20 Staff of Critical Hits?

Enstaved began with an idea: to channel the ancient and timeless concept of a staff into a modern, highly portable and customizable design.

Our first D20 Staff of Critical Hits was an instant hit at pop culture conventions and came in a variety of colours and sizes. After listening to customer feedback we increased the size of the D20 topper and gave it a slick ridge along the corners. We also swapped out the original multi-coloured staff sections in favour of a medieval style section invoking the shape and texture of a wooden shaft topped with a studded band.

We use the word “modular” a lot here at Enstaved. Our staves are made of a variety of interchangeable parts and everything connects with everything else. As one of our customers once put it: “it’s like a LEGO staff!”.

Arguably the most important part of the staff. The Topper is traditionally where a symbolic, magical or deadly item would be mounted. The Deluxe D20 Staff of Critical Hits is no exception, topped by a powerful, weaponized D20 in either Lawful or Chaotic livery.

While the topper gets most of the attention, the Section is truly the backbone of the staff. The sections of the Deluxe D20 Staff of Critical Hits are in a medieval style, inspired by wood and iron. And of course the number of sections can be changed to suit the height, preference and purpose of the wielder.

Understated but utterly critical, the Endcap supports the rest of the staff and takes the brunt of each step taken on the long and winding road.

At the end of a long journey, the Hanger ensures that the staff takes pride of place on its owner’s wall until the next time it is called upon.

Exciting News Staffwielders!

When your wonderful pledges pushed our campaign past our funding goal  in only 5 hours we were able to go ahead and ask our supplier to  produce some packaging mock-ups based on concept designs we’d put  together.

We’ve received back some very early images of the Good & Evil Box Set and they look so awesome that we just had to share them!

The Good & Evil Wooden Box Set will have the same layout as the images above, but inside a hinged wooden box with a clear acrylic lid. The D20 Staff Lawful Edition and Chaotic Edition will have a similar layout, just a bit smaller as they contain less parts.

When we first developed a 3D printed prototype staff for a presentation at a Python software development conference in 2016, we had no idea where we would end up.

James was swarmed by convention-goers who loved the staff, many of whom asked about the possibility of additional designs. This sparked the idea for Enstaved – a range of modular, collectable staves celebrating all corners of pop culture and nerd-dom!

Designer Ben got to work and soon he’d developed dozens of designs. James’ background in technology allowed Enstaved to use 3D printing to quickly bring these new designs to life. 

When we finally got to share the staves with pop culture convention-goers around Australia, we were blown away by the positive feedback we received. One design in particular always sent people into a frenzy – the Deluxe D20 Staff of Critical Hits!

We were so encouraged by the amazing response our staves had received that in 2018 we applied to Startup School, hosted by prestigious Silicon Valley tech accelerator YCombinator. And we were accepted!

We set about developing an online tool that allowed people to design their very own unique, modular staff by mixing and matching from a huge selection of components in various styles and designs.

Early trials of our staff designer were a massive hit – we often had to politely ask convention-goers to share the demonstration tablet with others!

But our excitement began to fade when we realised how soon we’d reach the fulfilment limits of our humble 3D print lab. And while experimentation, iteration and refinement had led to 3d printed parts of high quality, we dreamed of offering our supporters an even higher quality, premium staff.

Then 2020 happened.

Lockdowns put an end to conventions and we were forced to re-evaluate Enstaved from the ground up.

After much soul-searching we re-focused on our most popular design – the Deluxe D20 Staff of Critical Hits. Around the same time, James stumbled across an article about Sourci – an Australian startup with an exciting new approach to product sourcing and manufacturing.

We don’t claim to have invented the idea of a staff, but we’re pretty sure we’re one of the first to modularize it!
