Monthly magazine focused on climate change: its causes, solutions, and how to make a difference

Story

Short Summary

Our magazine Guide To Zero is the outcome of many years studying the climate change problem and witnessing the clear lack of focus by world leaders and corporations.  At the same time, there has been little guidance provided to average citizens around the world.  I have lived in the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States, and through an engineering career spanning 34 years, I have worked in many regions of the world including North America, Europe, and Asia.  My field of work has involved all modes of passenger rail transit, with additional work in energy management and renewable energy.  I have founded and managed three engineering/technology companies, giving me an intimate understanding of the climate crisis, what motivates people, the importance of clear communications and how to organize and guide project teams to implement solutions.

The history of adverse climate change is relatively short, with the most obvious signs coming in the last 20 years. We are seeing unprecedented warming around the world leading to extreme weather, drought, water shortages and massive wild fires.  Guide to Zero will provide focused articles about the changes we are seeing, and highlight how the industrial revolution and our on-going choices have created these conditions.  We will provide product reviews and data for our readers to make choices that reduce their individual impact on climate change and save money.  Technology available today could give us the freedom to enjoy life, while at the same time reduce emissions and reverse climate change.  The key is that we need to make these options available to everyone, so that we can make the best choices to bring about the change we need.  Due to inefficient legacy industries, poor government incentives and lack of motivation, the current green transition is far too slow.

We don’t have time to waste. It is our goal to facilitate the transition to a net-zero world, assisting average people to participate in this transition through the information we provide and our Guide To Zero Projects. These initiatives will connect our readers to groups and activities that are actively working to reduce carbon emissions. We will also get communities and corporations involved with the projects to help achieve progress now.

What We Need & What You Get

The funds raised by this campaign will jump-start the Guide To Zero online magazine, creating our web site and expanding our ability to bring great information to our readers.  We will create the printed magazines for those who want this option, and start building a network of subscribers and organizations motivated to tackle the climate crisis.  The combined interest and resources of our backers and the organizations/companies we engage will allow us to begin building Guide To Zero Projects.

Our subscribers will learn clear ways to reduce their climate impact, save money, and show others the benefits of low carbon living.  We will identify local activities that people can support, and ways to participate in community climate action. The Guide To Zero Projects will give individuals the ability to play a part in larger carbon-zero projects.  Many people understand the threats of the climate crisis, but feel like there is little they can do alone. Guide To Zero is going to change that, and bring the power of the people to tackle the urgent crisis of climate change.

The Impact

Until recently, there have been a small number of individuals, organizations and companies that have pushed green technologies in the areas of renewable energy, lighting, transportation, heating, and industrial processes. These efforts started decades ago, but have been limited in scope due to costs and opposition. Fortunately, green technologies such as solar power, wind power, electric vehicles, LED lighting, geothermal heating/cooling have all matured to the point where they are cost-competitive or cheaper than the old designs that produce carbon emissions.

The goal of Guide To Zero is to inform readers about the latest options available, how these choices will reduce climate change, and how they will save them money. We will also provide opportunities for people to join local groups or participate in large projects to make an even greater impact. The greater impact will be preserving the habitat for thousands of plants and animals around the world, and maintaining a quality of life for future generations.

Our world is a beautiful tapestry of nature that has endured for thousands of years. It would be a great tragedy if we ignore the climate crisis and destroy our home in the next 100 years. Everyone can help make a difference.

Risks & Challenges

The short-term challenge for Guide To Zero is raising enough funds to allow us to establish the web site and online magazine.  This involves the organization of databases, sources and writing to produce our early editions.

Long-term, our efforts will focus on expanding readership, developing wider sources of information, and engaging organizations and companies to promote the magazine and the goals of Guide To Zero.  The Guide To Zero Projects will also kick-off after we have established a solid foundation, which is targeted for mid-2022.

Other Ways You Can Help

The best way to help ensure our success is buying a subscription, and any of the items we have listed on the initial campaign site.  And the most important follow-up is to pass the word along by encouraging friends, family and colleagues to take a serious look and add their support.

Similar to our future projects, it will be the grass roots support of many individuals that will bring success to this quest, and accelerate the transition to a green, net-zero future.
