Since first launching the MoonShade on Kickstarter at the end of 2019, a packable, portable vehicle awning designed not only for vans but just about any other vehicle, we’ve had more than ten thousand people bring the MoonShade along for their journey. 

You kept asking us to make a bigger shade, so we did.

Meet the brand new 12’ by 9’ MoonShade XL.

The XL now gives you over 100 sqft of Shade when deployed. The XL features the same modularity and packability as the original MoonShade, but provides sun and weather protection to 70% more people, pets, camp furniture, outdoor office equipment, you name it! The Shade is designed to shed water and protect you from the sun wherever the road may take you.

The XL Shade can be easily set up with two people in under 5 minutes, and still packs down fast and small whenever it’s time to hit the road, with dimensions just slightly larger than a yoga mat and weighing just 12.6 lbs

To accommodate the extra large canopy, we’ve beefed up the MoonShade’s stitching, tension poles, support poles, stakes, and even added an expandable center wind vent. The Shade is made from the same burly 420D ripstop polyester with a reflective undercoating to disperse lantern light, and comes with a roomy carrying bag for storing the XL and accessories.

 Big Shade, Small Package

Generous size, 70% more coverage than the original 9’x7’ MoonShade. You can fit a regulation sized table tennis table with plenty of space to serve,  a party of camp chairs, a full tailgating setup, the sky is the limit!

Wind Vent

The XL features an expandable wind vent at the center to allow breeze to travel through. Used in conjunction with the included guylines and heavy duty stakes, the XL Shade stays secure and stable.

Beefy(er) Upright Poles and Tension Poles

We’ve made the support poles and tension poles bigger and stronger to handle the additional stress.

The XL features our new carbon steel ground nails that handle rocky soil like champs. Your guylines aren’t going anywhere with these holding you down!

Tall Connect System 

The XL comes with the same tall connect pull-cord solution to assist with reaching tall vehicle setups. Gone are the days of climbing tires, doors, or popping out a ladder to reach the top of the roof every time you need Shade.

Shade by Day, Light by Night

The bottom of the shade fabric is reflective-coated to block the sun during the day and evenly reflect the light from your LED lantern (not included) at night. A plastic clip is attached in the center to suspend a lantern for optimal reflection.

Packable + Lightweight 
 

What’s the point of an awning if you never use it because it’s too much of a hassle to set up, or too bulky to fit in the trunk? MoonShade XL weighs less than 13 pounds and packs down small into the included carrying bag with a shoulder strap.

Easy Setup

We designed MoonShade XL to be easily set up by two people in less than 5 minutes. If you anchor your MoonShade out of reach (like the roof of a tall van or bus), you don’t have to climb up or get out a ladder – the MoonShade can be anchored from the ground using a simple cord pull, allowing you to connect and disconnect your MoonShade with ease, without your feet ever leaving the ground.

Unlike permanently fixed awnings, the MoonShade can swap sides of your vehicle, mount off the back, the front, or set up between trees or off a porch or railing. The possibilities are truly endless! And, if you have a second vehicle or swap rigs at some point, no problem. We have lots of anchor options to accommodate those changes, simply swap the MoonShadeXL to wherever you need it.

The MoonShade XL easily connects to our Long MoonWall to add extra privacy and Shade protection to your setup. The sun doesn’t stand a chance when you pair the MoonWall with your MoonShade XL! Simply attach the MoonWall to the grommets on the MoonShade XL’s 9’ side, and relax.

All Kickstarter backers can choose from one of the following options to ship along with their MoonShade XL:

 fixed anchor is required to use the MoonShade XL safely.  Any of our Semi-Permanent or Permanent Anchors will work. The only MoonAnchors not compatible with the XL are the Magnet MoonAnchors or Suction Cup MoonAnchors.

Environmental commitments

Long-lasting design

We design MoonShade for a lifetime of use, and have parts available for replacement if they experience wear and tear. We offer a Lifetime Manufacturer’s Warranty to protect against defects. We built MoonShade to last a long time and we guarantee it against defects for the life of the product. Like anything else in the sun, it won’t last forever, but until the elements take their toll, we’ve got you covered. When MoonShade fabric finally succumbs to the elements, you can recycle your old fabric and purchase a replacement shade fabric at about half the cost of a new MoonShade. Details We guarantee your MoonShade against materials and construction defects for the life of the product. For our purposes, the life of the product means the life of the ripstop polyester canvas material that MoonShade fabric is made out of. This, like any fabric, will eventually succumb to the effects of the elements, especially UV rays. How long it lasts depends on how much sun it’s exposed to, but we built it out of heavy UV-coated polyester so it will last a long time. If anything breaks or falls apart before this fabric reaches the end of its serviceable life, we will repair or replace, at our option, the defective component(s), free of charge. Basically what this means is if the fabric is brittle and worn out, then it’s time to get a new one, but if anything else breaks before that happens, we will take care of it.

Sustainable materials

In our manufacturing process, we’ve opted not to use chemical waterproofing treatments or polyurethane/DWR coatings. This was done for two reasons: First, these coatings decrease the service life of the fabric, so MoonShade should enjoy a much longer life in the sun without the added coatings. And second, many of these coatings are very harmful to the environment.
